The proposed project will replace the existing bridge carrying westbound US 40 over BeaverCreek in Harmony Township, Clark County. US 40 is a rural major collector at the projectlocation, with an average daily traffic of 3200 vehicles.
The existing bridge is a single-span pre-stressed concrete box beam bridge on reinforcedconcrete abutments. The existing bridge has a clear span of 30’, face-to-face of abutments. Theroadway width is 40’, face-to-face of guardrail.
The structure has a sufficiency rating of 79.3 and a general appraisal rating of 5. Conditionsnoted at the time of the November 2011 bridge inspection included cracks on the superstructurebeams; and heavy deterioration with exposed steel, deep scale, and delaminations of theabutments and wingwalls. The bridge is expected to be rated poor (general appraisal of 4) at thetime of project sale (FY 2018).
The existing bridge is nearing the end of its serviceable life. Failure to address the condition ofthis structure will result in its continued deterioration, leading to the posting of load limits andthe eventual closure of the bridge. Renovation and replacement costs for the structure aresimilar. Due to the heavy deterioration of the substructure, renovation is not a viable alternative.Replacement has been determined to be the most prudent alternative.
The anticipated replacement will be a single-span prestressed concrete arch on stub walls. Thereplacement will also offer a clear span of 32’, face-to-face of abutments. The roadway widthwill be 40’, face-to-face of guardrail.
The project will be undertaken entirely within the existing public right-of-way. Under therevised design, westbound traffic will be detoured to Interstate 70 during construction.
The project is located in a rural area, with surrounding land consisting of mowed right-of-way/lawn and cultivated fields/pastures. There are no buildings in proximity to the project.OHPO Online Mapping does not indicate any records in the project area.
Beaver Creek is a warmwater habitat with a drainage area of 3.3 square miles at the projectlocation. No trees or wetlands were identified within the project limits. The sediment barswithin the channel will be removed in 2013, under a county maintenance project coordinated onthe July 2012 MOA.
The project will be constructed with federal and state System Preservation funds. Environmentalclearance is scheduled for 10-11-2013. The project is currently expected to award in October2017.
