2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Mark Church January 20, 2019

Pastor’s Corner This week we are celebrating our annual Catholic Schools Week, a time for us to give thanks to God for having a Catholic School here at St. Mark, and to reflect upon what our goals are for our stu-dents and our school families. Our objective is, first and foremost, to form future Catholic leaders. Perhaps in business, science, technology, the arts, or medicine. But, most im-portantly, we are forming future Catholic leaders in our families and our communities. We place a high value on the education of our students, and we want each one of them to be accepted into the high school of their choice. However, that is not our primary goal. Having a Catholic School is a way for us to share the Good News of the Gospel, and to encour-age each student and family to deepen their relation-ship withe Jesus Christ. It is more then memorizing the Ten Commandments or the Beatitudes. It is learning how we can apply those teachings to our daily lives, and being confident that we have the courage to follow the teachings of our Savior, even when it is difficult. We don't always know what the best thing to do is, but most of the time we do know. Are we ready to follow Jesus and live His teachings in our lives, even in the challenging times? When I am in the classrooms teaching our students, I emphasize the point that Jesus is always with us. He will never abandon us. And, He will never give up on us. All we have to do is ask....and we will receive. Seek... and we will find. Knock.... and the door will be opened to us. During this Catholic Schools Week we are making an effort to enroll more of our parish chil-dren into our school. Many of their parents did not attend a Catholic School, and they don't think that they can afford it. However, many years ago, Father Guerinni established an endowment fund to provide financial assistance to children whose families are active in our parish. We want every child who at-tends Mass here with their families to be able to at-tend our school! As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week, let us take some time to give thanks to all who work so diligently to provide a Catholic education to our stu-dents, and to help from future Catholic leaders! May the Lord continue to bless us always and in all ways,

Father Paul Spellman

FROM OUR PASTOR

Buscar... y vamos a encontrar.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Everybody makes mistakes. It’s a part of life. When you make a mistake don't always linger on it. Especially if there is no fixing it. Everybody wants a redo, but there is something bet-ter, a second chance. Life always offers you a second chance, it’s called tomorrow.

SAFE GUARD THE CHILDREN PROTEGIENDO A LOS NINOS

SCHOOL NEWS NOTICIAS DE LA ESCUELA

Talk to your children about the fine line between obedience and protection Children learn from an early age that adults are figures of authority: teachers, police officers, bus drivers, babysitters. We need our chil-dren to listen to the people who are in charge of them, but this mes-sage must be communicated so that children know it’s okay to stick up for themselves too. Adult predators may try to use their authority to gain control over their victims. Children should know that when it comes to private parts, secrets, and things that seem dangerous or wrong, they shouldn’t worry about disobeying the adult in charge, and instead talk to a trusted adult or a parent.

Learn, Serve, Lead, Succeed Each year the National Catholic Education Association sponsors a nation wide Catholic Schools Week celebration drawing attention to the core values of a Catholic school education including the faith formation of students in Catholic schools. The “learning” focus includes an emphasis on academic excellence and partnerships with parents to support student achievement. In addition, cultivating in students a commitment to being active citizens and future leaders impacts on the types of service projects undertaken each year. Service to others manifests itself in many ways at St. Mark School. During Catholic Schools Week the Kindergarten class will be visit-ing the local fire station and delivering letters of gratitude to those who serve the public in this very important way. First grade stu-dents will be sharing their appreciation for all who work on the en-tire campus and administer to the entire parish community. The Fifth and and Sixth grades will be attending a day-long service workshop sponsored by the The Association of Catholic Student Councils (TACSC) and the 7th and 8th grades will be visiting the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels for mid day mass and a tour. Student Council has been very busy this year leading an initiative focused on Safe Place for Youth. This project includes meal prepa-ration by each grade once a month, tours of the facility to build un-derstanding and support and fundraising for program development. Parents support the meal preparation each month helping students to make a difference locally. In addition to supporting SPY, Student Council has undertaken a used battery recycling program. There is a drop-off station just inside the main entrance to the school build-ing and students make sure that the batteries are taken to an author-ized battery recycling center. It’s a bold endeavor and one that rais-es awareness and supports responsible behavior by all. This year there are 300 students enrolled in St. Mark School across Transitional Kindergarten through Eighth grade. We welcome all to visit the school for an admission outreach program. The next one will take place on February 12, 2019 at 8:00 AM in the school. All are welcome! Parking typically includes the Garfield lot and the neighborhood for these programs which last from 8:00 AM until 10:30 AM. The program includes a presentation by teachers, exten-sive school tour lead by current parents, a student panel discussion and question/answer session with the principal, Mary Ann McQueen. We encourage all parish families with school aged chil-dren to attend as well as parents of young children who are planning for the future. Contact Jennifer Dao in the admission office at 310-821-6612, extension 222 or by email at [email protected].
