St. Francis Xavier
St. Francis Xavier was a Navarrese-Basque Roman Catholic missionary born in the Kingdom of Navarre on April 7, 1506. His father was a privy counselor and finance minister to King John III of Navarre. He was the youngest in his family and resided in a castle which still partially stands today and is in the possession of the Jesuit order. As the young Francis grew, he was surrounded by war. Navarre was the target of a campaign by King Ferdinand of Aragon and Castile, and the kingdom was eventually conquered. When the war stopped and Francis came of age, he was sent to study at the University of Paris. While there he roomed with his friend, Peter Favre. The pair met and were heavily influenced by Ignatius of Loyola, who encouraged Francis to become a priest. In 1530, Francis Xavier earned his master's degree, and went on to teach philosophy at the University of Paris. Xavier was beatified by Pope Paul V on Oct. 25, 1619, and canonized by Gregory XV on March 12, 1622 at the same ceremony as Ignatius of Loyola. He is the patron of Catholic missions and his feast day is on December 3rd.
Why do we Baptize children?
From the earliest times, the Church, to which the mission of preaching the gospel and of baptizing was entrusted, has baptized children as well as adults. Children are baptized in the faith of the
Church. This faith is proclaimed for them by their parents and godparents, who represent both the local Church and the whole society of Saints and believers. “The Church is at once the mother
of all and the mother of each.” (St. Augustine)
Saint Michael, the Archangel, Please guide and protect our Police Officers, Firefighters, Emergency Personnel and First Responders
Prayer for our Troops Almighty God and Father, hold our servicemen and women in
your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for
us in our time and need. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior.
Amen
Reflection Appreciate Life
Do you appreciate the love and support of your family? Can you still marvel at the rising of the sun?
Can you still laugh about a funny situation, or do you find it hard to believe that humor is one of God’s
gift to you? Don’t let your enthusiasm for life wane! Enjoying
and appreciating the beauty of life must be an integral part of your life.
If you put God at the center of your life and thoughts, you will discover that, by appreciating
your life, you will continually move closer to Him, the source of all real life.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly
First Sunday of Advent December 2, 2018
“The days are coming, says the Lord, when I fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and Judah. In those days, at that time, I will raise up for David, a just shoot, he shall do what is right and just in the land….May the Lord increase
you and make you overflow with love for one another and for all, even as our love for you.”
The Holy Season of Advent has begun. A time of yearning, of expectation, of longing that things can be better. As the prophet told of God fulfilling His promise, may we participate in allowing that to happen today.
The advent time is brief, but offers a great opportunity to do two things. Consider what it was like before the coming of the Messiah, the chaos, the desire, the need for the Father to send someone.
Consider our time, when the same disturbing chaos dominates our thinking with wars, poverty, hate expressed in so many ways. The expected Messiah, would bring that injustice to an end, and will if we but seriously live these special days in prayer, reflection and signs of love and support of others. In this time of commercialism, may we pause to consider those who are
hurting in any way, those who are poor, those who do not know our Savior.

FFIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT – December 2, 2018
What is the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
It’s important to understand what the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is and what it is not. Some people think the
term refers to Christ’s conception in Mary’s womb without the intervention of a human father; but that is the Virgin Birth. Others think the Immaculate Conception means Mary was conceived "by the power of the Holy Spirit," in the way Jesus was, but that, too, is incorrect. The Immaculate Conception means that Mary, whose conception was brought about the
normal way, was conceived without original sin or its stain—that’s what "immaculate" means: without stain. The essence of original sin consists in the deprivation of sanctifying grace, and its stain is a corrupt nature. Mary was preserved from these defects by God’s grace; from the first instant of her existence she was in the state of sanctifying grace and was free
from the corrupt nature original sin brings.
When discussing the Immaculate Conception, an implicit reference may be found in the angel’s greeting to Mary. The angel Gabriel said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you" (Luke 1:28). The phrase "full of grace" is a translation of the
Greek word kecharitomene. It therefore expresses a characteristic quality of Mary.
The traditional translation, "full of grace," is better than the one found in many recent versions of the New Testament, which give something along the lines of "highly favored daughter." Mary was indeed a highly favored daughter of God, but the Greek implies more than that (and it never mentions the word for "daughter"). The grace given to Mary is at once permanent and of a unique kind.Kecharitomene is a perfect passive participle of charitoo, meaning "to fill or endow with grace." Since this term is in the perfect tense, it indicates that Mary was graced in the past but with continuing effects in the present. So, the grace Mary enjoyed was not a result of the angel’s visit. In fact, Catholics hold, it extended over the
whole of her life, from conception onward. She was in a state of sanctifying grace from the first moment of her existence.
