Scripture Corner:

THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST (Corpus Christi)

First Reading: Exodus 24:3-8 Moses explained to the people the commandments he had received from God. Upon hearing them, the entire com-munity immediately agreed they would do as God had told them. Moses then sacrificed young bulls and sprin-kled the people with their blood, calling it the blood of the covenant they had made.

Second Reading: Hebrews 9:11-15 Jesus did not offer God the blood of sacrifices, but in-stead he offered up his own blood to cleanse all people of the transgressions they had committed under the first covenant with God. Christ instead brought a new cove-nant, which, if kept, would lead to eternal life.

Gospel: Mark 14:12-16, 22-26 Jesus sent two of his disciples to prepare the Passover supper. During the meal he blessed bread and offered it to them saying, “This is my body.” He then offered them wine and called it his blood, “the blood of the covenant, to be poured out on behalf of many.”

THE NEW YORK CATHOLIC BIBLE SUMMIT 2018 Live the Gospel of Joy! For Bible lovers in the New York metro area, the big day is always the third Saturday in June, the day of the annual New York Catholic Bible Summit. The date this year is June 16. For nine years, the Archdiocesan Catechetical Office and American Bible Society have been combining their resources to gather at the Terence Cardinal Cooke Center on First Avenue and 56 Street some of the brightest lights in the today’s Scripture study world. This year, the theme is “Live the Gospel of Joy,” reflecting Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortations, The Joy of the Gospel (2013) and Rejoice and Be Glad, promulgated just last month. The works will address the joy of being a disciple, how the Bible became a book, biblical perspectives on joy, even headlines from Jesus, and more. At time when the world is very short of joy, our scholars in both the Spanish and English tracks will give you reasons to rejoice. You are invited to join them on June 16 along with some very special guests, including Thomas Cardinal Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, Canada; and Juan José Cardinal Omella, Archbishop of Barcelona, Spain. The cardinals will deliver keynote addresses for the Bible Summit in English and Spanish respectively. Mario Paredes, Presidential Liaison for Catholic Ministries at the American Bible Society, will represent that organization. The principal celebrant of the opening Mass will be Archbishop Bernardito Auza, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations. You will find complete information on the Bible Summit, the schedule, our presenters, and their joy-filled topics at www.archny.org (type “June 16” in search bar). Do make plans to join us. The fee for the entire day, including morning hospitality and lunch is just $25.00.

May 29, 2018 Month of Our Lady Dear friends in the Lord:

This Sunday we will celebrate the beautiful feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, Corpus Christi, where in a special way we honor the Real Presence of Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist. Allow me to tell you about a series that may shed light on this incredible mystery of our faith and make Mass even more meaningful: Presence: The Mystery of the Eucharist, available on FORMED.org.

It just so happens that this year Corpus Christi is celebrated the week after Memorial Day, when we all remember and honor the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives in service to our beloved country. On Memorial Day, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Each Sunday, at Mass, we also remember that Jesus, on the night before He died for us, gave us the gift of the Eucharist to nourish and strengthen us. As important as that memory is, there is something even greater: we have the opportunity to receive the very presence of Jesus in Holy Communion. You might have heard that the Church describes the Eucharist as the “source and summit” of the Christian life. Have you ever wondered what that really means? Do you want to deepen your experience of God’s presence when you receive Him at Mass? As we prepare to celebrate Corpus Christi, I invite you to view Presence: The Mystery of the Eucharist, a new three-part series available on the website FORMED.org. Thousands of Catholics across the archdiocese are currently using FORMED.org, which has movies, books, bible studies and programs for Catholics of all ages. In this newest series, Presence seeks to answer a question that is simple, yet incredibly important: What is so special about the Eucharist? Many parishioners in the archdiocese have already begun watching Presence, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. If you have not yet signed up, don’t worry! Go to Click register, then enter your name, email address and desired password. Hopefully, you will take this opportunity to grow in understanding just how much God loves you, and how His loving presence is available to you in such a special way at each and every Mass.

With prayerful best wishes, I am, Faithfully in Christ Archbishop of New York
