together in Community Hall during the 10:TEN education time for a fun encounter with some wonderful wild creatures.

John LaMedica, otherwise known as “Jungle John,” will be our guestto educate and entertain with his remarkable reptile show. We will

meet “Wally Gator,” a 5-½ foot American alligator, and “Julius Squeezer,” a 12-foot albino Burmese python, in addition

The theme of worship will be “CreationSpirituality” as our response to God’s

CLERGY COLUMNCLERGY COLUMN

RenewalRev. Dr. Gregory JonesSenior Pastor/Head of Staff

2

As we reach the end of Lent, the time for deepreflection on our lives, we move into the dramaof Palm Sunday, the solemn meal of Maundy

Thursday, the agony of Good Friday, and the glory ofEaster – an unmatched celebration of life! And cele-brate the hope-filled news of new life, we will! On East-er Sunday, April 8, we will have two identical worshipservices at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to declare Christ isRisen!

Following our tradition, we will gather in CommunityHall for our famous and delicious Easterbreakfast/brunch prepared by our deacons. You mayenjoy the meal anytime from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Easter marks my final Sunday in the pulpit beforeembarking on my sabbatical, so regardless of when youenjoy your meal, I hope you will join me in Communi-ty Hall from 10:10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. when Fred Iobst(convener of our Personnel Committee) and I talkabout my sabbatical and the coverage at church while Iam away. Given by the Session and made possible by agrant from the Lilly Endowment’s Clergy Renewal Pro-gram, my sabbatical will extend until August.

A clergy sabbatical is designed for rest, reflection, reconnection, and renewal. My Pastor’s Column in theFebruary issue of the Chimes spelled out ways I willaccomplish these goals as well as some of the excitingtravel destinations Camilla and I will explore. (If youmissed it, please go to the home page of our churchwebsite, wpc.org, and click on “Communications.”)

Westminster will be in excellent hands during myabsence. My gifted colleague, Anne Ledbetter, will beour acting head of staff. Our pastoral care assistant, JillGetty, will double her hours to help cover pastoral careneeds. The rest of our church staff – the best in theworld! – will carry on their normal routines to ensurethat our ministry and mission continue to flourish.

Anne will preach about half of the Sundays I am away.Jill Getty and Susan Moseley will each preach one Sun-day, high school seniors from our 180° youth ministrywill preach on Youth Sunday, our Westminster byHeart storytellers will present the Sermon on theMount, and the other Sundays will be covered by guestpreachers.

Our members will assist with worship services. Someare being trained to write and deliver the Prayers of thePeople, others will give a children’s sermon, and wewill continue to have lay volunteers who read themorning Scripture lesson. I think it will be wonderfulto have some of our leaders using their gifts for min-istry in these roles. It is bound to deepen their ownspiritual lives.

I have one favor to ask of YOU. Would you pleasewrite a prayer for me to take on my sabbatical? It canbe anything from one sentence to a full page. It can be arequest for you or a prayer for our world. Yourthoughts can focus on the healing of a loved one or ahope for me during my time away. It can be whateveris on your heart and in any form you choose to say it. Iplan to use these prayers in my personal devotionaltime while I am away from Westminster.

Finally, I want to express my gratitude to each of youwho have expressed your joy and support regardingmy sabbatical. I feel very blessed to serve a lovingchurch family who understands my need to take sometime away from the stresses of ministry to refresh myspiritual life so that I can give my best to God and toour community of faith.

Love and peace,

April 2012

Congratulations, Sarah Hoopes! Sarah Hoopes, daughter of Todd and Dede Hoopes, has been selected by New CastlePresbytery to be the Young Adult Advisory Delegate (YAAD) to the 220th GeneralAssembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Sarah is a senior premed student atElon University in North Carolina.

Being a YAAD at the General Assembly is a high honor and a huge responsibility. Itis an honor because nominations are based on active church membership, apprecia-tion for the work of the church, and evidence of a reflective faith. Sarah Hoopes hasbeen active in the life of Westminster since her family joined when she was a child. She attended Youth Club, was baptized and confirmed in middle school, participat-ed faithfully in our 180° youth fellowship, helped teach children’s classes on Sundaymornings, sang in Westminster’s youth choir, and served enthusiastically as a youthdeacon. Serving as a YAAD is also a responsibility because it means joining the dele-gation of commissioners from New Castle Presbytery and being assigned to a Gener-al Assembly committee. YAADs must read, prepare, and participate in the commit-tee deliberations as an advisor. This means that Sarah will have the opportunity not only to learn about the polity of ourdenomination, but also to influence the work and outcomes regarding particular issues.

Each presbytery in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) may choose one YAAD to attend the General Assembly, which willmeet in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from June 30 to July 7. We can be extraordinarily proud that Sarah Hoopes was chosenat the March presbytery meeting to represent New Castle Presbytery. Sarah is a person of strong faith who is committedto the work of Christ as expressed through our Presbyterian denomination. Congratulations, Sarah, and God bless as youparticipate in such a significant event!

The Midnight Run was such a unique experience! I was inthe back of the van caboose with Lauren serving the world’sbest soup. Some people would stay and talk while they ate,and it was really great to hear what they had to say. Theymade me realize that poverty never ever sleeps. Even whenI'm nice and warm at home, people are outside wantingthat nice hot bowl of soup. So I learned that I need to keepgiving the soup, to make at least one person’s day a littlebetter.

We met people from all walks of life, each with his or herown story of hardship and misfortune. Despite their currentsituation, most of the people we helped had a positive out‐look and were most grateful for everything we gave them.

8 April 2012

On Wednesday, February 22, restoration donor Russell Jones, Property Committee Convener JohnMcFarland, Bill Nace, and Wendy and Denison

Hatch traveled to the Willet Hauser Studios, which haveundertaken the enormous task of restoring two stainedglass windows as a memorial gift to Russ’s parents, RoseB. and John Paul Jones.

The window in the west transept was designed by FrankSwartzlander and executed by the Henry Willet Studio,Philadelphia, and it was dedicated on February 9, 1958(our “Passion Window”). The aisle window was createdby James Powell & Sons, London, and dedicated on Octo-ber 19, 1958 (our “Children’s Window”). The three largelancets of the Passion Window illustrate the story of HolyWeek (Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem on PalmSunday, a Last Supper scene, and the empty cross ofGood Friday), and the two narrower lancets contain thesymbols of Communion (bread and wine, wheat andgrapes). The Children’s Window illustrates Jesus as a boytalking with leaders in the temple, Jesus as an adult hold-ing a young child in his arms and surrounded by olderchildren, and Christ shown with his disciples setting a lit-tle child among them.

All of the members of the group (including two artistsand one civil engineer) were awestruck by the intricaterestoration under way to give an additional century of lifeto these two windows. After surprising the group withFrank Swartzlander’s original design for the Passion Win-dow, stored in the archives of the Henry Willet Studiosince the early 1950s, General Manager Jenkyn Powell leda tour through the large plant and introduced the groupto the craftsmen and craftswomen who are lovingly

restoring the well more than 10,000 pieces of glass, whichare being individually catalogued, de-leaded, cleaned, repaired, re-leaded, and remounted. The craftspersonshave varied backgrounds, including art school and archi-tecture, or have gone through at least a three-year appren-ticeship program in stained glass restoration.

Mr. Powell explained in detail the processes of makingthe full antique, norman slab, and blown sheet glass thatis either produced in a few factories, mostly in Europe, or,in the case of norman slab glass, is no longer being manu-factured anywhere in the world. By chance, at the end ofthe tour, the group met Kenny Crocker, a current WilletHauser designer who worked in the James Powell & Sonsstudio that produced Westminster’s Children’s Window.

The trip to the Willet Hauser studio was a treat for all, andwe at Westminster can be assured that when the windowsare returned this summer, they will truly be better thannew and just as beautiful as the day they were installed.
