    6th Sunday of Easter

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year AFeast of the Exultation of the Holy Cross

The Mystery of the Saving CrossJulieta G. Aquilo

The Gospel today focuses on the Crossas the symbol of Gods forgiving love. For God so loved the world that

He gave His only Son. . . that whosoeverbelieves in Him shall have eternal life.(John 3:16).

The Cross of Jesus, our Lord, has many

meanings. It signiies the inhumanity ofman as shown in the inhuman acts of menand in the dehumanizing situations theycreate as experienced by Jesus Himselfduring His passion and death in the handsof the unbelieving Jews. However, theCross also shows the humanity of God whoexperienced suffering and death for hislove for the world.

The Cross of Jesus also symbolizessufferings salviic value. In Christianspirituality, suffering is a reaction to painwhereby the believer, in this case thesufferer, offers God his sacriice of praise. This shows how the creature or sufferer

offers his pain to his Creator, while thevalue of suffering is that the believer whosuffers in his pain unites himself withChrist in His sufferings and in the process, becoming more like Christ.

God knows the world is markedindelibly, often brutally, by sin: but Godloves this world in which too often evildominates and prevails over good. And Hewants to save this world, thus, He sent Hisonly Son so that sinful men and womenmight ind light.

In their journey in the desert, theIsraelites who complained against God andMoses were bitten by poisonous snakesand died. But those who looked up tothe bronze serpent set up by Moses on astandard, lived. (cf Numbers 21)

So, also anyone in this evil world who

looks up to Jesus lifted up on the Cross andbelieves in Him, will have eternal life. Thus,we can truly say that the Cross of Christsymbolizes eternal life as God wills thateveryone shall be saved.

And for us, followers and believers ofJesus, the Cross should mean that we haveto accept that evil exists in this world, andwe have to show our love and concernfor this sinful world by making Christscompassionate, life-giving and universalLove present.

This Love of Christ will be concretelydemonstrated in 2015 when Pope Francis, the Vicar or Representative of Christ hereon earth, comes to the Philippines thisJanuary 15-19, 2015. This Apostolic visittells the world how Christ in the person ofHis Vicar manifests His compassionate, life-

giving and universal love for us, Filipinos, especially for those who suffered muchand are still suffering in the aftermath oftyphoon Yolanda. We need to realize thatthe coming of Pope Francis is not only forthe Roman Catholics, but for all believersand unbelievers of Jesus, alike. In this visit, the Pope challenges each and every oneof us to be merciful and compassionate, especially to our suffering brothers andsisters. We pray that this mercy andcompassion translates to an awarenessabout Jesuss loving care for them, andthus give meaning to their lives. We praythat this awareness of Christs care will

make them persevere and endure in theirsuffering, and thus hopefully move themto put their trust in God. In this way, theirsuffering becomes more life giving.

Again, when we look up to the Cross ofChrist, we are reminded of the inhumanityof man and the humanity of God, the valueand meaning of suffering and Gods willto save everyone. But God respects ourfreedom of choice: to look towards the Crossor go away from it, to embrace suffering orabhor it, to be life-giving or not.

ANG IKA-WALO NGA SUGO SANG DIOS

ANG MORALIDAD SANG PAGSUGID SANG KAMATUORAN

Sang nagligad nga isyu, akon ginpaathagang sala batuk sa Ika-walo nga Sugo kag ini

amo ang pagbutig ukon ang pagbaliskad

    ang paghinago sang kamatuoran, ukon

gbinutig amo ang pagsugid sang mga

g isigkatawo.

The JPYM held its Sports Fest 2014Opening Program last September6, 2014, Saturday. Twelve teams

participa ted: Brgy. Simon Ledesma, TaftNorth, San Vicente, Tabuc Suba-Ilaya,Benedicto, Tabuc Suba-Proper, Calubihanand Taytay Zone 2, Bakhaw, Democracia,San Roque and Cuartero. The Acolytes andHimig Katedral Choir also participated.

In the morning, we had a Symposiumon Drug Addiction. The speakers were Ms.Jo Agudo, Ma. Lucy Sinay, P/Supt. GilbertGorrero, Alfredo Villanueva, and PaulLedesma, PDEA Regional director. They arethe members of the Iloilo City Task Force ofAnti Drug Abused Education. They gave usvaluable information about drug addiction.

We learned that we must not just say noto drugs but we need to stay away fromit. Director Paul Ledesma explained to usthe legal consequences of drug addiction. An intermission number was given by theCampus Youth Ministry members. Themost interesting part was the Open Forum.Questions were raised by the participantslike: Sa isa ka barangay, may balay ngaginahimo nga drug den. Some questions were not

sang iban, tungod sa mga huring-huring

kag mga pabati-bati, nga nagabunga sang

    suspetsa, pangduhadoha, rash judgment,

kag ang pagbasulay nga wala man lang sing

sang matuod.

Indi gid man

    kon sugiran sang kamatuoran. Ikatlo,

    The conversation with the members

of the Parish Pastoral Secretariat lastSeptember 10 was grace-illed. I was

e to listen to their many experiences

    establishing and strengthening the

    gagmay nga Kristianong Katilingban in

different barangays within our parish.tening to them, I had a glimpse of theiruggles and dificulties. This gave me the

lization that these pastoral workers are

lly giving a lot of service to the parish.ey are making a lot of sacriices so that

MKK will thrive and move forward. I

lized that I must always include them

my prayers as a sign of my gratitude tom.

What struck me most during the

    nversation was their openness in

ealing their need for break or rest,

the pastoral work may be arduous ates. For me, its more than the needed

ak. Its more than the needed respite.

old them that perhaps, More than

break, what they are seeking is theaning of what they are doing.

As I continue to relect upon our

sharing, I realized that meaning is

important as it gives sense to our existenceand purpose. It revitalizes and empowers

us to do something because we know the

reason of what we are doing. Cstands for CHRIST. It is Christ we are

bringing to the people we serve. St.

Paul would say, "...For we do not preachourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and

ourselves as your slaves for the sake of

Jesus" (2Cor 4,5). As we continue to bring

Christ to our people, may we recognize that

we are encountering Christ in them too.

Hstands for HOPE. The situation in thebarangays may be dificult but let usremember that we are Gods workers in His

vineyard. As Gods co-laborers, let us giveour best efforts as a sign of our lively hope.

There must be no room for discouragement.

Rather, we rely on God with the hope that

    all shall be well.

Astands for ASSURANCE. God assuresus of His presence, of His constantaccompaniment. He is our strength, ourirm foundation. Hence, we should not be

afraid as God promises to be with us always. When we ind pastoral work burdensome,

Using the word CHARM as an acronym,

perhaps these insights can be helpful

for everyone, especially to our Churchs

leaders seeking for meaning in theirpastoral work.

God invites us to come to Him and He will

give us rest (cf. Mt. 11, 28).

Rstands for RESPECT. Respect to peopleand their pacing is very important. When we show respect to people we meet,

we establish an harmonious relationshipwith them which can be beneicial in

actualizing the programs we intend to do.And lastly,

Mstands for MISSION. In the words ofPope Francis, We are all missionarydisciples. We participate and share inChrists mission to build Gods Kingdom

among us. Christ must be at the heart of this

mission and not us. At the end of the day,

may we always anchor ourselves in Him inprayer to renew our sense of mission.

CHARM. Christ, Hope, Assurance,Respect and Mission. As we celebrate todaythe Feast of the Triumph of the Cross, may wefind lifes meaning and purpose in the light ofthe Cross of Christ.ato page 3

Msgr. Sin, our beloved parish priestEvery time I went upstairs, a saying

posted on the wall of the convencatches my attention. It says Smal

it meant. Then Msgr. Sin explained to me

the meaning. Small ideas discuss peopl

is equivalent to making tsismis whilebig ideas discuss events, cover a wider

scope with intelligent ideas. What i

of great importance in life. This sayingremained in my memory which taught

Gratitude ills my heart to be chosenas one of the delegates of thePhilippines for the 6thAsian Youth

Day in Daejeon, South Korea. The Asian Youth Day (AYD) is a

weeklong event organized by the YouthDesk of the Ofice of the Laity and Familyof the Federation of Asian BishopsConference (FABC). It brings togetherCatholic youths from all over Asia forfellowship and spiritual growth.

The recent AYD is actually the 6 thone. The 1stAYD was held in Hua Hin,Thailand in 1999; the 2nd one was inTaipei, Taiwan in 2001; the 3rd was inBangalore, India in 2003; the 4th wasin Hong Kong, China in 2006; and the5thwas in Imus, Philippines last 2009.Hosted by the Diocese of Daejeon, SouthKorea under the leadership of Most Rev.Lazzaro You Heungsik, the 6 thAYD wasindeed an experience very dificult to

forget, for it was in essence a moment ofcommunion with God for the individualperson, and with one another asbrothers and sisters in Asia.

Guided by the theme, Asian Youth!Wake Up! The Glory of the Martyrs Shineson You, we gathered to remember theroots of our faith, to re-discover the faiththat we may have lost, and to walk alongwith Jesus and the Martyrs as witnessesin todays world.

This years Asian Youth Day wasespecially blessed and signiicantbecause of the presence of the HolyFather, Pope Francis. It is actually theirst AYD to be graced by the personalpresence the Pope. Hence, the CatholicBishops Conference of Korea (CBCK)really put their best foot forward for thiscelebration. All Catholics, and perhapseven non-Catholics, put their acttogether in order to present to everyone

I couldnt help crying the irst timI saw the Pope in person. It is realldifferent when you see him in televisioFor me, that was a tremendous grace!was so thankful that I was there - seeinand listening to the Vicar of Chri despite the many limitations anchallenges which I experienced prior the AYD. Indeed, my participation in thAYD was really Gods will because HHimself made the way for me to be therI hope and pray that with this once-ia-lifetime experience, my ministry aspriest will be a relection of what PopFrancis assures the young the Churchlove, support and accompaniment!

As to the Koreans, they really felt thlove of the Holy Father. Their country the irst country to be visited by the HoFather in Asia. Many are praying that hapostolic visit will pave the way for threconciliation of North and South Kore

enkindle the faith, hope and charitof the young who may be inluenceby materialism, consumerism anhedonism; and bring back to thembrace of our Catholic Church thowho are astray from the sheep-fold Catholicism.

Finally, I would like to thank HGrace, Most Rev. Angel N. Lagdameo, D.Dand Rev. Fr. Rafael Luis Clavel, Director oJaro Archdiocesan Commission on Youfor recommending to the EpiscopCommission on Youth (ECY) me and mcompanion, Ms. Elaine Grace Capalla, youth minister from Our lady of PillParish, MH. Del Pilar Jaro, Iloilo City.

May the 6thAsian Youth Day inspius to lovingly and continuously journewith our young people. Believing in thegoodness and capacity, let us empoweour youth to become joyful proclaimeof the Gospel.

the best of their country.I believe that the Koreans best was not just

in their capacity to systematically organize abig event nor in their wonderful performancesduring the festival which amazed many ofus, but their best was shown through theirgenerosity especially of the young peoplewho volunteered from the Days in the Diocese(August 10-12) and AYD Proper (13-17) andtreated us with magnanimity even when theywere already tired and exhausted. Therewas never a time that they have spoken rudeor harsh words. Instead, they were alwayssmiling and ready to listen, accommodate, andrespond to the needs of a particular personat a particular moment. Organizing a bigevent like that and making it very orderly andmeaningful is a tough work, but the Koreansjust did it. Everything was great because oftheir love, prayer, cooperation and unity.

Thus, by the time we went back to ourrespective arch/dioceses, all of us have a common

feeling: we miss one anothers company! (I reallymiss my group mates!) The AYD has just givenus many opportunities to get to know otheryoung people from other Asian countries and getacquainted their situation, on how they live theirfaith even amidst trials and persecutions. Indeed,we had wonderful moments in establishingand strengthening our relationships with oneanother with Jesus in our midst in the spirit ofcommunion and solidarity. As early as now, weeven look forward to the next AYD in the year2017 in Indonesia.

My sharing with you of my AYD experiencewouldnt be substantially complete withouttelling you of the effects of the presence of theHoly Father, Pope Francis, to me and to others, especially to the Koreans. His presence wasindeed a great blessing for it signiies thewhole Churchs love and support for the youngwhom, the Holy Father in his homily during theculminating Mass, considers are not just thefuture of the Church but her present.

    Live! Love! Learn!

This is the time to join hands andmove together as one, towards anew dawn- building a community of

love and brotherhood giving no time forvices, crimes abuses and selish ambitionto destroy our future.

This is the time for prayers and honestlabor the time to come down fromour high perch and take the hand of oneanother a real Christianity in action.

It is very beautiful and touching toknow that the owners of the Sacred HeartSchool at the Felix Gorriceta Avenue atBalabag, Pavia, are not only interestedin the education of our children, but arephilanthropists, who had a school chapelbuilt, and a hospital for women andchildren.

I can say that they are devout Catholicswho inject God in everything they do.Humble and friendly, they welcomedhundreds of people last Monday, whoattended the Mass for the Blessed Virginsbirthday, the celebration of the fourthanniversary of the schools foundation, and the Ground-Breaking ceremony of thehospital.

That get-together was a real picture

of community building, cooperation andexemplary relationship.

The Mass was oficiated by Msgr.Sosonte Catalua of the seminary, assistedby six priests. The choir was composed ofsenior seminarians. Nuns from the MensaDomine of Pavia, led by Sr. Ma. EdralynT. Tocol, were also there. Students fromdifferent schools, wearing school uniformswere also present. Offerings of differentkinds were done by adults and children.Hundreds received Holy Communion.

After the religious group, thegovernment sector led by Mayor MikeGorriceta some councilors barangaykagawads and other personnel, composedthe political group.

Some commercial groups also gracedthe occasion traders from the city andsome neighboring towns.

The Principal, Mrs. Mendoza, and theteachers became voluntary usherettes whomade everybody comfortable and friendly.

I was touched when I saw everybodyenjoying and rubbing elbows with oneanother comfortably. We need occasionslike this; where educational institutions, government personnel, commercialgroups, social sectors and religious groups

join hands in making our community beautiful and prosperous place especiain relationships.

When Mrs. Mendoza gave time to metold her that if we could give value formatiseminars to the students they could becomadept at leadership and become assets community building. We planned to mesometime this week to discuss the seminthe process, the lectures and relationship

This formation seminar which I gave the pupils of the Pototan Pilot ElementaSchool when I was teaching there, gabeautiful results and Mr. Vicente Luntaour District Supervisor, had a grotto bubeside the stage because he was impressby our pupils, who prayed the Rosary eveafternoon after classes. Student leadershand cooperation especially during extrcurricular activities, was obvious anstrong.

October is the month of the HoRosary. May this devotion spread to communities. With the Blessed Virgin Maas our intercessor, we will soon experiena positive change in our lives a grace thwe will feel as we go on with our earthmission.

Weeks ago, I found myself looking atthe picture of the old parochial house witha heavy heart. It is different now! Everytime I am at the cathedral to participatein a Mass or even when just passing by,it is the picture of the newly constructedbuilding I imagine. I am so glad andexcited to think I will be seeing, it soon.I also believe many are with me alwayshoping and praying donations will come

pouring in to hasten and make possiblethe completion of our project. Are you stillthere benevolent hearts?

I believe building a new parochialhouse is the next necessary project afterthe Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral. If youhave given your loving support to thechurch years ago, why not continue yourmuch needed generosity for the parochiahouse?

We are all aware how big a projectthe parochial house construction is, butwith our continued support and prayers, Ibelieve it can be realized soon. The projectis greatly dependent on your generosity.Let us do our best to make this one moredream of the Parish come true.
