Temple prasadham to bestandardised across State

The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) Depart-ment has advised temples to ensure uniformity in the size and quantity ofprasadham sold in their premises. They have also directed that quality begiven top priority. Some 250 major temples in the State sell various itemsincluding murukku, thattai, laddu and appam. The concept is to makethese items in the temple’s madapalli (kitchen) and symbolically offerthem to the gods as neivedhya and then sell them to devotees. “Earlier, theyused to be distributed free of cost. Nowadays, the free distributioncontinues, but temples are also selling prasadham as it brings revenue,”explained a retired HR and CE official.

The directive comes as the fasli year (accounting year of temples fromJuly 1-June 30) comes to an end and contracts for such eatables are givenor renewed. “We have given training to contractors who prepare and sellthese items and told them and temple authorities to ensure prices are notexorbitant,” M. Veera Shanmuga Moni, Commissioner HR and CE, said. The standardisation may lead to a nominal increase in cost. “That wouldperhaps be a rupee or two. As far as quality is concerned, respective templeadministrations are constantly on the watch and there have been instancesof tenders being cancelled half way and temples themselves taking upsales. At the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai and ArunachaleswararTemple in Tiruvannamalai, prasadham is made and sold by the templemanagements themselves,” he added. However, the prasadham is notcertified by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAIl) . K.Mukundan, a resident of West Mambalam, said that such standardisationis a must. “Even small SHGs get FSSAI certification for eatables made bythem. Why should temples be left out?” he asked.

Appeal to ease traffic controlmeasures on Usman Road

Sir, In the aftermath of the fire accident inChennai Silks in T. Nagar, the authorities havebarricaded Usman Road flyover, the service lanesof Usman Road and the streets close to theaccident site for safety reasons. This has led tounprecedented traffic on Rameswaram Road. Inthe absence of any monitoring of traffic by thepolice, the residents of the street and the adjoin-ing streets are being put to untold misery.

Though a Minister, after visiting the accidentsite, stated that the entire building will be razedwithin three days, even after 15 days, the demo-lition is yet to be completed. The unfortunatedeath of a worker at the site has further delayedthe demolition. At the present rate, it looks likeit will take a month to complete the demolition. It will not be wise to inconvenience the public tillsuch time.

Instead of barricading the entire area and pre-venting the traffic, the authorities must close thetraffic only in streets close to the accident site, andallow traffic with police monitoring. Traffic copsmust be posted to regulate the traffic onRameswaram Road. T. Nagar Residents’ Wel-fare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar

Appeal to stop opening of liquor shopin Kripasankari Street

Sir, It appears that permission has been givento open and operate a TASMAC liquor shop at thejunction of Kripasankari Street and ThambiahRoad. Being a residential locality housing 150+families with young children and women in siz-able number, the residents are against any suchattempt to disturb the peace and tranquility ofthe neighbourhood.

The street also has the famous SringeriSharadha Temple where religious activities areperformed regularly attracting a large numberof devotees from far and wide. The opening of aliquor shop will lead to social issues and alsocause security concerns as all kinds of riff raff arelikely to visit the shop.

As residents we appeal to the authorities con-cerned to immediately stop the plan to open aliquor shop in our area and also cancel thelicense. R. Narayanan, Convenor, Kripasankari Street Welfare Association,17, Kripasankari Street, West Mambalam

Appeal for pedestrian safetymeasures in Brindavan Street/

Thambiah Street junctionSir, The traffic has increased manifold in

Brindavan Street (West Mambalam).Pedestrians, especially school students and

the elderly, find it difficult to cross the road duringpeak hours. The two speed-breakers on the roadwere leveled when it was last re-laid.

I appeal to the officials concerned to install atraffic signal at Brindavan Street-Thambiah Roadjunction and speed breakers to slow down ve-hicles. I also appeal to the traffic police to drawzebra lines and erect a pedestrian crossing signalat the junction. These measures can preventmajor accidents and loss of valuable human liveson the traffic ridden road. V. Venkatakrishnan,43, Brindavan Street, West Mambalam,80154 22914

Appeal to extend 11G service toFlower Bazaar Police Station

Sir, Last Diwali MTC had temporarily termi-nated MTC route number 11G at TNPSCOffice stop instead of Flower Bazaar PoliceStation. 11G operates between KalaignarNagar West Bus Stand and Broadway viaPondy Bazaar. But when I took the 11G buslast week, I noted that the last stop is oppositeFort Station. When I explained the difficultyinvolved in going to Flower Bazaar stop, theconductor asked me to take up the matter withthe higher officials.

Considering the practical difficulties andhardship of commuters, I request the authori-ties concerned to extend the service upto FlowerBazaar Police Station. V. Venkatakrishnan,43, Brindhavan Street, West Mambalam,80154 22914
