PURPLE TEAM GROUP PROJECT

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL:

• Our school is third through fifth grade. There are 80 students in each grade level. There are four classes in each grade with 20 students in each.

• The teachers in our group include one third grade teacher, two fourth grade teachers, and two fifth grade teachers.

GOAL:

• Students will learn the scientific method and apply it in real life situations. The scientific method has 6 steps. First the students need to know how to find and ask a question. Next the students need to know how to do background research, construct a hypothesis, and test the hypothesis by doing experiments and analyzing data. Lastly, the students need to know how to draw a conclusion from their work and then communicate their results.

WHY SCIENCE?

• Our focus is science because we, as teachers, need to help students develop a high level of science literacy.

• According to the NSTA Position Science Statement, “The elementary science program must provide opportunities for students to develop understandings and skills necessary to function productively as problem-solvers in a scientific and technological world.”

• Elementary school students learn science best when— they are involved in first-hand exploration and investigation and inquiry/process skills are nurtured, content is organized on the basis of broad conceptual themes common to all science discipline mathematics and communication skills are an integral part of science instruction.

CLASSROOM CORNER SCIENCE LAB

• We believe that each student should have equal access to science labs for experiments and to develop critical thinking skills.

• Science labs will include microscopes, laptops, an iPad, and a document camera that can connect to the teacher’s projector.

• All of these technological accessories will help students in each different step of the scientific method.

• This Dell Inspiration Laptop has many awesome factors like an HD Webcam, HDMI output, WIFI assessable, Bluetooth interface, and USB ports. It also offers plenty of storage with a 500GB hard drive.

MICROSCOPES

• Microscopes can be used for closer observation. The specific type we found will be very useful in the classroom because students can connect the laptop to the microscope and the image is imported to the screen where the students can visually see the information more.

• iPad’s are a great education tool for many reasons. iPads connect to the internet for fast research, they are touch screen compatible for extra motor skills practice, and there are millions of apps that can be used for Apple products in the App store.

• An iPad Air 2 is $399. We would need one for each corner science lab. That would be a total of 12 iPads for the school.

This is a fantastic new interactive textbook with text as well as engaging intuitive free-play simulations. It’s very effective in teaching all ages about plate tectonics, erosion, volcanoes, glaciers, the water cycle and more.The forces of nature are at your fingertips.
