THE SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
PASTOR’S DESK
2/19/2017
Some selections from my homily at the Vigil Mass for
Father Dulaney.
I suspect that Father Bill Dulaney will go through the
Pearly Gates on a bicycle, because a bicycle was emblem-
atic of his life. Permit me to draw your attention to three
aspects of that truth.
A bicycle speaks of simplicity. While other priests ride
around town in sedans, SUV’s and CrV’s – some with
heated seats and sound systems - Fr. Bill rode the bus and
the subway and the railroad. Here in the parish, though, his
preferred mode of transport was a bicycle on which he
propelled himself in the open air with his own energy. And
that reflected his lifestyle which was simple, almost aus-
tere. No electronic gadgets. No lavish vacations. His one
indulgence was to visit one or another local eatery for a hot
meal on a Saturday or Sunday evening. The simplicity of
his life reflected the focus of his life: priesthood. Bill’s
happiness consisted in being a parish priest. His riches
were his parishioners, his relationships with Jesus, his
family and friends.
A bicycle fosters sociability. While drivers can honk
the horn and wave at friends while passing, a cyclist pulls
over to the curb for conversation or for an injection of air
into his rear tires. A cyclist, like a pedestrian or a cop
walking the beat, gets to know places and people more
closely and intimately. Fr. Bill was everywhere in Belle-
rose and its environs, greeting people. Children watched
him pull up at the home of elderly neighbors to whom he
was bringing Holy Communion. Merchants knew his
Cont.
routine. The deli man even had his newspapers and roll
ready each morning at the accustomed time, waiting for
“the priest on the bike” to pull up. I would glance out the
window of my office to catch a glimpse of him disappear-
ing into the tunnel.
Fr. Bill had the deeply ingrained instinct of a parish
priest that the deepest enjoyment comes from being with
people. He loved the parishes he served and the students he
taught at high schools. Like myself, he had served this par-
ish years ago, and so we could share our memories of peo-
ple whose paths crossed ours, hijinks in the rectory, nights
at social events and parties. He loved music, especially
from the Great American Songbook; and could he dance –
almost as graceful on the dance floor as on the bike.
The familiar figure on the bicycle, wending his way
through the streets, was Christ among us, a powerful re-
minder of the Gentle Savior who hoofed his way up and
down the dusty roads of Palestine so long ago. Oh, if only
Jesus and the apostles had had bicycles!
Finally, and most importantly, the bicycle promotes and
enhances spirituality. A cyclist wheeling along is really on
the road to contemplation. Taking in the landscape, espe-
cially in spring when all is abloom, reflecting on life as a
pilgrimage into the New Jerusalem, offering prayers and
petitions. As one who used to cycle all over the parish as a
younger priest, I know that the rhythm of pedaling is set to
the Benedicite. “Breezes and winds, bless the Lord. Cold
and heat, bless the Lord. Plants of the earth, bless the Lord.
Birds of the sky, bless the Lord.”
Fr. Bill’s spirituality was quiet, and devoid of show. I
rarely saw him praying the breviary, but last year he had to
replace a volume because it had worn out from his daily
paging. On his nightstand were his rosary, so I suspect
much of his devotional activity took place behind the
closed door of his room early in the day and deep in the
night when I know that he had trouble sleeping.
In closing a prayer to our Blessed Mother.
Dear Lady of the Wayside,
let thy lights be always gleaming,
As though all the darksome ages for the traveler
they have glowed.
So they’ll lead us o’er the desert to the haven
of our dreaming.
To thy Home, O Mother Mary, at the ending of the road.

THE SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 2017
Brothers and Sisters,
In the Fall 2016, St. Gregory’s participated in the first season of Arise. It
was, in the words of all who participated, a resounding success. It’s not
like any other program we have done before. So… just in time for Lent,
we are going to organize prayer circles once again. Some will be held
in parish meeting rooms and some will be held in parishioners’ homes.
All parishioners are invited to join a circle that is convenient for them.
Prayer circles will meet once a week for six weeks during Lent. Each ses-
sion is approximately 90 minutes long. Wouldn’t this be a wonderful
Lenten Devotion?
Please consider joining a circle or forming your own prayer circle. (To
form your own circle, please speak to Sr. Pat Anglin at the Rectory Of-
fice 718-347-3707.) Each circle should have 10-12 participants.
Training to be a facilitator/co-facilitator will be done here at St. Gregory
the Great Parish. We have previously trained facilitators (in September
2016) and they are ready to assist us this coming Lent 2017.
Sign up begins February 12, 2017. Registration forms will become avail-
able after Mass and can be mailed or dropped off at the Rectory, or
you may drop it in the Sunday collection basket. If you participated in
a prayer circle in the Fall, you still need to re-register for the Spring 2017
session.
Whichever prayer circle you select is fine. We would also like to have
an additional Prayer Circle on Thursdays if we reach our goal. Our goal
is 120 participants. May I ask all of you to participate as best you can
and please pray the ARISE prayer for our parish’s success. “Lord, hear
our prayer.”
Sr. Patricia Anglin, OP- Pastoral Associate
