FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Happy Easter Season! What a wonderful
Holy Week here at IHM. I am so grateful to Fr. Rafferty and Fr.
Thumma for all they do to make Holy Week so special here at IHM.
Many thanks to all the volunteers, the lectors, the ex-traordinary
ministers of Holy Communion, the ushers, and the altar servers.
Thanks too to the members of the St. Veronica Guild and those that
helped them in arranging all the beautiful flowers in the
sanctuary. And of course, Dr. Adamo and the members of the choir
for uplifting us in such moving and pow-erful ways through
prayerful song and chant. A thousand thanks to all!
Today, while we celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter, we also
celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. We are invited to drink deeply of
God’s mercy and in turn, be merci-ful to others. Today’s
celebration of Divine Mercy has its roots in the spiritual
ex-periences and apparitions shared by a Polish nun, Sr. Maria
Faustina Kowalska who died in 1938. The image of Divine Mercy
(which is next to our pulpit as well as in Our Lady’s Chapel) is
based on her vivid description of one of those religious
ex-periences. Throughout her life, she suffered a great deal with
physical illness but always found consolation in Jesus’ love and
mercy.
Today, pray with St. Faustina (and me!) as we continue to enjoy
the power that flows from the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
dead.
Prayer of St. Faustina Most Merciful God, as many times as I
breathe, as many times as my heart beats, do I want to glorify Your
mercy. I want to be completely transformed into Your mercy and to
be Your living reflection, O Lord. May the greatest of all divine
attributes, that of Your unfathomable mercy, pass through my heart
and soul to my neighbor. Help me, O Lord, that my eyes may be
merciful, so that I may never suspect or judge from appearances,
but look for what is beautiful in my neighbors’ souls, and look
kindly upon them. Help me, that my ears may be merciful, so that I
may give heed to my neighbors’ cries and not be indifferent to
their needs, pains, and challenges. Help me, O Lord, that my tongue
may be merciful, so that I should never speak nega-tively of my
neighbor, but have a word of comfort and forgiveness for all. Help
me, O Lord, that my hands may be merciful and filled with good
deeds, so that I may do only good and charitable acts of mercy to
my sisters and brothers. Help me, that my feet may be merciful, so
that I may hurry to assist my neighbor. May I overcome my own
fatigue and weariness so that I may walk along with them. Help me,
O Lord, that my heart may be merciful so that I myself may feel all
the suffer-ings of my neighbor. And I will rest in safety in the
most merciful Heart of Jesus. May Your mercy, O Lord, rest upon me.
Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and inex-haustible, look
kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us. Merciful Heart of
Jesus, I place my trust in You! Amen.

Pope at Easter Vigil tells Catholics: don't have "museum
faith"
The Church must return to a faith that is alive, and resist the
temptation of becoming a museum en-tombed in regrets and
dissatisfactions, Pope Francis urged Catholics as he celebrated the
Easter Vigil.
In a short and punchy homily - the liturgical high point of the
Church’s year - the Pope issued a rallying cry to Chris-tians to
“go back to Galilee” and discover a living encoun-ter with Jesus.
“To return to a lively love of the Lord is es-sential. Otherwise,
ours is a ‘museum’ faith, not an Easter faith,” Francis told the
congregation in St Peter’s Basilica.
“Jesus is not a personage from the past; he is a person living
to-day. We do not know him from history books; we encounter him in
life.” St Peter’s was plunged into darkness as the Pope began the
vigil liturgy and lit the large Paschal candle from the Easter. The
basilica then slowly emerged out of the dark as each person lit
their candle, symbolizing the new light and joy of Christ’s
resurrection.
Too often, the Pope said, believers allow “stone upon stone” of
disappointments, sins, cynicism and negativity to pile up and allow
a “tomb psychology” to take over where “everything ends there, with
no hope of emerging alive.” He added that it was sometimes easier
for Chris-tians to remain “glum and closed up within ourselves” and
to remain alone in the darkness of our heart because “we feel in
control.”
But quoting the 19th century American poet Emily Dick-inson, he
said: “We never know how high we are. Till we are called to rise.”
Francis stressed that “Easter is the feast of tombstones taken
away, rocks rolled aside” and that “God takes away even the hardest
stones against which our hopes and expectations crash: death, sin,
fear, worldliness.” And he warned that “only in the direction of
our problems” is like “seeking the Living One among the dead” while
dwelling on “regrets, reproaches, hurts and dissatisfactions” is a
“return to the dead.”
By embracing the risen one at Easter, the Pope concluded, “it
will be possible not to run aground on the shoals of sin or crash
on the reefs of discouragement and fear.” He added: “With him, we
will rise again.”

“Many signs and wonders were done among the people at the hands
of the apostles. They were all together in Solomon’s portico. None
of the others dared to join them, but the people esteemed them. Yet
more than ever, believers in the Lord, great numbers of men and
women, were added to them.”
The story of the early church, as related in the Acts of the
Apos-tles, not only re-cords what hap-pened, but moti-vates us
today, to continue the ap-ostolic work. We sometimes fail to see
that our hands are the
hands of the apostles, or even the hands of Christ working in
our world today. Do you remember the story of the reconstructed
chapel destroyed by bombs in Europe? American GIs restored almost
everything, but a shattered statue of the Sacred Heart lacked
fingers and hands. They wisely placed a sign in front of the icon
reading ‘I have no hands but yours.’
We are the hands of the Lord, because we are bap-tized,
missionary disciples. A kind word, a gracious invitation, a gentle
reminder of the love of Jesus to one who is hurting or lonely, can
restore the church in the heart of someone. Reach out! Today, the
Spirit of God asks us to hit the streets and find those seeking,
waiting and yearning for God’s gift.
