Sunday, May 31, 2020
These past two months have been a test of our faith, charity, and resiliency... across the globe and here within our own nation. In so many ways we have risen to the occasion... many times exceeding expectations. It has been a common effort for the common good. As we began to realize the implications of this pandemic, measures were enacted to protect the vulnerable, ensure the health of front-line workers, and do everything we could do to safeguard and protect human lives. I wanted to send out a brief update to keep everyone in the loop, since you probably have already read or heard, things in the secular media concerning churches resuming worship. Last week, Governor Cuomo made a statement about religious services being permitted to resume with
gatherings of 10 people or less. Days later, President Trump weighed in with remarks which would seem to remove any restrictions regarding houses of worship. I ask that you be patient and to keep some things in mind. First and foremost, please do not rely on the secular media for accurate information, especially concerning the Catholic Church. The Governor himself has made conflicting statements about houses of worship within this past week...and the President's remarks have swung the pendulum in quite the opposite direction. As a Catholic community we take our directive primarily from our diocesan shepherd, Bishop DiMarzio. Second, returning to public celebrations is, at least for the Catholic Church, not as easy as just flipping on a switch. It will not be as simple for Catholic worship as it might be for other Christian or evangelical churches or nondenominational congregations, whose worship often consists simply of preaching and singing. We celebrate sacramental rituals with many complex components, and as we return to worship, we must implement procedures to ensure the health and safety of all, especially those most at risk. Currently, I simply ask you to be patient and to rely only on information that comes officially from the diocese and from the parish. Anything else is hearsay and speculation. I promise you as your pastor that everyone at St. Mel's will work very hard and as quickly as possible to get back to public celebrations as much as we can do so. As your pastor, I have several responsibilities... and keeping you safe and healthy while you pray here is one of them. Therefore, we cannot have rushed decisions or practices. We are only going to get ONE CHANCE to do this right. We have already endured the deaths of a number of beloved parishioners to this cursed virus. I do not want to increase that number by being cavalier with how we resume our life together as a parish family. It will not be back to normal all at once. The diocese is rolling out our return to worship/church in stages. And so, we will have to take direction from directives issued by the bishop, and we will implement them here at St. Mel's as applicable to our situation. There will be rules to follow when coming back. Because each parish has its own unique set of circumstances, what St. Mel’s does might be a little different in some ways from what other parishes do, and those other parishes might be different from each other. A one size fits all approach will not work. I ask for your continued patience, understanding and spirit of generous cooperation.
Diocese of Brooklyn 4 Stage Plan for the Reopening of Our Churches: Stage 1: Opening of Churches for Private Prayer, Funerals, Weddings, & Baptisms Stage 2: Limited Celebration of Daily Mass (no date has been set) Stage 3: Limited Celebration of Sunday Mass (no date has been set) Stage 4: Celebration of First Holy Communion & Confirmation (no date has been set) So, what can we begin to do in the present moment?
Funerals: Uppermost in our minds and hearts have been the families who have lost a loved one during this crisis. Adding to their grief, they were not able to have the consolation of the Mass of Christian Burial. We are now able console the grieving with a service inside the church but without a Mass. However, the attendees would be strictly limited to 10 family members (masks and social distancing required).
Weddings: Most of our engaged couples rescheduled their weddings early on in this crisis.
There are a few who are still scheduled for late June or early July. These weddings can now be celebrated. However, with the same restrictions as noted above. They will be strictly limited to 10 persons (masks and social distancing required).
The exchange of vows will take place at a Ceremony and not a Mass. Baptisms: As you can imagine, there are families who have been waiting to have their
child baptized. All of these will have to be rescheduled and they will have to be celebrated individually rather than the "group Baptisms" we would normally have on a Sunday afternoon. If you would like to schedule a Baptism, please contact me at the rectory. Each ceremony will be strictly limited to 10 persons (masks and social distancing required).
Confessions: This is the next phase on our "re-opening" that is being worked out. Because
of social distancing requirements, the confessionals in church will not be used. The unique nature of this Sacrament has certain elements that must be safeguarded while we balance that with abiding by the current health restrictions. Presently, if you wish to go to confession, please make an appointment with either me or Father Barozzi by calling the rectory. Please be sure to come to your appointment with a mask.
Anointing of the Sick: One of the parish priests will administer the Sacrament as requested
according to the usual safety measures in place. Please be aware that at present priests are not permitted to enter hospitals. Hospital chaplains are assigned to our local/ city hospitals and should be contacted to administer the anointing.
And so, beginning Tuesday, May 26th, the church will be open for Prayer and Private
Devotion ONLY weekdays 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM and weekends 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. A
mask must always be worn while praying in the church and please respect the social
distancing requirement of a minimum of 6ft from the person in front of you. Please
refrain from touching statues and devotional items. While there will be sanitizer available at
the doors of the church, I encourage you to bring your own. The bishop strongly
encourages the elderly and anyone who is sick/with a temperature to stay home. The
church will be daily disinfected.
At this point no date has been given regarding the celebration of public Sunday or Daily Mass. Therefore, we will continue to live-stream our daily Mass. Readying the church for our anticipated return, the pews have been measured out to respect the mandated social distance regulation. Sitting in “your favorite spot” is currently not an option. The seating capacity in church has been drastically reduced. In the main body of the church, 51 persons can sit solo or 102 as couples. The choir section and the lower benches in front of it have been reserved for families to sit together as well as to accommodate those with disability. One of the benefits of our gradual return to worship will be adjusting to the modified space. I am considering adding an additional Sunday Mass in Father O’Malley Hall until we can return to full seating capacity. Using the analogy of scuba diving, one is cautious not to return too quickly to the surface after being underwater lest the pressure of one environment threatens the health of the diver with the bends. We have been under immense pressure since the outbreak of this dreaded virus. It has brought death, disruption, fear, and disappointment. Our gradual return to worship will ensure the care of every person in our community and pave for us a secure and safe environment where we can continue to praise our God and love and support one another in faith and friendship. Continue to consult our parish website, Facebook page, Flocknotes, and weekly bulletin for ongoing worship updates. Honored to be your shepherd, I thank each of you for your generous support of the parish at this time of crisis and your kindness and care of me and Father Barozzi. We love you and pray for you daily. “Patience obtains all things. The one who has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices.” (St. Teresa of Avila) Alive in Hope, I am on deck willing and wanting to serve you and your families. Love, Father Fonti
