ACTS 16:16-34 (niV)16Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” 18She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.

19When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities. 20They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar 21by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice.”

22The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods. 23 After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.

25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. 27The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”

29The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” 32Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized. 34The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.

To Do JusticeOur Voices Are Critical if Justice Is to be Done

Family,

In October 2014, Police Officer Jason Van Dyke unloaded 16 shots into Laquan McDonald - many as he lay on the ground - in a cold-blooded murder that was to be witnessed by our community and nation when dash cam video was finally forced to be released more than a year later. The video was the catalyst for community engagement and activism against police abuse of power like the city hasn’t seen in decades. That activism forced Superintendent Garry McCarthy to resign, as well as provided much needed impetus for voters to remove States Attorney Anita Alvarez. Our Voices Mattered!

The shooting of Laquan McDonald and the urging of many citizens, also led to the Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division investigation of Chicago Police policies and practices. Specifically, the purpose of their investigation is to:

“. . . determine whether Chicago Police Department (“CPD”) officers have a pattern or a practice of violating the civil rights of members of the public. The investigation focuses on whether officers use unreasonable force and whether there are unlawful racial, ethnic, or other differences in how officers use force. The investigation also focuses on whether CPD and the City of Chicago investigates and holds accountable officers who violate the law or CPD policy, and disciplines them fairly and effectively.”

Our Voices Mattered!

On Thursday, August 18, CPD Superintendent Eddie Johnson announced that he was recommending firing 7 officers for making false statements regarding the McDonald shooting. While the superintendent deserves credit for what many would consider an obvious decision, it is still a considerable move in the right direction. That the community rose up and demanded action, and that there is an open DoJ investigation, certainly helped create the environment to make this decision. Our Voices Mattered!

As the Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division continues its investigation they are looking to hear from the community. They have held several forums around the area to gather testimony from citizens who have had interactions that they want to share. Trinity UCC will host one of these forums:

Department of Justice, Civil Rights DivisionInvestigation of the Chicago Police Department

Community Forum

Saturday, September 10, 201610 a.m. – noon

Trinity United Church of Christ400 W. 95th Street, Chicago ● Atrium

At this event, you will hear the current status of the investigation and be able to ask questions. But, most importantly, you will have the opportunity to tell your story (at least 2 minutes of it) to the DoJ Civil Rights team. Most of us have had interaction with the CPD that we feel was not fair or legal; a traffic stop that seemed unreasonable or unwarranted, an act considered to be abuse, whether physical or verbal, or even a "stop and search" that you felt was wrong. We urge you to come and tell your story.

For those who are not comfortable discussing your situation in public, there will be forums for you to share your testimony. In addition, you can reach the investigation team at 844-401-3735 or by email at [email protected].

Think Bank"There exists today a chance for Blacks to organize a cooperative State within their own group. To doubt that this is possible is to doubt the essential humanity and the quality of brains of Black People." –W.E.B. DuBois

In 1928, the National Negro Business League of Montgomery, Ala., established the Colored Merchants Association (CMA), a cooperative organization of Black grocery stores. Amazing! The purpose of the organization was to reduce the operating costs of Black retailers through mutual support, cooperative buying, and collective marketing — in a harsh market dominated by White-owned chain stores. (Sound familiar?)

Not only was the CMA model successful in Colored Merchant’s Association increasing more businesses and boosting profits, but the Association spread to nearly 18 cities, including Chicago. By 1930, 253 stores were part of the CMA network. Members received support services from the Association, such as intensive training in merchandising techniques, sales training and advertising, and management resources, such as market analysis, inventory, and bookkeeping systems, and collection and credit procedures.

This path to economic independence is in our DNA; it is why the Endeleo Institute is committed to growing Trinity’s Farmers Market into a major social enterprise and tapping into the now $7 billion market for healthy, organic food. Please come and support this market! As Black people, we have consistently proven that in the very worst of times, we’ve done for ourselves the things others thought we could not do: By Any Greens Necessary!

2016 Churchwide Theme and Scriptures

Theme: “The Fruit of The Spirit: Taste and See!”

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

January – LoveHe answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27 (NRSV)

February – JoyNehemiah said, “Go and enjoy good food and sweet drinks. Send some to people who have none, because today is a holy day to the Lord. Don’t be sad, because the joy of the Lord will make you strong.” Nehemiah 8:10 (NCV)

March – PeaceBlessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9 (NIV)

April – PatienceWait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!

Psalm 27:14 (NKJV)

May – Kindness“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other. Zechariah 7:9-10 (NLT)

June – GoodnessWho is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.

James 3:13-14 (NIV)

July – FaithfulnessJesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 (NLT)

August – GentlenessBy the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul, who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world. For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 2 Corinthians 10:1-3 (NIV)

September – Self ControlSo prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. 1 Peter 1:13-14 (NLT)

October – Forgive One AnotherGet rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32 (NLT)

November – Service One AnotherMy brothers and sisters, God called you to be free, but do not use your freedom as an excuse to do what pleases your sinful self. Serve each other with love. Galatians 5:13 (NCV)

December – Build Up One AnotherSo encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT)
