A MESSAGE FROM FR. STEVE

40 Days for Life (Planned Parenthood on Clippert) Planned Parenthood of Frandor began performing chemical abortions over a year ago, which is why that is the location of 40 Days for Life this year. Beginning February 14th, please join us in prayer on the wide public berm on Clippert St, across the from PP in Frandor. Our efforts are prayer and fast-ing, not confrontation. Please consider coming out to pray. Be a witness for Christ. Be a witness for Life. Other Upcoming Events On February 10, St. Martha’s Council of Catholic Women are offering a day of formation and fellowship for women. It is called, “Becoming Women of Joy: Sharing the Joy of the Gos-pel.” The speakers will be Mary Govoni, Fr. David Hudg-ins and Fr. Mike Murray. The day will also include breakout sessions, as well as opportunities for quiet re-flection, prayer, and Eucharistic Adoration. Continental breakfast and lunch are included with the cost of the $25 ticket. The deadline for registration is Monday, February 5, 2018. On February 24, the Diocese of Lansing Men’s Conference, “The Man Event” will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Michigan Center, just off US-127, south of I-94. Steve Ray and Fr. Tim MacDonald will be speaking, and Bish-op Boyea will celebrate the concluding Mass at 4:00 p.m., which is the Sunday Vigil Mass. Also on February 24, “Grandly,” a new ecumenical ministry to grandparents will be offering a day-long conference that fo-cuses on how grandparents can support their grandchildren in the faith. The conference will be held at the Work of Christ Community Center off Hagadorn in East Lansing. For more information, please check out their website (grandly.org) or see the promotional cards in the vestibule. Thank you! As we come to the end of Catholic Schools Week 2018, I want to extend my gratitude to all those who have helped our school fulfill its mission historically, those who serve presently, and those whose service is helping us anticipate a bright future. Thanks also to parishioners whose generous support to the parish helps us continue to offer this ministry to parishioners and community members. May we always strive to fulfill the Father’s will that all the children of God would become saints. With deep gratitude for our ministry in the Heart of Lansing, Fr. Steve

Flu Season Safeguards After consulting with health care professionals, I have decided that because of the dangerous strain of the flu virus this year, I will not be encouraging people to make the sign of peace dur-ing Mass, which is liturgically "optional." Note that after the priest says, "The peace of the Lord be with you always," and the people reply, "And with your spirit," the Roman Missal gives the following rubric: "Then, if appropriate, the deacon, or the priest, adds: 'Let us offer each other the sign of peace.'" The Sign of Peace is not a mandatory, even if it is a customary, part of the liturgy. I will return to our custom of exchanging the sign of peace after the end of flu season. It would also be prudent to refrain from holding hands during the Our Father, if that is your posture during that prayer. The Spirit’s Healing Power This week, yet again, St. Mark speaks of the power of the Lord over the evil one. Last week, our Gospel concluded with these words: Jesus rebuked [the evil spirit] and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee. And then, this week, we read: ‘“When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many de-mons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him.’ Power for You and Me In His earthly ministry, Jesus revealed the Glory of God in a powerful way by healing people and driving out evil spirits. What is beautiful is that the same Spirit that healed and drove out evil spirits through Jesus is within us through our baptism. John writes about this mystery: “You belong to God, children, and you have conquered [evil spirits], for the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They [the false prophets] belong to the world; accordingly, their teaching belongs to the world, and the world listens to them. We belong to God, and anyone who knows God listens to us, while any-one who does not belong to God refuses to hear us. This is how we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit.” The truth, Jesus tells us, will “set us free.” Jesus is the truth that frees us from the lies of the false prophets and the evil one in the world. Because Jesus is in us by the Holy Spirit, as Jesus triumphed over evil, so we too can triumph over evil. Overcoming Evil in Our World Thanks be to God, we are able to overcome evil by spiritual means, but it’s true that the Lord invites us to use our gifts, empowered by the Word, the Sacraments, and the Holy Spirit, to actively work to overcome evil in our world. Indeed, we are salt, light, and leaven in the world. We should strive to overcome evil by good. And it’s happening! Our efforts through 40 Days for Life are a sign of God’s work in our parish, and we continue to look for ways to bring healing and hope in answer to the lies bound up with abortion. We rejoice in what God is doing in our midst, and look to the Lord for His leading as we proceed.
