DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS

NEXT SUNDAY, MARCH 11TH. Re-

member to set your clocks ahead one hour

Saturday night.

THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

PASTOR’S DESK

3/5/2017

“They’re gonna make it better next time;

let’s hope for the best.”

- Chevion

Ms. Chevion spoke for legions of New Yorkers as she

sat in Peacock Alley at the Waldorf Astoria for the last

Sunday brunch before renovations in the famed hotel be-

gan on Ash Wednesday.

For the past eight decades, politicians, lovers, and busi-

ness men have been meeting “under the clock” in the

lobby. Now the hands of the Liberty Clock have been

stilled, as time has run out on the structure’s career as a

hotel. When renovations are complete, it will house

mostly condominiums.

Lent is the Church’s annual reminder that time will

run out for all of us. It is, likewise, an invitation – no, a

summons – to allow God to make renovations to our inte-

rior selves. Each year we enter this privileged season

with Ms. Chevion’s attitude. “He’s gonna make us better

next time; let’s hope for the best.”

Lent also sets the clock ticking on the 2017 Annual

Catholic Appeal. Unfortunately, time ran out on us be-

fore we could make it to our goal for last year’s appeal,

and the parish was billed for the amount not received

in the Appeal.

Cont.

This year I am asking that more of our parishioners make

a pledge or gift, no matter how modest. “They’re gonna

make it better next time…” I promised the man from the

Appeals Office who called looking for a check for the

shortfall in the 2016 ACA. “Let’s hope for the best.”

Below on this page you will find 10 out-of-the-box

suggestions for Lent. Let me call your attention to #2:

Throw away or donate something everyday for 40 days.

And let me make the out-of-the-box suggestion that you

do that by throwing some bucks into an envelope each

day during Lent and then donate the whole thing to the

2017 Annual Catholic Appeal at Easter.

We’re gonna make it better next time; let’s hope for

the best!

DISPENSATION - Bishop DiMarzio has granted all

Catholics of the Brooklyn Diocese a dispensation from

abstinence from meat on the Feast of St. Patrick, Fri-

day, March 17th.

Ten out-of-the-box

Suggestions for Lent

Adapted From

Your Modern Family By Becky Mansfield

1. Don’t buy anything you don’t REALLY need.

2. Throw away - or better yet - Donate 40

things in 40 days.

3. Clean up and de-clutter your home (and

GARAGE) before Easter.

4. Refuse to Gossip.

5. No eating after dinner.

6. Give up soda.

7. Say 3 nice things to your spouse and chil-

dren every day.

8. Don’t eat out. Eat in and eat healthy.

9. Replace 30 minutes of TV or electronic

devices with 30 minutes of devotions or

spiritual reading.

10. Refrain from complaining for 40 days.
