Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time March 3, 2019 Every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thorn bushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles. — Luke 6:44

THE INSIDE SHOWS In this third Sunday of our reading from the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus speaks of the inner soul and its outer expression. He uses images as he teaches. He addresses all of us. Jesus sees a plumb line connecting the soul with the soul's expression-words and actions. He uses exaggeration to drive home his point. We are urged to clear out the debris that blinds us. He knows that we have an uncanny ability to be blind to our own weaknesses, though they be as big as a board. He knows, too, how willingly we seem to ferret out others' smallest speck-like flaws. And this, too, is for our general consumption; solid old goodness and solid old badness will show eventually. The old Latin saying, which echoes Jesus’ images, is true: “What is bred in the bone will out in the flesh.” By and by, the inside will show through. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — One’s speech shows the bent of one’s mind. Praise no one before he or she speaks (Sirach 27:4-7). Psalm — Lord, it is good to give thanks to you (Psalm 92). Second Reading — We are given victory over death through Jesus. In the Lord our labor is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:54-59). Gospel — A good person produces good, an evil person produces evil. The mouth speaks from the goodness of the heart (Luke 6:39-45). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Sir 17:20-24; Ps 32:1-2, 5-7; Mk 10:17-27 Tuesday: Sir 35:1-12; Ps 50:5-8, 14, 23; Mk 10:28-31 Wednesday: Jl 2:12-18; Ps 51:3-6ab, 12-14, 17; 2 Cor 5:20 — 6:2; Mt 6:1-6, 16-18 Thursday: Dt 30:15-20; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 9:22-25 Friday: Is 58:1-9a; Ps 51:3-6ab, 18-19; Mt 9:14-15 Saturday: Is 58:9b-14; Ps 86:1-6; Lk 5:27-32 Sunday: Dt 26:4-10; Ps 91:1-2, 10-15; Rom 10:8-13; Lk 4:1-13 SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Casimir Wednesday: Ash Wednesday; Fast and Abstinence; Almsgiving Thursday: Ss. Dear Parishioners ASH WEDNESDAY … Ash Wednesday is celebrated on March 6 this year. Masses are at 7 AM, 9AM (in the school auditorium), Noon, and a Mass in Spanish at 7 PM. Ashes will be distributed after each of the Masses (remember we fast and abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and abstain from meat on all Fridays during Lent) REMINDER … Day Light Savings Time begins on Sunday, March 10 … remember to set your clocks ahead one hour the night before. STATIONS OF THE CROSS ... On the Fridays of Lent we will pray the Stations of the Cross. They will take place at 6 PM in English and after the 7 PM Mass in Spanish. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE … During Lent, a few of our Lenten Observances revolve around fasting and abstinence. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church (that's us), the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection. THE SPANISH CHOIR IS IN NEED OF NEW MEMBERS … We invite you to participate with us. All you need is a pleasant voice and the desire to sing to Our Lord, remember that the one who sings prays twice. The rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the Lower Church and arrive at Mass five minutes early. For more information speak to Rosario Granda (Director). KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS … Our Knights of Columbus council is looking for more members. If you are a man who is interested in furthering his faith, and putting his faith to work, please contact Bill Venturini at 347-309-1056. YOUTH MINISTRY … Our Parish Youth Ministry is up and running. Our parish and elementary school children who attend middle school are welcome to drop in from 3PM– 5PM on Mondays. Our parish children of high school age and those children who attend either of our high schools are welcome to drop in on Tuesdays from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM and to attend the Youth Ministry Program on Fridays from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. They will meet in the Lower Church in the Youth Room. For more information please contact Sister Faustina Ferko at [email protected] or (929)436-3200. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR BULLETIN ADVERTISERS ... we are grateful to the many businesses and offices that advertise and support the printing of our Sunday bulletin ... please consider patronizing them and tell them you saw their ad in our Sunday bulletin. MASS INTENTIONS … you can remember a family member or friend with an intention at a specific Mass come to the rectory for a specific date … the offering is $15 and Mass cards are avail- able with each Mass … the intentions can be for a living or deceased person … intentions are printed in the bulletin. MASS FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED ... The last Sunday of each month we have Mass at 12 noon with sign language ... pass on the word to relatives and friends who might be interested ... sign language is beautiful and inspiring to watch.

RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION … Just a reminder that we receive Holy Communion either in our hands, by holding out both hands one on top of the other, or, in our mouths, by sticking out our tongues to receive in the mouth. Both ways are valid. Understand if you are carrying a child in your arms, and both hands are not free, the priest will most likely want you to receive in the mouth. This is to limit the possibility of our Lord, in the form of the Eucharist, falling to the ground. Also remember that the proper response to the priest before receiving Holy Communion is “Amen,” not “Thank you.” BAPTISMS … all Catholics should be baptized … parents should be registered in the parish and attending weekly Sunday Mass in order to have the child baptized … godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation and, if married, married in the church … godparents must be members of a parish and must be attending weekly Mass … if you are going to be a godparent, it makes perfect and reasonable sense that you are practicing the faith and that you are a model for the child. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY ... the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman, a sign of LOVE and LIFE ... Catholics should be married in the church and, if married only civilly, should speak to one of the priests about receiving the sacrament in the Church (called convalidation) ... please know that you are welcome to ask questions and to receive direction and advice about the SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY … Please remember to secure a date for your wedding before making any arrangements with caterers, limo drivers, family and friends. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … the usual practice for Catholic burials is a wake service in a funeral home, a Funeral Mass in the parish church, burial of the body or cremains in a cemetery (preferably a Catholic cemetery) … speak with one of the priests for assistance before a death occurs and speak with a reputable funeral home director about pre-arrangements … cremains (ashes) are held in the same reverence and respect as a body and so they should be treated carefully, respectfully, reverentially and buried as soon as possible after cremation. PARISH REGISTRATION … all members of the parish should be registered and receive parish mailings and envelopes … if you are an adult (18 years and older), you should register to receive the envelopes and other information from the parish … you need to be registered in order to receive recommendation letters, financial statements, tuition rates and other parish related issues … HOW TO REGISTER? Come to the rectory office on Castle Hill Ave. LATE FOR CHURCH? … Why? Please resolve to arrive early for Mass, say a prayer, read the Scripture and be ready when we start it will make the Mass more prayerful and meaningful for all. Remember, if you miss the readings, you miss the teachings of Christ. St. Jerome wrote, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” Getting to Church on time matters. VISITING OF THE SICK OR HOMEBOUND … If you know of anyone who is sick or homebound and would like to receive communion, Please call the rectory to give us your information as well as the information of the person who wishes to receive communion. They must reside in our parish area.

(Salmo 92 [91]).
