When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to
his foreman, ‘Summon the laborers and give them their
pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.’
When those who had started about five o’clock came,
each received the usual daily wage. So when the first
came, they thought that they would receive more, but
each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving
it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These
last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them
equal to us, who bore the day’s burden and the heat.’
~ Matthew 20:8-12

A Note From the Pastor
Please call the parish office to sign up children for religious education! Classes are held after the 12:00pm Sunday mass in the parish hall, with the first meeting on September 13. Children in 1st grade begin a 3-year program. Older children are assigned to a class or to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC) based on assessment.
When it was evening, the landowner of the vineyard told his
administrator: Call the workers and pay them, beginning
from the last ones to the first ones. Here, at the time of
drawing the accounts, something strange takes place which
does not happen in normal life. It seems that things are
inverted.
The administrator begins to pay those who were contracted
just an hour before. The salary is the same for all: one
denarius, as it was agreed with the first ones who were
contracted at the beginning of the day. When the first came,
they expected to get more, but they too received one
denarius each. The response of the landowner is the
following: “My friend, I am not being unjust to you. Did we
not agree on one denarius? Take your earnings and go. I
choose to pay the last comer as much as I pay you; have I no
right to do what I like with my own? Why should you be
envious because I am generous?”
These words give the key which indicates the message which
Jesus wants to communicate to us: (a) The landowner was
not unjust, because he acts according to what he had agreed
with the first group of workers: one denarius a day. (b) It is
the sovereign decision of the landowner to give to the last
ones the same amount that he had agreed upon with those
of the first hour. These do not have the right to complain
and claim anything. (c) Acting with justice, the landowner
has the right to do the good that he wants with the things
that belong to him. The worker, on his part, has this same
right. God is different, and His thoughts are not our
thoughts (Isa 55:8-9).

The Pope’s Intention for September 2020:
Respect for the Planet's Resources
We pray that the planet's resources will
not be plundered, but shared in a just and
respectful manner. Let us renew our
devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and
enter more closely into this mystery of
Christ’s love.
The Church has approved and recommended devotion to the
Sacred Heart of Jesus. In our age of religious indifference,
when fervor and charity have grown cold, Jesus exhibits to
the world His Sacred Heart as the symbol of God's infinite
love - the symbol of His own generous self-sacrificing love
for men. Jesus shows His Divine Heart as a furnace whose
burning rays of love are able to reanimate faith and rekindle
love in hearts grown cold and ungrateful.
September—Month of the Seven Sorrows of Mary Our Lady's co-operation in the redemption of the world gives us a fresh view of her magnificence. Neither the Immaculate Conception nor the Assumption will give us a higher idea of Mary's exaltation than the title of co-redemptress. Her sorrows were not necessary for the redemption of the world, but in the counsels of God they were inseparable from it. They belong to the integrity of the divine plan. Jesus Himself was Mary's sorrow, seven times repeated, aggravated sevenfold. During the hours of the Passion, the offering of Jesus and the offering of Mary were tied in one. They kept pace together; they were made of the same materials; they were perfumed with kindred fragrance; they were lighted with the same fire; they were offered with kindred dispositions. The two things were one simultaneous oblation, interwoven each moment through the thickly crowded mysteries of that dread time, unto the eternal Father, out of two sinless hearts, that were the hearts of Son and Mother, for the sins of a guilty world which fell on them contrary to their merits, but according to their own free will.
— Fr. Frederick Faber, The Foot of the Cross
