High status is attached to the EngTech, IEng and CEng qualifi cations – they are a measure of skill and professionalism in the engineering community as well as showing dedication to personal development.

The EngTech, IEng and CEng Standards are set by the Engineering Council and are common to all disciplines of engineering. They are published in a document called ‘UK-SPEC’ which is available to download from the Engineering Council website – www.engc.org.uk

Why apply through CIHT?If you are working in the fi eld of highways and transportation, CIHT is the leading voice for your profession.

CIHT looks at a candidate’s skills and experience from the highways and transportation perspective and ensures that the high calibre of professionals in the industry is maintained.

CIHT Assessors and Reviewers are experienced academics and practitioners who can relate to you as a professional and are in touch with your area of expertise.

Standard RouteThis route is for candidates who hold accredited qualifi cations. The acceptability of qualifi cations depends on the relevance of the subject and the year you started the course (diff erent regulations apply to diff erent periods).

Details of accredited courses can be found on the Engineering Council’s Accredited Courses Database at www.engc.org.uk. If you hold accredited qualifi cations, you can proceed directly to professional review once you have suffi cient practical experience.

Individual RouteIf you do not have accredited qualifi cations that demonstrate the required knowledge and understanding for the qualifi cation you are seeking to achieve, you will need to demonstrate that knowledge and understanding in a diff erent way.

If your fi rst qualifi cation is not in an engineering subject there is likely to be a shortfall in knowledge of basic engineering principles that you will need to address. If you hold a non-numeric qualifi cation, in addition, you will need to demonstrate the achievement of numeracy to the required level.

The evidence that you provide must be suitably rigorous and measurable by CIHT Assessors.

This can be achieved through conventional qualifi cations or examinations, through work-based assessment techniques based on verifi able and certifi ed achievements, or through submission of a Further Learning or Technical Report.

When educational equivalence has been demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Institution, you will then be invited to submit a Portfolio of Evidence and sit the Professional Review in the same way as candidates applying via the Standard Route.

Routes to Professional Registration through CIHT

Initial AssessmentAll candidates are required to submit a career history and education and training record to CIHT for initial assessment to confirm which route you need to take. If further learning is required, you will be given support and advice on ‘topping up’ your qualifications.

Professional ReviewThis is a peer assessment of competency and commitment. You will be required to submit a Portfolio of Evidence and attend an interview. If you are successful, your name will be submitted to the Engineering Council for inclusion on the appropriate section of the Register. Upon successful completion, you will be registered as a qualified engineer

Q. Do I need to be a member to apply for EngTech, IEng or CEng through CIHT?

Candidates applying for IEng or CEng through CIHT must be full members of CIHT (MCIHT). EngTech candidates may be Associate Members (AMCIHT). Membership details can be found on the CIHT website (www.ciht.org.uk/membership).

Q. How long will it take me to become a registered Chartered or Incorporated Engineer once I have submitted my application?

The process from submission deadline generally takes 3-4 months for those following the Standard Route. The time it takes to complete by the Individual Route varies from candidate to candidate but is unlikely to take less than 6 months.

Q. How do I check if my course is accredited?

See the Engineering Council website, www.engc.org.uk, and their Accredited Course Database for a list of all accredited courses specifically identified by date and for either IEng or CEng.

Q. If I think my course is accredited, do I still have to apply for initial assessment?

Yes. You will need confirmation from CIHT of the route you need to take before you can proceed to professional review. Initial assessment is free of charge.

Q. How do I know what to include in my portfolio of evidence?

Look on the Education Section of the CIHT website (www.ciht.org.uk/education) for information to help you prepare your submission documents.

Q. How do I know whether I should be applying for EngTech, IEng or CEng?

This will depend on several factors, including the breadth and depth of your practical experience and your academic qualifications. Your mentor or sponsor should advise you on this. CIHT’s guidance notes for candidates will also help you to decide which qualification is most suitable for you at this stage of your career.

Q. Do my sponsors need to be members of CIHT?

We would prefer your sponsors to be members of CIHT but, if you are unable to find a CIHT sponsor, we will accept a sponsor who is a member of another related professional engineering institution. Your sponsor will need to have obtained the qualification that you are applying for (ie. if you are applying for CEng, your sponsor will need to be a Chartered Engineer) in a related engineering discipline.

Q. How long does the Professional Review interview last?

For CEng/IEng the interview lasts around 75 minutes and starts with a 15 minute presentation on a project by you. For EngTech the interview is around 45 minutes and does not include a formal presentation.

Q. What do I need to bring to the Professional Review interview?

It is essential that you bring your original qualification certificates with you to the interview for verification. If you have difficulties with this, please contact [email protected]. You will also need to bring an item of identification, such as a passport or driving licence which must include your photograph. It is also advisable to bring along a copy of your portfolio of evidence to refer to.

Q. Does CIHT conduct Professional Reviews outside London?

As well as London, Professional Reviews are normally conducted in Edinburgh and may be held in other locations according to demand.

Q. What constitutes CPD?

There are many things that can be classed as CPD. These include: attendance at courses, conferences and seminars, training and mentoring colleagues, reading professional journals, writing technical papers or articles, personal research on technical issues and making in-house or external presentations – any activity that helps you to keep your professional skills and knowledge up-to-date.

Q. When I apply for a qualification, who should I make my cheque payable to?

Cheques should be made payable to CIHT.

Q. Where should I post my submission to?

Submissions should be posted to: Education Department, CIHT, 119 Britannia Walk, London, N1 7JE. You are advised to send your submission by recorded or special delivery.

Q. Where can I get a Word version of the professional review submission forms?

If you email [email protected], a copy of the forms that you need will be sent back to you as an email attachment.

Q. Can you help me with finding a mentor?

If you are unable to find a mentor, contact [email protected] and we will assist you.

Q. When is the next submission deadline and interview dates for Professional Review?

Submission deadlines and interview dates can be found on the CIHT website (www.ciht.org.uk/education).

Q. Is there a submission deadline for Further Learning Reports?

Further Learning Reports can be submitted at any time during the year.

Q. Is there a submission deadline for Technical Reports?

Technical Report synopses can be submitted at any time during the year. Submission deadlines for the full report and interview dates can be found on the CIHT website (www.ciht.org.uk/education).

Q. How much does it cost to apply for EngTech, IEng or CEng?

All fees are given on the CIHT website (www.ciht.org.uk/education).

Q. How long will it take to assess my Technical Report/Further Learning Report?

It may take up to six weeks to assess your Technical Report or Further Learning Report.

Q. My qualifications were obtained outside the UK. Can I still apply for EngTech, IEng or CEng?

Yes, but your qualifications must be equivalent to the relevant academic benchmark set by the Engineering Council. Initial assessment will confirm whether or not your qualifications are deemed equivalent.

Q. Can I transfer my Engineering Council registration to CIHT?

Yes. Transfer details are available on the CIHT website (www.ciht.org.uk/transferform).
