Isover Installation Guide Masonry Separating Walls (Isover RD Party Wall Roll)

June 2010

CI/Sfb (22.89) Km1 (P2)

Ref: IGEWM1703

Isover has developed a glass mineral wool roll designed for use in Robust Detail wall constructions to meet Part E Building Regulations (England and Wales). Significant cost savings can be obtained since there is no need for pre-completion testing and additional savings can be made with E-WM-17 as it removes the need of wet plaster or parge coats.

Masonry Separating Walls

Features • Approved for use in Robust Detail E-WM-6, E-WM 10, E-WM-13 and E-WM-17

• 455mm wide glass mineral wool rolls

• High quality glass mineral wool

• Robust flexible material properties

Benefits• Exceeds Part E Building Regulations (England & Wales) requirements in a nominal 75mm and 100mm cavity

• Significant cost savings can be obtained since there is no requirement for pre-completion testing

• With E-WM-17, additional cost savings can be obtained since there is no requirement for a sand/cement render and the construction can be drylined with gypsum boards directly to the inner face of the blockwork

• Provides the opportunity to gain up to 4 credits towards The Code for Sustainable Homes with category Hea 2

• Compatible with conventional wall tie spacing ensuring ease of installation

• Since the product is in roll form, ease of installation and acoustic performance is improved due to no/minimal vertical butt joints

• Easy to handle, cut and install

• Minimal on-site waste

• Resilient to damage in storage, during transportation and on site during installation

Following an extensive site testing programme, Isover RD Party Wall Roll has been approved in the following Robust Details by the RD Assessment and Approval Committee.

E-WM-17Robust Detail E-WM-17 is based on 2 leaves of lightweight aggregate blocks with a nominal cavity width of 75mm (70mm Isover RD Party Wall Roll) or a nominal cavity width of 100m (95mm Isover RD Party Wall Roll) leaf to leaf, with a gypsum-based board ‘dot-and-dab’ finish (a sand/cement render is not required). RD Party Wall Roll is an integral component of this construction.

E-WM-6, E-WM-10 & E-WM-13Robust Detail E-WM-17 is based on 2 leaves of lightweight aggregate blocks with a nominal cavity width of 75mm (70mm Isover RD Party Wall Roll) or a nominal cavity width of 100m (95mm Isover RD Party Wall Roll) leaf to leaf, with a gypsum-based board ‘dot-and-dab’ finish (a sand/cement render is not required). RD Party Wall Roll is an optional component of these constructions and is included to anticipate future regulatory requirements

1) A section of the leading leaf is built to a height of 3 block courses, with the first row of wall ties at approximately 900mm horizontal spacing, positioned where the insulation is to begin. It is recommended that the insulation should start as close to the base of the cavity as possible to minimise noise transfer across the cavity.

A second row of wall ties at 900mm horizontal centres is positioned in the mortar joint between the second and third block courses.

2) This leaf should be constructed at this 3 block height along the full length from the front to the rear of the separating wall.

3) Isover RD Party Wall Roll insulation is removed from its packaging ensuring that it remains in roll form, but exposing approximately 750mm of length. This is then positioned between the base of the first block course (at the bottom of the wall) and next row above, with

the top edge of the insulation in contact with the wall tie, and with the back of the insulation in full contact with the block faces. The insulation should then be carefully unrolled along the full wall length.

4) It is essential that both ends of the acoustic insulation roll are positioned so they can be fully butt-jointed with the full fill thermal insulation (or Isover cavity barrier) that will be installed in the external walls.

5) Where the full length of the acoustic roll is installed and it is shorter than the full length of the party separating wall, a second piece of insulation should continue the run, ensuring that the joining ends form a close butted joint. Where the insulation needs to be cut, use a sharp, clean knife.

6) The trailing leaf is built up to the same level as the top of the acoustic insulation, that is, 2 courses.

Installation Procedure

• Fully fill all blockwork with mortar

• Ensure that all vertical and horizontal joints in the insulation are tightly butted and cuts are made with a clean knife

• Make sure that there is no connection between the two leaves, except for wall ties, foundation, and Isover RD Party Wall Roll insulation – Remove all mortar droppings from the top edge of each run of insulation

7) This process is repeated, building up successive sections of wall incorporating wall ties, at 900mm horizontal and 450mm vertical centres, as work proceeds to the required height, with the next layer of acoustic insulation roll installed every 2-block height.

8) After each section of wall leaf is built, excess mortar should be removed from the cavity face and mortar droppings cleaned from the exposed top edge of the installed insulation before installation of the next roll.

Use of a cavity board will help to protect insulation edges and make cleaning easier.

9) Isover acoustic insulation should always be installed in the party wall at a minimum of 300mm above the ceiling level into the roof space to maximise noise reduction from property to property. For room-in-roof situations, Isover RD Party Wall Roll should be installed in the full height of the wall to ridge level.

10) All exposed areas of insulation should be protected with waterproof material

at the end of the days work, or if work is suspended, or during rain (Ref: NHBC Standards Manual Chapter 6.1 – S10-d).

11) Generally, wall ties should be at the usual spacing of 450mm vertically and not more than 900mm horizontally (or in accordance with NHBC guidelines).

IMPORTANT: It is essential that all mortar droppings are removed from the top edge of each run of insulation. Bridging of the cavity can significantly reduce the acoustic performance of the wall.

Helpful Notes:

• Ensure that only solid blocks are used as stipulated in the Robust Detail manual.

• Keep any chases for services to a minimum and fill well with mortar. Stagger chases on each side of the wall to avoid them being back to back.

• Store individual packs of Isover RD Party Wall Roll in a dry place. If outside, keep off the ground.

• Cover and protect the wall construction at the end of a days work and during spells of rain.

• For further information refer to the required Robust Details information and checklist.
