HOW DO WE TREAT THE MESSENGER? Let’s not be too hasty in defining who is “the wicked one” and who (namely us) is just! We are very quick to label others as evil, because we tend to label ourselves as good guys. We don’t like it when we are brought up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own behavior. We don’t like to be reproached for trans-gressions of the law or charged with violations of our training. We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths about ourselves when, if we were real-ly good, we would thank them for helping to keep us on the right path. This is the way they treated the prophets and the way they treated Jesus. Is this also the way we treat those whose message we don’t like? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

There will be a second collection for our Society of St. Vincent de Paul on the weekend of September 29 and 30. St. Vincent de Paul is our outreach to the poor in our parish. We help our needy neigh-bors by providing help for food, transportation, and other house-hold assistance. Thanks to your donations, in July we helped 143 people as we served 53 families including children and 19 home-less. We hope you will be generous once again so we can continue to help those in need in the months to come. Please use the enve-lopes in the pews for the collection. If you are interested in finding out more about SVdP and possibly becoming a member, contact Carl Bellone at [email protected] or call the parish office.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL”

The Proclamation of the Gospel—#255

Social dialogue in a context of religious freedom

The Synod Fathers spoke of the importance of re-spect for religious freedom, viewed as a fundamental human right. This includes “the freedom to choose the religion which one judges to be true and to mani-fest one’s beliefs in public”. A healthy pluralism, one which genuinely respects differences and values them as such, does not entail privatizing religions in an attempt to reduce them to the quiet obscurity of the individual’s conscience or to relegate them to the enclosed precincts of churches, synagogues or mosques. This would represent, in effect, a new form of discrimination and authoritarianism. The respect due to the agnostic or non-believing minority should not be arbitrarily imposed in a way that silences the convictions of the believing majority or ignores the wealth of religious traditions. In the long run, this would feed resentment rather than tolerance and peace.

Fr. Terry’s Remarks— We live in times that glory in everyone's right to express themselves and to be able to say what they want. It reminds me of the childhood rhyme '' Sticks and stones will break your bones but words will never hurt you''. I think our parents hoped it would bolster the bullied, or strengthen the over sensitive child. Another failed psychology dictum!! Now I know in the past we tended to drive religion down peoples' throats but there is a tendency today to silence religious beliefs in public so as not to embarrass the agnostic etc. What Pope Francis is proposing this week is respect for all views, religious included and the right to pro-claim them in public, also that we all try to be more considerate. Now I know we were not the best at this ourselves in the past. When we had the power, we used it to our advantage which turns out to have not been so advantageous after all. We are learning, we are looking at the Gospel with new insight, we are finding God everywhere. May our humility in-crease and our hearts grow ever greater.
