COURSE SYLLABUS

CJUS 500 CRIMINAL JUSTICE INTEGRATION COURSE DESCRIPTION This course focuses on the interdependency of organizations and agencies in the criminal justice system. Specifically, the course will examine the competing roles of law enforcement, courts, prosecution, defense counsel, etc., in the pursuit of justice. RATIONALE The specialization in Criminal Justice Administration will prepare students who have been immersed in a Christian worldview throughout their MBA or Human Services program, to work in the Criminal Justice Administration field and perform strategic planning, and make informed Criminal Justice Administration decisions. This aligns with the mission of Liberty University: “To develop Christ-centered men and women with the values, knowledge, and skills essential to impact tomorrow’s world.”

This course, CJUS 500, Criminal Justice Integration, is intended to introduce the student to the foundational concepts, terminology, and personnel that comprise the federal and state criminal justice system, thereby equipping the student for further study in the field.

IV. MEASURABLE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

A. Explain the terminology associated with the criminal judicial process and utilize those terms in analyzing cases.

B. Describe the significant steps in the criminal justice process from an academic and real-world perspective.

C. Compare the elements that distinguish between the federal and state criminal justice systems, including court structures.

D. Identify the institutional representatives that comprise the criminal justice system and assess their roles in a courtroom setting.

E. Analyze current and future challenges to the administration of justice and assess the viability of proposed solutions.

V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS

After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.

C. Discussion Board Forums (3) There will be 3 Discussion Board Forums throughout the course. The student is required to post 1 thread of at least 400 in response to the provided prompt. The student must also post 1 reply with at least 200 words. For each thread, the student must support assertions with at least 3 citations. For each reply, the student must support his/her assertions with at least 2 citations. Acceptable sources include the course textbook, the Bible, legal sources, assigned reading, and presentations. The Discussion Board Forums must be done in current APA format.

D. Trial Project 1. Part 1

The student will identify a specific courthouse and case to observe for the Reflection Paper. There is no minimum length for this assignment but it requires collecting and reporting data (the address of the courthouse, specific case references, etc.). This assignment requires a title page and must be completed in current APA format. No references are needed for this assignment.

2. Part 2

The student will select a specific courthouse and case to observe. After observation of the case the student will submit a 3–5-page paper summarizing the observations. The summary requires a title page and abstract in addition to the 3–5-page requirement. No references or bibliography are needed. The summary is to be written in current APA format.

E. Article Review

The student will read and summarize 2 articles from the 5 articles presented in the Judicial module. The student must clearly identify the issue, review the author’s discussion, and provide his/her own analysis. The review must be 3–5 pages. The assignment must include a title page and an abstract in addition to the 3–5-page requirement. The assignment does not require citations; however, they are strongly encouraged. The review must be done in current APA format.

F. Book Review

A book review is a to-the-point summary/evaluation of the book involved. The length of the book review will be no less than 5 pages and no more than 7 pages, typed and double-spaced. This is a formal paper and must be written in third person.

G. Exams (3) There are 3 exams for this course. Each exam will have 25 questions. The questions will be multiple-choice and true/false. The questions will be drawn from the reading material for the course as well as the presentations from each module. Each exam must be completed within 1 hour
