  • FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

SERVING JESUS IN THE POOR A former pastor and a good friend of mine, Monsignor Dermot Brennan, wrote a terrific book on the priesthood. The book is entitled Your Parish Priest; Man of Mystery. The book is

partially an autobiography. In one of the chapters, Monsignor Brennan spoke about his first parish up in Sul-livan County. He was a young priest at Saint Peter’s Church in Liberty. The bell rang in the rectory one day and a man came in with a story. (A common occurrence in recto-ries). The young man claimed that he was on a bus, had fallen asleep and that while he was asleep his pocket was picked and he was without any money whatsoever. The man wanted thirty-five dollars and promised to pay it back. Moreover, he claimed that his brother was a Josephite priest and could vouch for him. Well, as Monsignor Brennan reports in his book, he considered this individual legitimate and gave him a bank check for thirty-five dollars. Isn’t that what a good priest is supposed to do? He really felt good about helping a man who was down on his luck. About a year later as Monsignor reports, he was on retreat at the seminary with a group of several priests. He mentioned the man who needed thirty-five dollars. As it turned out, almost every priest in the room had been visited by that man and had been “taken” with the same story! Obviously, the man did not have a brother who was a priest and his story was totally made up. Well, all priests could probably relate to the anecdote in the book. As a minister of the Lord, a priest is in a difficult position in regards to people who come to the parish looking for “handouts.” We want to be helpful and charitable, but certainly not every story that is presented to us is credible nor is every “need’ legitimate. Here at Saint Charles Parish, we do not want to turn anyone away who is in real need. That is where St. Vincent de Paul Society comes in. The society strives to assist those people who come to us in real need. We do not give money out to people who ring the doorbell here in the rectory. In giving cash, we might be “enabling” people to indulge in a drug or drinking habit. The St. Vincent de Paul Society operates a pantry here in the basement of the rectory. No one who really needs food will ever be turned away. We might wonder, who was St. Vincent de Paul? Well, he was a priest who lived during the seven-teenth century. At first, he ministered among the rich and was a chaplain to a rather wealthy family. But then when he witnessed the deplorable conditions of the poor in his day, he had a conversion experience and dedicat-ed his whole life to the service of those who had nothing. St. Vincent de Paul once said this: “If you consider the poor in the light of faith, then you will observe that they are taking the place of the Son of God who chose to be poor.” He urged people to be more charitable to those less fortunate than themselves. Let us resolve, therefore, to “see Christ” in those who are truly poor and serve Him in them! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
