Frederick Area welcomes new teachersNew family and consumer sciences teacher comes from Highmore

Brigette Nemec is excited about starting her first year of teaching at Frederick High School.

Miss Nemec is originally from Highmore, S.D. After high school she attended South Dakota State University, where she earned her degree in family consumer science education and a minor in art.

Fresh out of college and completing her student teaching, she will be in Frederick teaching art and FACS classes. These include Human Development (Prenatal to Toddlers), Dietetics and Nutrition, Nutrition and Wellness, Skills for Parenting, Personal Finance and Employability.

She is looking forward to meeting her new students and having her own classroom to plan fun activities. She appreciates that Frederick is small for more one-on-one time with students. —Codi Roebuck, FASD Journalism

Sixth-grade teacher previously taught in Leola

Jennifer Dallmann is Frederick Area’s new sixth-grade teacher, which is quite a change from her last teaching job.

She was the kindergarten teacher in Leola for the last two years.

Originally from St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Dallmann has moved around quite a bit in her life. She received her teaching degree from Mount Marty College in Watertown, S.D.

She is looking forward to having an exciting year of school.

She likes that the class sizes are smaller so there is more one-on-one time between the teacher and students. She also likes the community. —Codi Roebuck, FASD Journalism

Teacher moves from Virginia to Frederick’s fifth-grade classroom

Heather Lovrien is the new fifth-grade teacher at Frederick Elementary.

Mrs. Lovrien is originally from the southern part of Virginia. She graduated from Christopher Newport University. She was a third-grade teacher in southern Virginia before she came to Frederick.

What she is excited about is getting to know the students and the staff much better. So far she has enjoyed how friendly the people of Frederick are. —Skylar Cox, FASD Journalism

Two current employees of Frederick Area School District moved to new positions this year after the departure of former superintendent Bev Myer.

Justin Downes takes on the role of CEO of the district. He starts as superintendent in his sixth year in the district after teaching for three years in the math and physical education departments and serving as principal for the past two.

One of Mr. Downes’ main goals this year is to garner some positive public relations through the Frederick F.Y.I. and to get Frederick known for the things we accomplish, not only athletics, but in the classroom as well.

Mr. Downes is enjoying the challenge and the leadership positions that come with his new title, but he does miss some things about teaching, such as interacting with the students in the classroom daily and building positive relationships with them.

“They used to come to me, now I have to go to them,” Mr. Downes said.

Jessica Ringgenberg moves from the fifth-grade classroom to the principal’s office this year. She is beginning her ninth year in the district after spending the previous eight in the classroom.

Mrs. Ringgenberg has three main goals for this upcoming year: maintaining a positive and welcoming school environment; develop ing and enhancing the teaching staff through communication, observation, technology, in-services, and other professional development opportunities; and monitoring and assisting in achieving adequate student growth.

With her new position she also takes over the Student Council and she is looking forward to building relationships with the high school and anti-bullying development.

Mrs. Ringgenberg’s aspirations for becoming a principal can be found from former Frederick Area Principal Ann Hegge, and Mrs. Ringgenberg says “thanks” to her for her mentorship over the years.

The thing Mrs. Ringgenberg will miss most in the classroom is the kids and interacting with them on a daily basis.

Ms. Myer has not gone too far from Frederick—she now serves as Leola’s principal.

for every firefighter and the insurance for trucks.”

The department is required to carry that insurance, which comes to $5,500 per year.

This means there is very little left over for maintenance or routine replacement of equipment. Compared to surrounding districts, some of Frederick’s equipment is quite dated. Some firefighter gear is from the 1980s and not up to current recommendations. The main truck the firefighters use is a 1981 model, according to attorney Kari Bartling, who is representing the department.

Bartling was quoted in an Aberdeen American News article following the department’s presentation to the Brown County Commission, which had to give its approval before the vote could go forward.

Currently, about $7,200 of the department’s budget comes from the city of Frederick and surrounding townships, with the rest of the funding provided by the state.

If the taxing district is approved, a board of directors would be created immediately following the vote. That board would determine the exact amount sought by the district. Barton said the department is aiming for taxing authority of about $100,00 per year, which would be about $43 per $100,000 of property value.

The department averages 12 to 20 calls per year.

board member for the organization. Both of the apartments are two-bedroom,

one-bath homes with 988 square feet of living space, and each with an oversized one-stall garage.

They are handicapped accessible with everything on one floor and 3-foot doorways.

An eat-in kitchen includes refrigerator/freezer, microwave, stove/oven and a dishwasher, and the laundry room has plenty of room for a freezer and storage. A washer and dryer are also included.

A central electric heating and air conditioning system will keep residents warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

A cement patio on the east side of each home extends the living area outside with space for grilling, sitting by a fire pit or visiting.

While snow removal and mowing are included with the $650 rent, utilities, water and garbage are the renter’s responsibility.

Rental subsidies may be available through the Aberdeen Housing Authority based on income. One apartment is already rented and the new occupant will move in very soon, and the other apartment should be done in just a few weeks.

The Development Corporation hopes to have an open house sometime in September. If the apartments are rented quickly and there still seems to be demand for more, Peterson indicated there’s room for up to four more units.

FIRE: District would seek $100,000 in taxing authority

HOUSING: More units are possible

Fun week ends with a victoryBy Logan Weisser

FASD Journalism

Homecoming week started with the school voting for Homecoming King and Queen on Monday, with the results announced at Coronation that night.

The candidates consisted of Logan Weisser, Kyle Kenser and Jayden Mikkonen for King and Paige Podoll, Briana Nordine, and Meghan Conn for Queen. Logan Weisser and Paige Podoll

were voted Homecoming King and Queen.

The week also featured some games—a relay consisting of

Oreo races, some “unique” shoe games, and

a relay where players had to

perform a

random job before racing back to their class. Following the relay was Family Feud games between the seniors and juniors, sophomores and freshmen, and the eighth- and seventh-graders. For Thursdays games, a kickball tournament was planned contingent on the weather cooperating. For a substitute for Thursday’s games STUCO decided a movie inside each class was best.

The theme for Friday’s parade was “Movies.” Each class in the school as well as many members of the community came up with unique ways to cheer for a Titan victory in a movie-themed way.

The Titans didn’t disappoint, as they defeated the Ipswich/Edmunds Central Tigers 35-14.

The week was capped off with an impressive fireworks display near the football field.

Logan Weisser carries the ball during the second quarter of the Titans’ homecoming game.

Some elementary-school boys got an up-close view of the fireworks.

Main Street was full for the Homecoming parade.

Team prepares for 2014 season with weightlifting, winning attitude

By Jimmy King and Kyle KenserFASD Journalism

The volleyball Titans are coming off an

8-21 season that included a 1-1 showing in the district tournament with a victory over Langford before falling to eventual state champion Warner in the semifinals.

The girls have been hard at work over the summer taking part in Aberdeen Central’s Summer League. Quite a few of the players also did a weightlifting program this summer.

Coach Holly Mueller expects each player to come to each practice with a great attitude and lots of energy. “If we bring these two things to both practice and games, I believe we will have a successful season,” she said.

Paige Podoll, Denae Melland, MacKenzie Heilman, Chandler Ellwein, and Brittany Aman are some of the returning key players. All of them either started or got significant playing time in varsity games.

Mueller said the Titans aim to finish third or better in the district and to win 10 or more games this season.

After last year’s powerhouse, young team aims to learn fastBy Kyle Kenser and Jimmy King

FASD Journalism Football practice started for the Titans

on Aug. 14, but that’s not the first thing the Titans have done to prepare for the season this summer.

For three days in June, the team attended a football camp at Valley City State University.

“It’s a great time,” Logan Weisser said. “We get lots of bonding time, and you get to play football all day.”

The team also had a camp with former NFL player Jake Nordin in late June.

The Titans are coming off an 11-1 cam-paign that included a Lake Region Confer-ence Championship and an appearance in the championship game in the Dakota Dome.

Even after graduating 15 seniors, “we still have a small group of individuals who have experience and played quality time,” coach Marty Morlock said.

With only four seniors and three juniors, the team is quite young and will have to learn fast.

Coach Morlock said his goals for the year remain the same: “Win each play, each quarter, each half, and each game.”
