ur fiscal year has ended and the Law School community has much to celebrate. TheMOMENTUM campaign continues to generate enthusiasm and commitment in our community, especially among the School’s loyal alumni and friends. Thanks to the generosity of those who

are gratefully acknowledged in these pages, we are more than half-way to our campaign goal of $16million, having raised over $9 million to date. These much-needed funds will help keep our Schoolamong the leaders in legal education in the United States.

Student scholarships continue to be our greatest need. Thanks to your support forscholarships, we will continue to attract and support the studies of the brightest and mostdeserving students, some of whom you will meet in these pages. Scholarship awards often make a life-changing difference for our students, who are extremely grateful for the generosity that makes thispossible. I am especially pleased to note the creation of scholarships named in honor of ourSchool’s late law professors Robert H. Waters, Daniel E. Murray and Rafael Benitez. Theseenduring tributes reflect the continuity of our great Law School traditions, the faculty who

perpetuate them, and the students, colleagues, alumni and friends who cherish this heritage. We are grateful to those serving oncommittees to establish these scholarships in honor of our beloved faculty and to all those who have committed gifts in support. If youreducation was enhanced through the work of one of these professors, please consider remembering him with a gift to a scholarship fund.

I also wish to thank the Miami legal community for its strong support. Several law firms have created new student scholarshipsin the firm name during this fiscal year: As you read about the law firm scholarships in these pages, please keep in mind that weinvite all of you to join us in this endeavor. Law firm scholarships celebrate each firm’s professional commitment and provide alasting benefit to our students and our School. We are honored to be part of the Miami legal community and grateful to all thosewhose generosity helps us continue our shared tradition of excellence.

Campaign funds will also be used to enhance and support our innovative student programs: the Children & Youth Law Clinic, the Litigation Skills Program, Helping Others Through Pro Bono Efforts (H.O.P.E.), the Center for Ethics & Public Service, and theProfessional Opportunities Program. These programs, and the dedicated faculty and adjunct professors who direct and assist them, enrich the legal education of our students and inculcate our strong commitment to public service. As you read about the importantwork of these student programs, please keep in mind that they depend upon gifts and donations to continue their endeavors. Inthese pages, we gratefully acknowledge gifts received to support these programs.

Again this year, it is my pleasure to welcome new members of the Dean’s Circle, a group of alumni and friends who make anannual gift of $1,000 or more to the Law Annual Fund, to a scholarship fund, or to a programmatic activity of the Law School. Weset a goal to increase membership in the Dean’s Circle this year, and I’m delighted to report that your response has been overwhelminglypositive. Dean’s Circle support is vital to maintaining excellence in legal education at the Law School. Our thanks to each newDean’s Circle member, each continuing member, and to those who have helped recruit new members for this important group.

We congratulate the Class of 1954 celebrating its 50-Year Class Reunion. The photograph on the cover of this publicationembodies the strength of our School, the continuity of our traditions, and our shared commitment to excellence in legal education. We are proud of the recognition and accomplishments of all our Law School alumni and friends, our talented faculty, and our students.

I know you share our pride in our UM Law community. We thank each of you for the generosity and commitment that makesour School what it is today. We hope we can continue to count on your support. Please remember: every gift counts and every gifthelps.

I look forward to seeing you in the coming year.

n May, the Class of 1954 gathered to celebrate their 50th School of Law reunion. Althoughthey found today’s Law School a very different place from the school of their memories, theimportant things haven’t changed. In the words of Professor M. Minnette Massey, who spoke on

behalf of the law faculty, “The warmth, the love, the appreciation--that stays the same.”

Dean Dennis O. Lynch described the Class of 1954 as “the bedrock of the Law School.” As classmembers, family and friends reminisced over dinner in the Faculty Lounge on May 7, their storiesrecreated that special time in their lives and in the history of the School of Law.

Reunion Committee Chairman Larry Hoffman, acting as master of ceremonies for the evening, commented, “If you’re like me, the Law School had a profound effect…. it totally changed my life.”Classmate Sheldon J. Schlesinger described how the 1950’s at the School of Law was shaped by the

post-World War II era. Many law students were returning veterans who had the GI Bill to cover educational expenses, but themoney didn’t go far. Schlesinger recalled that benefits approximated $1,500 per year, but Law School tuition was $500 per year, leaving little for living expenses. He bought used law texts—and when none was available for his civil procedure class, ProfessorPaul Barnes, former Florida Supreme Court Justice, lent Schlesinger his own book. Remembering rigorous classes, stimulatingfaculty, and great friendships, he concluded, “It wasn’t a good Law School. It was a great Law School.”

How did the Class of 1954 get into the School of Law? “We just walked over to the School and signed up,” Schlesinger said. There were no entrance exams and no prerequisites. No undergraduate degree was required. And they had “the diplomaprivilege”—if they graduated by June of 1954, no bar exam was required to practice law.

U.S. Magistrate Barry Garber studied pre-med at Emory University for three years before being accepted at Yale Law School.“My friend said, ‘What do you want to go to Yale for? If you go to Miami, you don’t have to take a bar exam.’ I enrolled the next day.”

Morton Goudiss agreed that law school was better when “they just let you in and you had to prove yourself” without a barexam. He recalled that class grades were posted by serial number in the old Law School building (the Merrick Building). For privacy,“You’d go out at night with a flashlight to check your grades,” he recalled. Bill Ingraham even remembered his grade number: #3551.

Returning vet Gus Larson studied law for two years at the University of Pennsylvania before transferring to the University ofMiami School of Law. “I learned more law [at Miami] than in the first two years [at Penn],” he commented. “I’m proud to be agraduate of this Law School.”

Stanley Levine, former editor of the Barrister, said, “This is the first reunion I’ve ever been to. My heart is full of memories.”

Larry Hoffman concluded by thanking his reunion committee members: The Honorable Barry Garber, The Honorable AllenKornblum, The Honorable Murray Meyerson, Sheldon Schlesinger, and Murray Shear. During the planning for their 50threunion activities, the Committee considered what the Class of 1954 could do for the School of Law that has given them so much. After discussion, the Committee proposed a student scholarship in the name of the class. “I view this as a good pay-back time,”Hoffman commented. With student tuition now at $29,000 per year, the need for assistance to students is greater than ever. “Wewant to give opportunity to those who couldn’t afford it,” he continued.

Dean Dennis Lynch closed the evening with remarks about the crucial time whenthe Class of 1954 attended the Law School. “Although the School had its beginningsin the 1920’s, the period when you were in school, the teachers who taught you werecritical to shaping this Law School. The 1950’s were the formative years and you arethe bedrock of the School,” Lynch said. The School of Law has succeeded beyond thedreams of its founders. “We now have 5,000 applicants for 380 seats in the first-yearclass, so we have a very selective admission process. Our students are very talented. Our faculty is nationally recognized for their scholarship”, he continued. Lynch urgedclass members to think about the goals of the School of Law’s current capital campaignand consider ways to give back to the school. “The Class of 1954,” he concluded, “is anexceptional class.”

he Dean’s Circle has had an outstanding year for2003-2004. We were able to increase the size ofthe Dean’s Circle to 351 members, and we raised

significantly more money for the Law School than wehad done in the past. On behalf of the Committee, thank you for your generosity and for yourcontributions. However, we can do better.

The percentage of members of the Dean’s Circleand the percentage of donors to the School of Law issignificantly lower than the average donors to lawschools throughout the nation. The Dean’s Circle giveseach of us an opportunity to thank the University ofMiami School of Law for being part of this professionand to grow as human beings as well. Together, we cancontinue to raise the level of support for the Dean’sCircle, a vital source of funds for the School of Law. Itis a long-term goal to establish an endowment fund thatwill provide annual revenue on which the School ofLaw can depend.

This support helps the School maintain studentscholarships as well as many important programs, whichnot only assist in the growth of our Law School, butalso help it remain one of the finest law schools in thenation. As alumni, we should all believe in the

importance of our School of Law. Through ourfinancial contributions, we are giving back to ourcommunity. Our Law School educates quality lawyers, contributes to an active and qualified judiciary, and actsas a resource to the community in a variety of ways.

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS 2003-2004

e officially kicked off the Momentum Campaign lastfall, and, thanks to all of our alumni and friends, weare halfway to our goal!

Our judicial receptions in Dade, Broward and Palm Beachwere great successes in large part because of our graciousand generous sponsors, Mellon United National Bank andBacardi U.S.A., Inc. Mellon has once again agreed tosponsor and host our Dade Judicial Reception, so pleasemark your calendars for October 20, 2004. Last year over400 judges, alumni and friends joined us in honoring our–hardworking and distinguished judiciary.

Please stay posted for announcements of other alumni events including Happy Hoursand some new and exciting events we are planning for this coming year.

Lastly – but most importantly – WE NEED YOU! It is only through yourparticipation and support that we can continue to work toward our goal of makingthe Law School one of the top in the country. Every contribution to our AnnualFund helps to achieve this goal.

This will be an exciting year, starting with the first Presidential Debate to be heldat the University in September. I encourage you to make this the year you becomeinvolved in one of the many activities and events of the Law Alumni Association, and I urge you to make a gift – of any amount – to the Law Annual Fund, so thattogether we can make a difference in our Law School and our legal profession.

Thank you for your commitment and help, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Very truly yours,

Barbara Perez, JD ‘932003-04, Fundraising Vice PresidentLaw Alumni Association

The University of Miami School of Law Children & Youth Law Clinic continued its eight-year tradition as a Law School Clinic serving the legalneeds of poor children where students not only learn the law, they help make the law. The Florida Bar Foundation, along with other support, wasindispensable to the Clinic in helping us undertake significant advocacy and achieve results of statewide importance for our clients.

Students and faculty in the Clinic engaged in cutting edge advocacy, expanding the constitutional and statutory rights of Florida’s foster childrenin the state and federal courts. The Clinic trained present and future lawyers to provide high quality, compassionate and ethical legal services forimpoverished children. Clinic faculty offered educational opportunities to more law students than ever, supervising 30 legal interns in the Clinic andanother 50 students in three Law School courses: Children and the Law; Community Justice - Lawyering Skills and Ethics; and the Bar Foundation-funded Summer Public Interest Law Seminar in Children and the Law.

Since 1989, the Professional Opportunities Program (P.O.P.) has provided numerous

opportunities for black law students including funding for and placement of judicial interns,

summer associate positions with local law firms and mentor relationships with local judges

and attorneys. Through the cooperative efforts of the Dade County Bar Association Young

Lawyers Section, the University of Miami School of Law, St. Thomas University School of

Law and several Miami law firms, P.O.P. was developed to help black law students make a

successful transition from law school to positions with Florida employers. In 2004, twenty-

eight (28) students from UM and St. Thomas were placed through the program.

n behalf of the University of Miami Law Alumni Association (LAA), I want to thankeach of you for a successful year. The LAA accomplished our goals of bringing our studentsand alumni together to perform community service projects and network.

A great example of the alumni and students working together for the betterment ofthe community was the Habitat for Humanity Project that was put together by Darin Zenov, JD ’97, and Patrick Mullane, JD ’04. I thank you both for a job well done!

Our alma mater has several scholarship programs which benefit minority students and students who exhibit devotion to publicservice. We applaud these efforts.

The LAA’s networking continues to expand geometrically. In fall 2003, we held the Miami-Dade County Judicial Reception, and in spring 2004, we held the Broward and Palm Beach Judicial Receptions. Additionally, we held Happy Hour gatherings inBroward, Miami and South Beach. The attendance has been overwhelming. Thank you for your participation, and please come backnext year.

I want to thank Bacardi, U.S.A., Inc. Mellon United National Bank, and Gibraltar Bank for their generous support of theUniversity of Miami School of Law and its alumni association. I also want to thank the Miami Daily Business Review and SookieWilliams for their continued support and coverage of our events.

The Alumni Association has worked vigorously to build communications with alumni to create a support system for students. Our message to the students is “we are here for you.” The LAA is committed to assisting the School in providing a solid educationand ethical base for our law students to enable them to be positive members of the legal community. We need your continuingsupport to accomplish these goals.

This year has been the icing on the cake for me. The University of Miami School of Law has given me the opportunity to havea wonderful life. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your president.

Warmest personal regards,

Elizabeth S. Katzen, JD ’88LAA President, 2003-2004

s the incoming president of the University of Miami School of Law Alumni Association for 2004-2005, I would like to take this opportunity to thank those of you who contributed this past year to the AnnualFund and to challenge those of you who did not support our effort: Please consider joining our alumni as a

contributor for the coming year. The amount of your gift is not important. Our goal is to increase the number ofalumni participating.

Annual giving is one of the cornerstones of alumni support. Your support helps the Law School provide theresources needed to improve facilities, provide scholarships, fellowships and other program initiatives, andgenerally improve the overall quality of our alma mater. Many institutions require their alumni to pay an annualmembership fee to receive benefits such as using the Law Library, receiving alumni publications, CLE mailings, and invitations to alumni programs and events. At the University of Miami School of Law, our Alumni

Association provides these benefits at no charge to all graduates of our Law School. We want to continue to provide you with thesebenefits and to encourage all of you to become active participants in our Alumni Association and in the life of our Law School.

Although we encourage you to become members of the prestigious Dean’s Circle, we want you to participate at any level you can.Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference and is appreciated! Our goal is to increase alumni participation byencouraging every one of our approximately 16,500 alumni to become involved in the life of our Law School. To quote the president-electof our Alumni Association, Barbara Perez, JD ’93, "Give us your change…to make a change…in the lives of our law students."

I encourage you to visit the Law School campus to see first-hand the changes and improvements at the School. The Board ofDirectors and I plan to continue the legacy of those who came before us by continuing to build on our mentoring programs, H.O.P.E.projects, fundraising and placement committees, and our alumni networking projects. I hope you will join me by becoming an activemember of the University of Miami School of Law Alumni Association.

There are those who say that the only constant in life is change, yet the one constant at the University of Miami School of Law is the concern that our outstanding faculty and staff have for the students and alumni and their desire to meet the goal of achievingexcellence in legal education at our alma mater. I ask that you take the time to get involved in any of the many projects your Associationwill plan for the coming year. I know that our Law School community will continue to thrive and advance the ideals of higher educationand professionalism in law. I also know that with your support, the University of Miami School of Law will continue to rank among thebest in the nation.

Warmest regards,

f you would like your philanthropy to make animmediate impact at the University of Miami Schoolof Law while reducing the tax costs for your heirs inthe future, a charitable lead trust may be just the planyou’re looking for.

Many trust plans, such as charitable remainder trusts, are designed to pay income to you or your familybefore the remainder goes to a charitable organizationlike the University of Miami. But a plan that is oftenoverlooked, yet highly useful, is a charitable lead trustthat does just the opposite.

This trust pays out income to a qualifying charitableorganization like the University for a number of years, but when the trust term is up, the principal goes toyour heirs with reduced—or even eliminated—gift orestate taxes.

This is an outstanding way to transfer property tofamily members down the line (e.g., children andgrandchildren) at a minimal tax cost, especially ifyou’re well-to-do enough that you can forgoinvestment income on some assets.
