Math Placement • . If a student is not currently in PreAP/GT Math he/she can not move into Pre AP Math. • A placement exam is offered by the district. If your child would like to take this placement test, please be sure to get a form from his/her math teacher later in the spring.

• AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program designed to prepare students performing in the

• “academic middle” who have a willingness to learn and work hard toward four-year college eligibility.

• In this course students are introduced to the magic behind the websites and computer programs that are used in everyday life.

• They will learn how to program drawings, animations, and games using Java Script & Processing JS and/or learn how to create web-pages with HTML & CSS.

Students will learn the basics of programming and how to draw shapes and then bring them to life using variables and values. Students will utilize functions and logic statements to teach their programs to make decisions. (This course will replace Keyboarding that is redundant to Touch Systems Data Entry)

Semester Class •Intro to S.T.E.M

• This course will introduce students to concepts of Science,

Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; relating and interrelating these areas to careers and industry.

• This class offers hands-on discovery-based modules across a variety of STEM fields. These discover opportunities promote critical thinking and collaboration among students. The class encourages students to be scientifically aware, engaged in exploration, and experience the world around them through the eyes of STEM.

• Discover opportunities may include robotics and automation, design, nano-technology, energy, medical technology, forensics, and information technology. Recommended lab fee of $10 for student projects.

Verification Sheets • Verification Sheets will be sent home in February/March.

• The verification sheet is not the same as a SCHEDULE!

The verification sheet is just VERIFYING what you are REQUESTING to have in your schedule. There may be a conflict with another class that you want or the class may be full. This means that one of the backup choices on your blue course card would be substituted for one of the electives listed on your Verification Sheet.

• Do I have to take Intro. to Spanish in 8th grade to take it at the high school?

• No, Intro. To Spanish it is an elective choice. However, it is required for 7th graders if you would like to take Spanish I in 8th grade.

• If I fail Intro. to Spanish, can I take Spanish I? • No, you must successfully complete Intro. to Spanish to take Spanish I

in middle school. Do I have to take health?

• Yes, it is required for all 7th graders

Frequently Asked Questions

• What about Off Campus P.E.? • There is an application that must be completed and approved. You can

pick up an application from the district’s Website. Applications must be filled out completely and turned in to Mrs. Payne by May. I will fax it to the district for approval.

• Students must be in 5 or more hours of training under a coach’s supervision at an approved Humble ISD commercial establishment during a regular Monday through Friday workout schedule. Students may not leave early or arrive late to participate.

• Do I have to make up PE if I missed some part of it?

• If you are an approved opt-out of PE student the answer is no. You are ok

• All others: • You must take a year of PE in 6th grade. • A semester of PE in 7th and 8th grade. • If you missed any, you must make it up before leaving middle

school. You will lose an elective.
