Pray With Us On the morning of January 23, we would like everyone to join us in a flash prayer to Saint Marianne. At 7 a.m., the time of her birth, pray: “Lord Jesus, you who gave us your commandment

of love of God and neighbor, and identified yourself

in a special way with the most needy of your people,

hear our prayer. Faithful to your teaching, St.

Marianne Cope loved and served her neighbor,

especially the most desolate outcast, giving herself

generously and heroically for those afflicted by

leprosy. She alleviated their physical and spiritual

sufferings, thus helping them to accept their

afflictions with patience. Her care and concern for

others manifested the great love you have for us.

Through her merits and intercession, grant us the

favor which we confidently ask of you so that the

people of God, following the inspiration of her life

and apostolate, may practice charity towards all

according to your word and example. Amen.

Through the intercession of St. Marianne Cope, I ask for the grace of (mention your request).”

Reformation. The irony is that both sides are right: their conflicting beliefs are simply the two horns of a dilemma that has been tearing at the inner fabric of Protestantism ever since its turbulent beginnings. Reflections such as these from a Catholic onlooker may seem a little hard or unyielding to some - ill suited, perhaps, to a climate of ecumenical dialogue in which gentle suggestion rather than blunt affir-mation is the preferred mode of discourse. But logic is of its very nature hard & unyielding; & insofar as truth & honesty are to be the hallmarks of true ecumenism, the claims of logic will have to be squarely faced, not politely avoided.” Rev. Brian W. Harrison, former Presbyterian minister, now an

ordained Roman Catholic priest.

Wisdom from our Catholic Tradition “In the psalms it says, “Sing to the Lord a new song; sing His praise in the assembly.” We are urged to sing to the Lord a new song. It is a new person who knows a new song. But make sure that your life is singing the same tune as your tongue. Sing with your voices, sing with your hearts, sing with your lips, sing with your lives. And if you were to ask me what you should sing in praise of God, and you are busy looking for songs, then know that the singer himself is the praise contained in the song. Do you want to sing the praise of God? Then be yourselves what your speak. If you lead good lives you are God’s praises.” St. Augustine,

bishop; 354-430 AD

Father’s NotesFather’s NotesFather’s NotesFather’s Notes A Ritual of Daily Prayer Rising very early before dawn, [Jesus] left and

went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.

Mark 1:35

I have a friend who gets up at 6 a.m. every morn-ing & goes for a 5 mile run. He has done this con-sistently for many years because he believes it is very beneficial for his health. Such good habits for physical well-being have a counterpart in our spiritual health. Jesus had his early morning ritual of prayer to keep in touch with his heavenly Father. He sacrificed some of his sleeping time in order to pray - a clear sign of his deep commitment to prayer. Mark says when Jesus was at his home in Capernaum, the people constantly came to his door for healings. Although he ministered late into the evening, he was still up before dawn to pray. Both the time & location of prayer were important priorities in our Lord’s life. He chose the early hour & the deserted place. If Jesus thought it was necessary to set aside prime time for prayer, we should be convinced all the more how vital it is for us. Some rise early each morning to attend daily Mass, others to pray in a quiet place in their home. Whatever the setting of our prayer, we should appreciate how important quiet time alone with God is each day. Fr. James McKarns

A Convert’s View “The schizoid history of Protestantism itself bears witness to the original inner contradiction that marked its conception & birth. Conservative Protestants have maintained the original insistence on the Bible as the unique infallible source of revealed truth, but at the price of logical incoher-ence. Liberals, on the other hand, have escaped the incoherence while maintaining the claim to ‘private interpretation’, over & against that of popes & councils, but at the price of abandoning the Reformers’ insistence on an infallible Bible. They thereby effectively replace revealed truth by human opinion & faith by an autonomous reason. Thus, in the liberal/evangelical split within Protestantism since the eighteenth century, we see both sides teaching radically opposed doctrines, even while each claims to be the authentic heir of the

Dear friends, My Dad used to tell me to always find a positive in life situations. I think the positive in having different Priest for our weekend Masses, is that we get a unique perspective each weekend. Didn’t you like Father Corey’s homily on Baptism? “Go home and thank the one who made sure you were baptized!” I also liked Father Kris Boretto’s talk on free will. I thought about that one all week, trying to wrap my head around the idea of God having a plan for my life, then giving me free will, then working his plan out through the choices I make. Awesome. I appreci-ate so much the Priests we’ve had who challenge our thoughts, yet deliver it in an easy to understand way! I can’t thank Howard Barker enough for coming over last week during single digits weather, to take the parish trash out to the dumpster. Also thanks to Dick Barden for stopping on his morning walks to see if any light bulbs are out. The Chili night, sponsored by the social committee was a delicious treat for the 50+ people who at-tended. Thank you Anita Urda for organizing the food and Kelly Erickson for organizing the Bingo afterwards. I’m not sure who had more fun: the bingo players or my husband Chris who called the numbers and then awarded the real and imaginary prizes. He thought the favorite imaginary prize was the 4 years paid college tuition for the parents and the vacation to Disneyland for the kids! Thank you to all who cooked, planned and participated! It was a fun night! We will have to talk to the social commit-tee about planning another Bingo night! Unfortunately for the Norton’s, their volunteer week for shoveling the sidewalks came with some ice and snow! Thank you Jim for shoveling and get-ting that ice off the handicapped parking spots. The snow day for the youth was well attended with 13 youth, but they spent as much time outside in the snow as they did inside talking around the island in the kitchen eating pizza. Like at home, sometimes just talking while you hang out in the kitchen brings the best conversations. We appreciate Jess Trepa for all she does for our youth! Thanks for making ICC your parish home. Stay warm! Peace!~Mary Wentlent
