ANNUAL REPORTOF THE

Historical and Philosophical Societyof Ohio for 1919

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT

DECEMBER 1st, 1919.

To the President and Members of the Society:

The interests of the Society, like those of many other similarinstitutions, have been unfavorably affected by the influence ofthe late war and the conditions following. The effect is shown inour library, but not to the extent we might have anticipated, and the coming year gives promise of increased prosperity.

A collection of photographs, several thousand in number, ofsoldiers in service during the late war, has been given to us forpreservation by the fathers, mothers and other relatives. It isa precious gift, and in years to come will form a valuable his-torical record of this locality's participation in the great conflict,as well as a memorial to those brave boys and men who answeredto the call of their country and fought and suffered for humanity. These photographs were exhibited at the Victory War Exposi-tion held in this city December 14th to the 22nd of last year. Some of those exhibited at that time have not come to us yet,but we hope to secure them all eventually.

The Society has come into possession during the year of twomanuscript volumes relating to early Cincinnati, of especialinterest, as they are official records of early dates, as shown by thefollowing descriptions:

One, bearing an outside title of "Tax Book for 1818," andthese words on the first inside page, "Claim for services rendered"agreeable to Appointment by the Hon. Town Council of the"Town of Cincinnati- For taking list of Property together"with the Number of inhabitants; and preparing Return; One

Eighty-four pages of this book are covered by this report, in which thenames of about 3200 property owners are given, with the valua-tion of their houses, lots, occasional live stock, together with acensus of each family. At the close of this list is "We the under-signed have to the best of our knowledge and belief valued the"foregoing property as described, without favor or partiality."[Signed! H. Bechtle, Francis Carr, Edward Dodson, Christopher"Smith, John Rice. The Corporation to the appraisers, Dr. for"valueing Town property, 100$." The names of these ap-praisers appear in the first Directory of Cincinnati, 1819.

The other manuscript volume bears the title of "A Returnfor Columbia Township, Pr. Daniel Reeder, Assesr, August,1796." This Tax list furnishes the householders' names, valua-tion of property and amount of tax, also a list of single menwith property and those not owners of property. This returnshows that 227 were men with families and 55 single men. Thistownship is now a part of Cincinnati.

Other manuscripts added to our collection are:— Twovolumes of Records of a Young Men's Bible Society of Cin-cinnati, the first entry is made in 1829. Presented by Mr. JosephWilby, who has given also, a number of old conveyances ofland and other similar papers.

December 5, 1918, Samuel Abbott Green, of Boston, Mass.,a corresponding member. '

March 20, 1919, Albert H. Chatfield, a life member.April 29, 1919, Mrs. John A. Gano, a corporate member.May 10, 1919, George W. Harris, a corporate member.June 7, 1919, E. G. Hayes, of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, a

with our annual reports.E. G. Hayes had been a corresponding member since 1871.Samuel Abbott Green became a corresponding member of

our Society in 1870. He was born in Groton, Massachusetts,March 16, 1830; was graduated at Harvard in the class of 1851;received the degree of M. D. in 1854. He was overseer of Har-vard College for many years; Librarian and Vice-President ofthe Massachusetts Historical Society; he made many addressesand wrote many books on historical subjects; Mayor of Bostonin 1882. We highly valued the association of his eminent namewith our membership.

Albert Hayden Chatfield was born in Cincinnati, November3, 1859; entered the private school of Mr. E. F. Bliss in the fallof 1871; after spending some time abroad he began work inthe business of his father—Chatfield & Woods—and was madea member of that firm in 1883; on April 9, 1889, he was marriedto Helen Fletcher Huntington, by whom and three sons he issurvived. Mr. Chatfield joined the Society December 2, 1878,as a life member. He was Treasurer for fifteen years, Curatorfor sixteen and corresponding Secretary for five; and during his

membership of over forty years he served the Society well; heheld firm to the ideals of the Historical Society, its purposes andfunctions as they came to him from association with RobertClarke, Rufus King, Manning Force, Julius Dexter, Eugene Bliss,Elizabeth Appleton and others of that generation of its friendswho re-established, strengthened and enriched our Society.Mr. Chatfield also gave freely of his time in service of musicand art in Cincinnati; it may safely be claimed, however, thatthe Historical Society held his interest longer and more closely. His death is very intimately our loss.

We purchased during the past year Thirty-five HundredDollars of United States Bonds; One Thousand Fourth LibertyLoan Bonds, One Thousand Third Liberty Loan Bonds andFifteen Hundred of Victory Bonds. This makes total investmentin the First, Second, Third and Fourth Liberty Loans and theVictory Loan of Seven Thousand Dollars.

Putting our money into these bonds was not only, I think, wise as investment but also in good fashion served patrioticpurpose.

The Society carries $7500.00 insurance on its books, bookshelves and other property in Van Wormer Library Building asfollows:—

Policy No. 1796322 American Insurance Company for $1000,expires May 5, 1924.

Photographs of soldiers in the recent war from this vicinityhave, largely through work of Mr. C. T. Greve, come into ourpossession as appears by the Librarian's report; it cost theSociety $140.00 in postage, thereby saving expense to familiessending these pictures to us.

The following year hewas assistant prosecuting attorney of Hamilton County. Sub-sequently he engaged in the practice of the law with his fatheruntil in 1893 he was elected a judge of the Court of CommonPleas of Hamilton County, serving two terms in that position.Upon the expiration of his second term he returned to privatepractice once more to assume judicial duties upon his appoint-ment in March, 1910, by his class-mate, President Taft, to theposition of District Judge of the United States for the SouthernDistrict of Ohio, which position he held until his death, Sep-tember 24, 1919.

He married June 2nd, 1887, Alice Keys, a daughter ofSamuel Barr Keys and Julia (Baker) Keys, a descendant of twoof the pioneer families of the city, who, with three sons and adaughter, survive him.

devotion to duty and unswerving loyalty to country was inbornwith him and was developed through a life of scholarly industry, laborious service, and lofty ideals to such an extent that he seemedthe embodiment of the highest type of citizen at the time whensuch citizenship was of the greatest value to his country, sorepressed by enemies abroad and doubters within. A properpride of ancestry and its obligations, and enthusiastic love of hiscountry and its history, and a lifetime of experience as a just, dignified and able judge combined to make him a guiding lightand a bulwark of strength in the trying times of the Nation'slife, and he passed at the moment of his greatest usefulnessinto a memory of triumphant patriotism and resplendentnobility of character.
