Dear Friends,

As we continue to celebrate this season of Lent, we take a look at today’s readings to see how God share’s everything with us, including His own Resurrection. In today’s Gospel, we go up to the mountain with Peter, John and James. There we see Jesus “transfigured,” speaking with Moses and Elijah about His “exodus.”

The Greek word “exodus” means “departure.” The word is chosen deliberately here to help us remember the Israelites’ flight from Egypt.

By His death and Resurrection, Jesus will lead a new Exodus, liberating not only Israel but every race and people; not from bondage to Pharaoh, but from slavery to sin and death. He will lead all who follow him to His heavenly Kingdom that Paul describes in today’s second reading.

Moses, the giver of God’s law, and the great prophet Elijah, were the only Old Testament figures to hear the voice and see the glory of God atop a mountain.

Today’s scene closely resembles God’s revelation to Moses, who also brought along three companions and whose face also shone brilliantly. But when the divine cloud departs in today’s Gospel, Moses and Elijah are gone. Only Jesus remains. He has revealed the glory of the Trinity: the voice of the Father, the glorified Son, and the Spirit in the shining cloud.

Jesus fulfills all that Moses and the prophets had come to teach and show us about God. He is the “chosen One” promised by Isaiah, the prophet that Moses had promised. More importantly, He is the Son of God!

If we “listen to Him” as we hear in today’s gospel, we will be rewarded greatly! If we have faith like Abraham, Elijah, Moses, Peter, John and James, we will share in His resurrection, as Paul promises in today’s Epistle.

Be assured of my daily prayer’s,

Fr. Grieco

While it has been very cold in New York this last week, I have been visiting one of my sons in California. I want you to know that not only New York had unseasonal temperature differences. The weather in Los Angeles was also unseasonal.......unseasonably warm! While I didn’t come here for the weather, it is very enjoyable to leave the cold and snow behind for a few days.

Pope Francis was also traveling last week. He stopped over in Cuba, while en route to Mexico, to meet with the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church. This was a meeting of huge significance to all Christians. Pope Fran-cis and Patriarch Kirill after their meeting, issued a statement highlighting their joint concern about issues facing Christians in the world today. Among their concerns were religious liberty and the rise of secularism. Below is a quote from their joint statement:

“… we are concerned about the situation in many countries in which Christians are increasingly confronted by restric-tions to religious freedom, to the right to witness to one’s convictions and to live in conformity with them. In particular, we observe that the transformation of some countries into secularized societies, estranged from all reference to God and to his truth, constitutes a grave threat to religious freedom. It is a source of concern for us that there is a current curtailment of the rights of Christians, if not their outright discrimination, when certain political forces, guided by an often very aggressive secularist ideology, seek to relegate them to the margins of public life.”

This is of particular concern for us. We know that in our society there is a ‘very aggressive secular ideology’ at work. We can blame this or that group for this state of affairs, but the truth is we really should blame ourselves. All too often we remain silent when our beliefs as Christians come under threat. We can blame politicians and advo-cate groups with a special agenda, but we need to be brave, and stand up for what we believe. No one is going to ‘step up to the plate’ on our behalf........it’s up to each of us......each of us......not our neighbor or friend or the person up the block.

The Holy Father and Patriarch Kirill then addressed young people and parents. Their message is very powerful, and calls on both groups to take a more active role in society and in raising their families.

“Today, in a particular way, we address young Christians. You, young people, have the task of not hiding your talent in the ground (Matt. 25:25) but of using all the abilities God has given you to confirm Christ’s truth in the world, incarnating in your own lives the evangelical commandments of the love of God and of one’s neighbor. Do not be afraid of going against the current, defending God’s truth, to which contemporary secular norms are often far from conforming. God loves each of you and expects you to be His disciples and apostles. … Remember that ‘you have been purchased at a great price’ (1 Cor. 6:20), at the cost of the death on the cross – Man for God by Jesus Christ.”

Here the two leaders tell it like it is. Too many of us are ‘hiding your talent’ .....we are not using ‘all the abilities God has given you to confirm Christ’s truth in the world’. They are calling us out! Young people, and in particu-lar young parents, are called, indeed expected, to be apostles and disciples......’you have been purchased at a great price’.

Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill have given us much to think about. Let’s not take too long before we begin to take action. Let’s make an effort to understand, more fully, Christ’s truth, so that we can then pass that truth along to our children and young people. Remember what Francis and Kirill tell us......’do not be afraid of going against the current’.....

As I write this in Los Angeles, (Monday) I see that more snow is expected in New York. L.A. today is 85 and sunny. It’s called....’taking one for the team.........!!

May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen

DEACON LACHLAN

BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN

Don’t Forget Your Baby Bottle! The Holy Spirit Pro-Life Committee is hosting a Baby Bottle Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long Island. The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Did you know that they provide: free pregnancy tests ,maternity housing with eligibility requirements, medical care, referrals, cribs, car seats, diapers and ALL other baby items that are needed. We are asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your change. Most importantly, we are asking you to recite the prayer on the bottle. The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother’s heart to accept the truth. We believe these

prayers lead abortion-minded women to call The Life Center in the first place.

Please return the bottles on February 20th & 21st Let us pray with our whole heart for the lives of our unborn children.
