From the Desk of Father Jonathan

You will begin to see around the neighborhood post-ers advertising the upcoming "St Anthony Feast", which will run from Wednesday, June 13th - Sunday, June 17th. I hope you enjoy what I think will be a fun and dignified tribute to one of our most beloved saints. We are making special efforts to improve the cleanliness of the streets during the feast, especially in the early morn-ing hours, and to offer a new set of musical performanc-es. To help us prepare spiritually for the feast, after each daily and Sunday mass from June 1-June 13th, the presiding priest will lead the congregation in a pray-er to St. Anthony. This is a simple way to mark what in Italian is referred to as the "Tredicina a Sant'Antonio", the 13 days leading up to the feast.

Once again, I would like to ask for volunteers to help us keep 187th St. clean during the feast by working one or more evenings, emptying the waste baskets we will put in the middle of the street and sweeping up garbage that is dropped. Next weekend we will have sign-ups for this after all the masses or you can call the parish office and leave your information.

This coming Monday, June 4th we will begin a trial month of prayer and vigilance in our church. Many of you have signed up to pray for a half an hour or more each week. We are calling this ministry "Prayer Senti-nels". You will notice that the back pew, on either side of the aisle will be marked as the place for our sentinels to pray. This will allow us to keep an eye on the church, even as we pray for our neighborhood. Instructions will be placed in that area for what to do if you notice that something is not right (people laying down in the pews, possible theft, etc.). A binder with the daily schedule of sentinels will be in the back of the church. There is still time to add your name!

Finally, please welcome back to the parish for the month of July, Fr. Benedict Adu-Frimpong. Fr. Benedict teaches in a seminary in Ghana but has offered to be with us again for part of the Summer during his break. The Lord continues to provide shepherds for his flock!

God bless, Father Jonathan

PRECIOUS BLOOD

On this solemnity we focus our attention on the Body and Blood of Christ. We listen to the story of the renewal of the old covenant, which Moses sealed by splashing the blood of animals on the altar of sacrifice, as well as on the people. Jesus, whose blood is the blood of the new covenant, shed that precious blood on the cross, saving us from sin and promising us everlasting life. Blood is the life source that courses through our bodies. The precious blood of Christ is the life source for our spirits. Today may we, like the psalmist, offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, whose Body and Blood strengthen us to bring the Good News to everyone we meet.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The origins of today’s solemnity lie in thirteenth-century Belgium. In those days, people seldom received Holy Communion, and never from the chalice. A nun in a troubled convent, Juliana of Liège, devoted her life to stirring up love for the Eucharist, lobbying for a feast day to honor the Blessed Sacrament with Masses and processions. Juliana may have been inspired by the Ascension Day processions in nearby Bruges. Crusaders brought a treasure home to Bruges from Constantinople in 1204: a reliquary said to contain a cloth from Joseph of Arima-thea with which he had helped prepare the body of Jesus for burial. The stain on the cloth was said to be the holy blood itself, and so the people of Bruges built a great basilica to house the relic. Bruges became a great center of pilgrimage because of this treasure, and the proces-sion of the Holy Blood is still one of the greatest festi-vals in Belgium today. The bishop carries the relic through the narrow streets, and the people wear medie-val costumes and act out scenes from the Bible.

PRECIOSA SANGRE
