From the Desk of Father Jonathan

This weekend I am blessed to have family visiting from all over the country. My parents had planned to come for the parish dinner dance this Sunday, and so my sib-lings and I decided we would surprise them by all com-ing together here in the Bronx to celebrate my father’s 85th birthday, which will be October 30th. As you parents who have adult children know, the best gift we can give to our parents is to spend time with them, and when possible, to bring the whole family to-gether. In my family’s case, this is not always easy as we live in various parts of the country, including Indiana, New Hampshire, California, Minnesota, and New York. In moments like this when we manage to pull away from our busyness and come together, we are reminded that we should do it more often! It is so easy to allow time to pass by and fail to prioritize family relationships. When you see my parents and siblings please greet them. They will be very happy to hear all the mistakes I have made and continue to make as your pastor! They will also be able to tell you some juicy stories about how bad I was growing up. Finally, my congratulations and love go out to our dear religious sisters who celebrate this week with us their 25th anniversary of service to our parish! We love you!!

God bless, Father Jonathan

REST IN PEACE + Please pray for Lucia Petti, Michael LoPinto, Sr., Alice Thornburg & all deceased

GRANT THEM ETERNAL REST, O LORD,

~ MAY THEY REST IN PEACE ~ TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first representative body of many Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near to-day’s Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were Carthusian monks who refused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution was particularly vile, since the condemned were hanged and their living bodies quar-tered to be displayed around London as a horrific warning. Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women prac-tices contemplative prayer and “spiritual hospitality” in the Benedictine tradition. Oddly, the community is French in origin; it was expelled from France a centu-ry ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life. England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the community in. In gratitude to their new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Ty-burn. In the public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350 martyrs. A Web site visit is possible at www.tyburnconvent.org.uk.

ANTORCHA GUADALUPANA

+ SAINT OF THE WEEK +

ST. MARTIN DE PORRES

St. Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru on December 9, 1579. Martin was the illegitimate son to a Spanish gentleman and a freed slave from Panama, of African or possibly Native American descent. At a young age, Martin's father abandoned him, his mother and his younger sister, leaving Martin to grow up in deep poverty. After spending just two years in primary school, Martin was placed with a barber/surgeon where he would learn to cut hair and the medical arts. As Martin grew older, he experienced a great deal of ridicule for being of mixed-race. In Peru, by law, all descendants of African or Indians were not allowed to become full members of religious orders. Martin, who spent long hours in prayer, found his only way into the community he longed for was to ask the Dominicans of Holy Rosary Priory in Lima to accept him as a volunteer who performed the most menial tasks in the monastery. In return, he would be allowed to wear the habit and live within the religious community. When Martin was 15, he asked for admission into the Dominican Convent of the Rosary in Lima and was received as a servant boy and eventually was moved up to the church officer in charge of distributing money to deserving poor.
