3 COMMENT FROM THE EDITOR

Aesop relates the story that once upon a time the Fox invited the Stork to

dinner and put before her some soup in a very shallow dish. The Fox could

easily lap it up, but the Stork could only wet the end of her long bill in it,

and left the meal as hungry as when she began. "I am sorry that the soup is

not to your liking" said the Fox.

"Pray do not apologise," said the Stork. "I hope you will come and dine

with me soon and I will show you what a true feast is." When the Fox went

to dinner at the Stork's house she also served some soup but in a very long-

necked jar with a narrow mouth, and all the Fox could manage to do was

lick the outside of it. So he too left a shared meal still hungry.

We recognise that both the Fox and the Stork were plainly bad mannered.

To invite someone to share in a meal and then to serve it in the manner to

which we are accustomed but without taking any account of how they nor-

mally eat, demonstrates that we have little regard for the other person and it

makes the sharing of food an almost meaningless gesture. To be meaning-

ful, the sharing of food needs to include a genuine interest in each other and

a willingness to understand what makes the other person tick.

Over the years that I have been involved in working across the denomina-

tions I have attended many occasions that have involved a coming together

of those from different traditions of worship. Some have been very good

indeed, as those involved have sought to understand where others have

come from and have embraced aspects of other traditions that have cor-

rected and enriched their own. Those who have come with the attitude

'What can I learn from my brothers and sisters?' have rarely gone away dis-

appointed.

But such times have been few. Too often I have been unable to see any at-

tempt to put other guests at ease. Too often the hosts have simply served up

the worship in the way in which they are most comfortable; in the way in

which they themselves are most at ease.

Of course, worship can be wrong - the Israelites were admonished to

flee from such and so should we. But different styles and different cultures

do not simply equate to what is right or wrong, that has much more to do

with content, responding to who God is, as expressed through hearts and

minds. When it comes merely to style and what we are used to, God is able

to embrace the full range of human expressions and sift out that which is

based on preference or familiarity. But we are not so able. To insist that

others adapt to us without any effort to adapt to them, is not unity but bad

manners.

A new framework for local ecumenism

A consultation paper

As part of CTE's remit to support and encourage local ecumenism, a

sub-group of the National Ecumenical Officers have been exploring the

issues facing Local Ecumenical Partnerships and the new ecumenical

contexts in England.

The consultation paper downloadable below is the fruit of their work.

It is not the final word but is meant to stimulate discussion and reflec-

tion. It has been sent to CTE's Member Churches and to Intermediate

Bodies and responses are also invited from others with a heart for

Christian unity.

Read the covering note which is the first page of the document.

• Reflect on the questions in Annex 1.

Send in your thoughts by 31 October 2015 to ‘[email protected]’.

Roman Catholic Proclaim'15 Request

for Prayer In 2015 a significant evangelisation initiative called Proclaim ’15 is being

launched to support, inspire and encourage new expressions of parish evan-

gelisation. A project of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, it is

designed to affirm the good work that is already being done by the Catholic

community, and to provide resources and events to profile and develop new

expressions of Catholic joy and missionary outreach.

This is the first event of its kind in a generation and will bring together an ex-

traordinary group of speakers, workshop leaders and representatives from

every diocese in England and Wales to celebrate joyfully and confidently their

Catholic Faith, and to explore how better to share it.

850 evangelisation representatives will be in attendance, with a quota of day

passes having been assigned, equally, to each diocese. The event is primarily

offered for members of diocesan evangelisation teams and commissions, as

well as to a wider group of co-workers directly working in support of existing

diocesan strategies and plans. The the CTE co-ordinating group, The Churches

Group for Evangelisation, 10 ecumenical guests will be present at Proclaim '15

to share in the event, pray, and reflect afterwards at the request of

the planning group.

The following prayer is for Proclaim '15. Christians are invited to pray regu-

larly and especially on July 11th, in all traditions, for the conference and for

the Holy Spirit 'to go out to the whole world to proclaim'.

PROCLAIM ’15 PRAYER

(You are welcome to reproduce the initiative prayer in print and use it on electronic

platforms.)

Loving Father, You so loved the world that you sent us your only

Son, that we might believe in him and have eternal life. May we en-

counter Jesus Christ anew this day and live the Good News with

joy. Through the power of your Holy Spirit, help us to “go out to the

whole world and proclaim” our faith with confidence.

Give us the courage to witness to the Joy of the Gospel by our words

and actions. Help our parish to become more welcoming and mission-

ary, so that you may be known and loved by all people. We make this

prayer through Our Lord Jesus Christ Your Son, who lives and reigns

with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever, Amen.

Northamptonshire Faith Action Audit Cinnamon Network this week revealed the results of the North-amptonshire Faith Action Audit providing clear evidence of the large scale social action impact and economic value of faith groups are having in the county. The Cinnamon Faith Action Audit for Northamptonshire was launched at an event in Kings Park, Northampton hosted by Adam Simmonds with keynote speaker Canon Andrew White and is the most detailed and comprehen-sive report of its kind to date. Among other crucial statistics the survey reveals that the time alone given by churches together and other faith groups through social action projects in the area was worth over £15 million, impacting tens of thousands of people within the county. On a national level this puts time given by UK faith groups into their communities at over £3 billion a year, sup-porting 48 million beneficiaries. The Audit Steering Committee worked hard to invite all types of faith groups who meet a wide range of social needs including homelessness, social isolation, debt and addiction, to take part in the Northamptonshire Cinna-mon Faith Action Audit in early February this year from both ur-ban and rural areas. The report highlighted that churches and faith groups contributed 1.5M hours of volunteering to Northamp-tonshire last year, with each group delivering £89k worth of sup-port on average. The report also disproved the stereotype of churches and faith groups predominantly working with women and children as it identified that paid staff and volunteers were actively working with people from all ages and with men and women in almost equal measure. GREECE IN THE FOOTSTEPS of St Paul A PILGRIMAGE TO GREECE with the Revd Heather Wilson

23 May - 2 June 2016 From our viewpoint at the beginning of the third millennium it is good to look back to the first century missionary journeys of St Paul and the expan-sion of the early Christian Church. This pilgrimage will bring to life the early churches Paul founded and corre-sponded with. Places so familiar from the New Testament, such as Thessa-lonika, Philippi and Corinth, will be visited. Our pilgrimage is a journey covering the length of Greece. We begin in Kavala (biblical Neapolis), then travel through rural Greece to Thessalonika and on to the fantastic Meteora monasteries and the ancient oracle at Delphi. Our destination, like Paul, is Athens. Here he preached his famous sermon introducing the Athenians to the “unknown God”. Visits during our three night stay in Athens include the Areopagus where Paul preached and the incomparable Parthenon adorning the Acropolis. There will be an opportunity to worship each day and to celebrate the Eucharist together on a couple of occasions.

For a brochure and further information please phone, text or email Revd Heather Wilson Tel: 07702033727 Email: [email protected]

A Special Taizé Worship Event.

One summer, over thirty years ago, I stepped into a minibus with a church

youth group I barely knew (one young member of which has just cele-

brated his twenty fifth wedding anniversary) and went off on an adventure

to a place in the heart of Burgundy called Taizé.

I have since returned many times. With my own children, with dear

friends, and most recently with my husband. Each time has been different.

And each time the same. Taizé is a special place of community and wel-

come, of music and prayer, of laughter, fellowship and silence. My visits

have enhanced my faith and my prayer life immeasurably. The interna-

tional meetings on the hill each summer have included an increasing num-

ber of nationalities and languages, as the world has grown smaller, al-

though many pilgrims still have to spend days travelling to get there.

Some of the “little springtime” which is Taizé can be celebrated in our

worship here. At St. Peter's we have included Taizé music in our worship

and had special Taizé style services, the most recent led by Aimee

Whittaker.

This year, the ecumenical Christian community at Taizé is celebrating

seventy five years of existence. It also celebrates a hundred years since

the birth of Brother Roger who founded the community to encourage and

act out reconciliation in a place which had been torn apart by war and was

hungry for both food and for God's love.

From August the 9th to the 16th the brothers will hold “a gathering for a

new solidarity” on the hill, a special week-long meeting open to partici-

pants 18-35 years old with workshop leaders who work for peace and jus-

tice worldwide.

On Sunday the 16th, in solidarity with them, St Peter's and Emmanuel,

itself an ecumenical church, plan to get together to hold a joint Taizé eve-

ning service of celebration in Weston Favell. If you would like more in-

formation, please contact -Lorraine Bewley-Tippler,

Northampton Soup – 12 noon launch 12th

September

Christ Church, Wellingborough Road, Northampton NN1 5LL

This event is based on Detroit Soup, a model of

local fundraising and community engagement,

which has also been rolled out in Essex. The idea

is that for a £5 minimum donation for soup and

bread you can become part of a funding network

where people pitch ideas and attendees vote on

local projects. The successful project takes the

proceedings raised and feeds back at the next

event. The ideas pitched may cover arts, social

justice, social enterprise and food initiatives. About 4 projects are pitched at an event.

Children eat free and get a vote! Bring your own bowl, (we have got some)!

Signing of Faith Covenant

Representatives of the Police, three councils and seven faith groups signed a covenant to

work together for the good of our town and county at an event at Kings Park Conference

Centre last week. Northamptonshire is the third area of the country to be involved such an

agreement which has been initiated by Faith Action UK in cooperation with the All Party

Parliamentary Group on faith.

Whilst it is recognised that there are fundamental disagreements on many issues between

all the parties involved in signing the covenant, it is also recognised that when it comes to

acts of compassion and social justice there are actually areas of close agreement. The

covenant particularly highlights that, it is in areas of community life where we may agree

rather than those areas where we possibly do not, that we need to seek to affirm one an-

other and work together.

Those who signed the covenant were as follows:

Cllr Chris Miller (Daventry), Cllr Phil Bignell (South Northants) and Cllr Robin

Brown NCC Cabinet Member and Chair of Health and Wellbeing Board

Adam Simmonds, Police Commissioner

GUIDELINES FOR INCLUSION OF ITEMS INLOGOS LOGOS is Churches Together Northampton monthly newsletter. Part of its function is to

share information; something it endeavours to do from a standpoint of grace and generosity.

LOGOS will advertise and inform about events put on by Christian churches or organisa-

tions in and around Northamptonshire other than normal services that take place on a regu-

lar basis. It will also include items which may be of interest to churches even if not

‘Christian’ in content (such as information relating to state law, charities, or things of par-

ticular note in Northampton).

Events may be organised by individuals, individual churches or organisations, or by groups

working together. An event does not have to be a ‘United ‘event to be included and it can

be put on by and for special interest groups – such as mums and toddlers, church leaders or

a Gospel Choir.

However in order to assist LOGOS readers, the editor will endeavour to classify items and

LOGOS CLASSIFIED ADVERTISMENTS

LOGOS adverts are accepted at the discretion of the editor based on guidelines consistent with the ethos of CTN. Advertisers are not

checked by LOGOS and it is the responsibility of the purchaser to satisfy themselves that the products/services offered are genuine

group them together into categories. These are not absolute classifications but generally

speaking those we use are as follows:

CHURCHES TOGETHER ENGLAND, CHURCHES TOGETHER NORTHAMPTON

DENOMINATIONAL, CROSS CHURCH

INDIVIDUAL CHURCH EVENTS AND ORGANISATIONS

NATIONAL /LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND VOLUNTARY SECTOR

INTERFAITH, FUNDING, TRAINING AND RESOURCES, JOBS & VOLUNTEERING

Sometimes information or advertisements for events are worded with such terms as

‘United’, ‘Unity’, ‘Working together’, ’For Northampton’ etc. which would initially seem

to indicate that they might be included in CHURCHES TOGETHER NORTHAMPTON or

at least in CROSS CHURCH. However it sometimes appears that the events are in fact or-

ganised by a single church or organisation, or perhaps by a small group but which is com-

prised of those from a particular church stream or theological standpoint. In such case the

editor would normally follow CTN policy and include them in the INDIVIDUAL

CHURCH EVENTS AND ORGANISATIONS classification.

Events are not classified by their aim but by their origin. So an event put on by one individ-

ual will be classified as such, even if they are aiming for something united and is open to

all churches.

As far as LOGOS classifications are concerned (based on the understanding and agreement

of Churches Together), for something to be advertised as United or one of the other afore-

mentioned terms, at least one of the following should apply:

1) The event should be sponsored by the different churches in a locality (for example

Churches Together Abington comprises all the different churches in that area.)

2) The event will have involved active participation in decision making by individuals or

churches from a spread of denominations or church groupings (Prayer and Praise North-

ampton would be an example of this.)

3) If organised by an individual or single group, they will have agreed co-operation or in-

volvement with a spread of inter-denominational participants before the event is made pub-

lic. (Last year’s fundraising event for C2C and NVCFR was an example of this.)

4) The event is organised by an organisation which already fully demonstrates cross church

activity (such as Northamptonshire Association of Youth Clubs).

5) The event is designated cross denominational or cross church by Churches Together

Northampton or England (such as Women’s World Day of Prayer).

Whilst recognising that some events are organised from the best of motives, and with the

wish and aspiration that they become cross church/denominational vehicles for unity, the

LOGOS editor may nonetheless decline to include such events if they suggest a level of

already agreed unity and co-operation that does not in fact exist.

Such action does not necessarily imply that the editor considers such an event to be wrong

or unhelpful, but it will be done in order to ensure the accuracy of information which is

carried by LOGOS. Joe Story LOGOS editor 2015
