STANDING ON THE PROMISES

VERSE 1Standing on the promises of Christ, my King,

Through eternal ages let His praises ring; Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,

Standing on the promises of God.

CHORUSStanding, standing,

Standing on the promises Of God, my Savior. Standing, standing,

standing on the promises of God.

VERSE 2Standing on the promises that cannot fail.

When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,

By the living word of God I shall prevail, Standing on the promises of God.

VERSE 3Standing on the promises of Christ, the Lord,

Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord,

Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword, Standing on the promises of God.

7:30 A.M.2 SAMUEL 23:8-17 (NLT)

8These are the names of David’s mightiest warriors. The first was Jashobeam the Hacmonite, who was leader of the Three—the three mightiest warriors among David’s men. He once used his spear to kill 800 enemy warriors in a single battle. 9Next in rank among the Three was Eleazar son of Dodai, a descendant of Ahoah. Once Eleazar and David stood together against the Philistines when the entire Israelite army had fled. 10He killed Philistines until his hand was too tired to lift his sword, and the Lord gave him a great victory that day. The rest of the army did not return until it was time to collect the plunder!

11Next in rank was Shammah son of Agee from Harar. One time the Philistines gathered at Lehi and attacked the Israelites in a field full of lentils. The Israelite army fled, 12but Shammah held his ground in the middle of the field and beat back the Philistines. So the Lord brought about a great victory. 13Once during the harvest, when David was at the cave of Adullam, the Philistine army was camped in the valley of Rephaim. The Three (who were among the Thirty—an elite group among David’s fighting men) went down to meet him there. 14David was staying in the stronghold at the time, and

a Philistine detachment had occupied the town of Bethlehem.

15David remarked longingly to his men, “Oh, how I would love some of that good water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem.”

16So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew some water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out as an offering to the Lord. 17“The Lord forbid that I should drink this!” he exclaimed. “This water is as precious as the blood of these men who risked their lives to bring it to me.” So David did not drink it. These are examples of the exploits of the Three.

1“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. 6“At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’7“Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ 9“‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

10“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. 11“Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ 12“But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ 13“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

11But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” 12And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”

13Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” 14God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” 15God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’

“This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.

The Trinity UCC Media Team has been charged with creating two upcoming films focused on educating our community and our children on managing their interactions with law enforcement officials.

We are seeking intergenerational actors and actresses to bring to life two scenarios that will be shared nationwide:

o We need 50 volunteers to read, on video, Pastor Moss’ powerful editorial, A Letter to My Son. Using various Chicago settings, individuals will be asked to read the letter from a teleprompter with natural emotion and enthusiasm. All of these voices will be edited into a powerful short film.

o Have you seen our life saving video, Get Home Safely? If not, visit www.gethomesafely.org to view it. We are looking for testimonials based on the 10 Rules to Get Home Safely video.

o Have you been smart enough to not talk until an attorney is present? Do you purposefully keep your hands in view during traffic stops? Have you had an urge to run, but had sense enough not to? If you’ve had an experience, and followed any, or all, of the 10 Rules, we would like for you to tell your story on video.

If you are interested in assisting with these two important projects, please send an email to [email protected]. Let us know if you are interested in working on A Letter to My Son, Get Home Safely, or both.

“Farmacy”

We took poetic license to highlight our intergenerational group of Black farmers from Pembroke, Illinois, who this summer “dispensed” healthy food to residents from as far away as Oak Park, Illinois to Munster, Indiana. We are extremely grateful for their commitment to consistently serve the Washington Heights community. In past years, Trinity’s Farmers Market suffered from a lack of farmers, vendors, and customers. However, with the help of a two-year, U.S. Department of Agriculture grant and exemplary leadership from Trinity’s Farmers Market Manager, Rose Scott, Endeleo successfully marketed and promoted a healthy food “clinic” that resulted in:

• Six farmers (up from just two last season)• Nine vendors (an increase of six)• 10 summer jobs for our youth• 250 customers per week average (including 340 on the last market day!)• A slew of activities (cooking demos, Zumba, yoga, double-dutch jump rope, Smoothie Bike, health

screenings)

We successfully accomplished the dual goal of increasing the number of farmers and customers. In essence, we accomplished much more in that we created a replicable model of cooperative economics that allowed money to circulate within our community. Most important, we provided economic opportunities for students who otherwise would not have had the chance to make money alongside entrepreneurs who look like them. The crown jewel however, is awareness and exposure to Agriculture Technology, a booming field where young people can potentially earn a great living, improve health outcomes and mitigate the reliance on medication in our community.

Now that’s a healthy prescription! Thanks everyone!

2016 Churchwide Theme and ScripturesTheme: “The Fruit of The Spirit: Taste and See!”

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

January – LoveHe answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27 (NRSV)

February – JoyNehemiah said, “Go and enjoy good food and sweet drinks. Send some to people who have none, because today is a holy day to the Lord. Don’t be sad, because the joy of the Lord will make you strong.” Nehemiah 8:10 (NCV)

March – PeaceBlessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9 (NIV)

April – PatienceWait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!

Psalm 27:14 (NKJV)

May – Kindness“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other. Zechariah 7:9-10 (NLT)

June – GoodnessWho is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.

James 3:13-14 (NIV)

July – FaithfulnessJesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 (NLT)

August – GentlenessBy the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul, who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world. For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 2 Corinthians 10:1-3 (NIV)

September – Self ControlSo prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. 1 Peter 1:13-14 (NLT)

October – Forgive One Another Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32 (NLT)

November – Service One AnotherMy brothers and sisters, God called you to be free, but do not use your freedom as an excuse to do what pleases your sinful self. Serve each other with love. Galatians 5:13 (NCV)

December – Build Up One AnotherSo encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT)

MEN’S CHORUS ANNUAL CONCERT

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
