The multi unit makes it possible to create two independently switched circuits within one

connection unit. You can use it where a group of lights requires switching by two switches or where a large area may later be split into smaller spaces needing independent switching.

The combination of outlets to be switched is totally flexible. It can be selected at the time of installation – by moving a simple jumper on the reverse of the outlet board – and easily altered if the building layout changes. Two switch return terminals are supplied in each multi-connection unit.

The Value connection unit is the heart of the Flex 7v system and provides plug-in connection

for multiple luminaires on a single switch circuit. Available with up to 20 outlets, it can be conduit box mounted (up to 12 way), ceiling mounted, mounted directly to trunking, tray or basket or suspended from drop rods.

The circuit can be hard wired to a switch or have a switch drop, ELV switch unit, PIR or other control device plugged-in. Using the plug-in switch option lets you upgrade to energy-saving sensor control at a future date, without having to re-wire the installation.

Designed to complement the Flex 7v range of connection units, the 3 and 4 pole single socket

outlets are ideal for applications requiring standard or emergency lighting connection.

The 16 amp rating enables the socket to cope safely with the inrush current when lights are first switched on, making it particularly suitable for high bay lighting and similar fittings.

Large capacity terminals and substantial wiring space, combined with a simple-to-remove cover, make the socket quick and convenient to install, particularly where space is at a premium. Removing the cover gives access for inspection without disturbing the wiring.

Whilst the socket has 50.8mm fixing centres for conduit box mounting, the Flex 7v trunking mount plate provides a simple way to mount single outlets to trunking, cable basket or tray. Supplied in the same colour as the socket with a 20mm hole as standard, you can also order it blank or with a 25mm hole.

flex 7v plugs

Available in black, white or red, 3 and 4 pin Flex 7v plugs are robust and

simple to use. With all the terminals in-line, a snap-on/snap-off cover and pair of screws which both secure the cover and clamp the flexible cable make it quick and easy to wire.

The strong mechanical latches on each plug double as finger grips, making de-latching for plug removal almost automatic when (and only when) you need it. All terminals are numbered, with additional marking illustrating normal usage.

Grey plugs are also available but we recommend that, for easy identification, these are restricted to control devices on installations with plug-in control.

Typical connections

Using flex 7

Whilst the Flex 7v range of value products

provides simple plug-in connection and control of lighting and emergency lighting, the 7 pole range – Flex 7 – enables you to connect and control more complex or sophisticated installations.

These include installations which use: 0 – 10 volt dimmable ballasts; DSI dimmable ballasts; DALI ballasts and control systems; remote testing and monitoring systems for

emergency lighting; luminaires controlled by rack and other master dimming systems; and scene setting systems.

All Flex 7 products share a common interface with the Flex 7v range, which makes the entire system fully compatible. We can also customise the 7 pole system for special installation requirements, such as essential/non-essential supplies or multiple switch circuits (up to ten in a 20 way unit).

For standard installations, please see the Flex 7v Value range on pages 3–6 of this brochure.

The 7 pole connection unit is ideal for more complex lighting installations. Available with

up to 20 outlets, it can be conduit box mounted (up to 12 way), ceiling mounted, mounted directly to trunking, tray or basket or suspended from drop rods.

With seven contacts available at each outlet point, you decide which contacts you need to connect and control your lighting scheme.

For example, use contacts 3, 4 and earth for simple on/off control and contact 2 for emergency lighting applications. If required switches, emergency test facilities, dimming and control can be hard wired into the terminal block using terminals 1, 4, 5 and 6.

Switches, fluorescent dimming and PIR or daylight linking controllers can be plugged in to any outlet

point, controlling all the other outlets in that unit. For customised control schemes such as multiple circuits or non-lighting usage, we can adapt the connection unit to your needs.

For details on Value range connection and multi-connection units, see page 4.

The Flex 7v range is ideal for any installation where simple on/off lighting control is

required. Switching can be hard wired or can be plugged-in to any Flex 7v socket. The range is fully compatible with our fns1000 range of plug-in ELV switches and occupancy sensors (see separate Value lighting controls brochure and Control-Plus data sheets).

The flexibility of Flex 7v connection units allows you to plug-in luminaires (with or without maintained emergency packs) or non-maintained emergency fittings. ‘Switch & dim’ fittings, with suitable ballasts, can also be connected and controlled using a Flex 7v unit.

You can use single outlets in the same way to connect single luminaires, or where the required lighting configuration makes connection units unsuitable – such as solid ceilings with conduit, long corridors or feeds to wall lights.

Flex 7v is fully compatible with the majority of basic lighting installations with one or two switching circuits in a room or area.

For 0–10v, DSI or DALI control systems, or where more than two switching circuits are required within one connection unit, our 7-pole range (see below and pages 7–9 of this brochure) provides an equally flexible and innovative solution.

You can connect almost any lighting circuit using the Flex 7 system – from the simple dimming

of fluorescent fittings to daylight-linked dimming and PIR control, using the fns3000 range of plug-in ELV dimmer switches and dimming and daylight linking occupancy sensors (0–10V, DSI and DALI control); and from the control of luminaires with multiple light levels (where luminaires are controlled by two or more switch circuits and/or incorporate a nightlight) to the separate switching of mixed on/off and daylight dimming rows of fittings in a room.

The additional pins 5 and 6 of the Flex 7 range are generally used for 0–10v, DSI and DALI control, either local to the connection unit or from a central controller. They can also be used for control and monitoring systems for emergency lighting.

Flex 7 connection units allow you to plug-in luminaires (with or without maintained emergency packs) or non-maintained emergency fittings.

Dimmable fittings, with suitable ballasts, can also be connected and controlled.

The innovative design of this range makes it possible for us to supply special, modified connection units, for example to allow the separate switching of up to four rows of luminaires, such as three rows with PIR control and the fourth with daylight-linked dimming and PIR control.

We can also produce units with both essential and non-essential supplies (on a single phase) or internal changeover relays for use with centrally maintained emergency lighting systems. If you have any special applications, let us know and we will work with you to find an effective solution.

Single outlets can be used in the same way to connect single luminaires, or where the required lighting configuration makes connection units inappropriate.

Specification

Typical specification for a flex 7 lighting connection system

The Contractor shall include for the supply and installation of a lighting connection system as

shown on the drawings.

Specific details of the system shall be as indicated on the drawings.

The equipment shall comprise the following: connection units; plugs and socket outlets for conduit box and trunking mounting; pre-wired luminaire leads; occupancy sensors; ELV switches.

The equipment shall be factory prepared and tested and be supplied with full labelling and instructions.

l Connection units shall comprise even numbers of 5-pole or 7-pole socket outlets, suitable for accepting mechanically latched plugs with two finger-operated release grips, rated at 16A and shall comply with BS 5773, contained within an extruded anodised aluminium body and with plastic end caps. Connection units shall be capable of accepting plugs of between 3-pin and 7-pin configuration. The option shall exist to interconnect certain connection units with plug and socket ‘extender’ leads and to connect them to a multi-circuit ‘hub’ unit, if so noted on the drawing.

l Plugs and socket outlets shall be 3-pole, 4-pole or 7-pole, plugs shall be mechanically latched with two finger-operated release grips, sockets shall be suitable for accepting all such plugs and all shall be rated at 16A and comply with BS 5773. They shall be suitable for conduit box mounting. A suitable adaptor plate for trunking mounting shall be available if required.

l Pre-wired luminaire leads shall be wired with 0.75mm2, 1.00mm2 or 1.5mm2 ls0h cables complying with BS 7211, as appropriate and fitted with a mechanically latched plug with two finger-operated release grips, rated at 16A and complying with BS 5773. They may also incorporate one or two mechanically latched sockets, also with two finger-operated release grips. Luminaires may include compatible panel mounted plugs.

l Occupancy sensors shall be of the passive infrared type and consist of two parts; a mains rated switching unit and an ELV (12V) sensing head. As noted on the drawing, they shall either be of a type capable of simple on/off switching, of daylight dependent switching or of daylight linking: capable of maintaining a lighting level by dimming suitable fluorescent fittings of either the 0–10V, DSI or DALI dimming type. If required it shall be possible to network the sensors for additional area coverage or circuit interoperability. If noted on the drawing, manual switching or overriding of the sensors shall be accommodated.

The sensors shall have a rectangular area of coverage of approximately 7.4m x 5.6m and it shall be possible to combine sensor heads to increase this area to 250m2. All shall have a switch rating of 6A and incorporate a mechanically latched, grey coloured plug module with two finger-operated release grips, rated at 16A and complying with BS 5733. This plug shall be compatible with all outlets on connection units, single outlet sockets and extender sockets. It shall be possible to set timeout periods of between 2 and 40 minutes, light levels and other switching options with a hand held remote control. There will also be a user remote control available.

l ELV switch units shall be capable of 1-way, 2-way or intermediate switching, utilising either retractive or non-retractive switch types and shall have a nominal voltage of 12V, derived from an isolating transformer, at the switch plate. All shall have a switch rating of 6A and incorporate a mechanically latched, grey coloured plug module with two finger-operated release grips, rated at 16A and complying with BS 5733. This plug shall be compatible with all outlets on connection units, single outlet sockets and extender sockets.

The system shall be as supplied by Flex Connectors Limited.
