Dear Parishioners,We, the members of the St. Ignatius Racial Justice Subcom-

mittee, feel called to increase our parish’s attention to the prob-lem of racism in our society. We do so because at the core of our shared faith is a belief that every person is made in the image and likeness of God. Each individual possesses the dignity of a human person, and all people are interconnected as part of one human family, God’s family. We recognize that there are many types of injustice in our society that need to be addressed; however, racism is a particularly persistent wound to human dignity and to the unity of God’s family. The U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops has called on American Catholics to pay par-ticular attention to the sin of racism. We are responding to this call, which is powerfully made in the Bishops’ 2018 document, Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love – A Pastoral Letter Against Racism.

Our goal for the coming months is to deep-en our collective understanding about racism, foster reconciliation, and publicly witness to the Church’s commitment to ending racism. We plan to pursue several types of activities that will create opportunities for us to do so:

1. Regular entries in the parish bulletin that educate us about racism and our Church’s teaching, and offer us resources for respond-ing as Catholics.

2. Meetings to which all are invited in which we will hear from speakers, watch a presentation, or read a brief article by someone who has thought deeply about racism and then discuss our reactions.

Our first meeting will take place from 4:00 to 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, November 10. We will listen to and discuss an excerpt from a speech given by Fr. Bryan Massingale, S.J., one of the world’s leading Catholic social ethicists and scholars of Afri-can-American theological ethics, and racial justice.

Later in the year we will have an opportunity to hear from Debby Irving, racial justice educator and writer, author of the book Waking Up White. Irving’s appearance will be sponsored in partnership with BC’s Thea Bowman AHANA and Inter-cultural Center, and will take place on Saturday, February 8th from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., followed by lunch.

3. Opportunities to demonstrate our parish community’s commitment to “Open Wide Our Hearts” through worship, song, prayer and other visible displays (such as banners with messages from the Bishops’ letter), including celebration of Martin Luther King Day, January 20, 2020.

Lovecompels each of

us to resist racism

courageously-From Open Wide our Hearts

We recognize that conversations about racism can be diffi-cult and painful, and that members of the parish enter them with different experiences and expectations. We have all been touched by racism, albeit in very different ways. We are com-mitted to providing a variety of opportunities to learn from each other in authentic encounters, and we hope to have con-versations that will help us to love better, as Jesus told us to do.

Scripture passage to pray about during the week:

”A Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not … like this tax collector’.” Luke 18: 11 .

Might I sometimes be like the Pharisee when I compare myself to more recent immigrants, particularly those who live in poverty?
