October is the Month of the Holy Rosary & Respect Life Month

“Master, I want to see!” “Master, I want to see!” This is what Bartimaeus, a blind man, begged of Jesus. He wanted to see. Jesus granted his request. Bartimaeus received his sight. What else best could a blind person ever ask than his sight? It is a blind person’s deep-est longing, to be able to see. In our gospel story, Bartimaeus did not only see literally, rather, he was able to see who Jesus really was and saw the need to fol-low Him. He was not only given eyesight but eyes of faith as well.

Like Bartimaeus, we have to pray the same prayer; “Master, I want to see!” We need faith to be able to see the beauty of God’s creation and the beauty of each person. We need faith to see the abundant blessings that we have received espe-cially those which are concealed by trials and difficulties. We need faith to see the loving presence of God in the worst moment of our lives.

On another note, this coming October 30th at 6:30pm will be the culmination for the month of the Holy Rosary. All are invited to come and join in praying the Holy Rosary and in offering flowers and leis to our Blessed Mother. Last Week’s Question: The third member of the

Holy Trinity is sometimes referred to as God the “Holy Ghost”? Does that mean God is a spooky spiritual being?

This Week’s Question: November is the month in which we pray

for the “souls in Purgatory”. What is “Purgatory”?

Ask...The Stewards! As Christian stewards we are called to devote a regular portion of our time to God in prayer. Perhaps we find it intimidating to find the right words when approaching our perfect and all-holy God.

Today's Gospel shows us we need to have our "act together" before we can spend time with Him in prayer. In this passage from Mark, we see that Bartimaeus received a powerful answer to prayer at a very low point in his life. His posture wasn't exactly reverent, and his prayer was-n't eloquent, just a desperate. "Jesus, son of David, have pity on me." But it was a sincere cry from his heart. And Jesus, heard it, and called Bartimaeus to come to Him. And right there on the spot, Barti-maeus experienced a profound moment of personal encounter with our Lord and the healing of his vision he desired.

How simple it is to encounter Jesus!! All we must do is reach out to Him in prayer and we can be assured that He will hear and call us to Him. So let's all take courage this week knowing that Jesus is calling us right now to spend time with Him just as we are, in all our weaknesses. Tell Him what your needs are and then, like Bartimaeus, follow Him, and keep on keeping on in this stewardship way of life. It's a life with the ultimate happy ending.

Answer: While in modern usage the English word “ghost” is used al-

most exclusively as a term for a deceased person who haunts an individ-ual, it didn’t always have this association. The word was derived from the Old English word “gast,” which is related to the German word “geist”, which simply meant “spirit.” For many years Holy Ghost and Ho-ly Spirit were used interchangeably to identify the third member of the Holy Trinity. Eventually Holy Spirit replaced Holy Ghost as the preferred translation of the Latin “Spiritus Sanctus.”(“Holy Spirit”). In reality, both words are valid ways to describe God, but because of the modern asso-ciation of “ghost,” it is no longer in wide usage.

The school gathered to pray a beautiful Holy Rosary on Fri-day, Oct. 19. Student representatives from kindergarten through eighth grade took turns leading the entire student body in prayer. The school ohana also had the opportunity to lead the evening Rosary for four evenings this past week. The school would like to congratulate Father Jo-seph Diaz (Fr. Bong) on the Anniversary of his 24th year as a Priest. God Bless you Father and thank you for all you do!

Students have been learning how to have a heart-healthy lifestyle and raising funds to support the American Heart Association through the "Kids Heart Chal-lenge". On Monday, Oct. 29th, a culminating event with basketball, jump rope, Zumba and more will take place that will have all the students exercising and having fun! Thank you for all your donations to such a worthy cause!

Halloween fun will be kicked off with a wear orange and black dress day! The "Littlest Warriors", children from the Early Learning Center will bring excitement to the school with their Annual Halloween Costume Parade on Wednes-day, Oct. 31s at 9:30 a.m. The entire school comes out to cheer them on and distribute some treats.

On November 1st, All Saints Day, the First Graders will be dressing up as Saints and parade in at the morning assem-bly to the tune of "Oh When the Saints Come Marching In." Let us always remember to look to our Saints for guid-ance and inspiration. The annual Food Drive to support those in need also begins for the month of November.

Family Connection Today’s Gospel offers us a powerful example of faith and persistence in prayer. Those around him rebuked Bartimaeus for his efforts to attract Jesus’ attention. When silenced by the crowd, however, Bartimaeus called out all the more. He is persistent and bold in his confidence that Jesus will show mercy on him and do what he asks. His persistence and great confidence that Jesus would help him reminds us of the confidence with which our children bring to us their needs. In their faith and trust we can find an example of the attitude with which we might approach God in prayer.

As a family, recall a request that has been made repeatedly by one family member to another. Talk about why the request continues to be made if the answer continues to be no. Then read together today’s Gospel, Mark 10:46-52. After reading the Gospel, pose questions such as these to your family: Why must Bartimaeus be persistent in calling out to Jesus? (Some people in the crowd are telling him to be quiet.) What does Bartimaeus do when some try to stop him? (He calls out to Jesus all the more.) When Jesus stops and calls for him, what does Jesus do and say? (He restores Bartimaeus’s sight; Jesus tells Bartimae-us his faith has saved him.) When we pray, God wants us to be so confident he will help us that we don’t permit anyone to keep us from bringing our needs to God in prayer. Invite family members to identify the things they need most from God. Pray these prayers of petition together as a family, confident that God will hear and answer your prayers. Respond to each petition, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on us.” Conclude by praying the Glory Be to the Father.

Padre Pio is the well-known 20th-century Italian mystic with miraculous healing powers who

bore the stigmata, the wounds of Jesus Christ.

Six relics, which have been touring the United States since last year, will be at the Cathedral Ba-silica of Our Lady of Peace, 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Nov. 9, with a Mass at 6 p.m. celebrated by Msgr. Gary Secor.

The relics of St. Pio to be displayed for public veneration are the saint’s glove, crusts of the wounds, cotton gauze with bloodstains, lock of hair, his mantle, and Pio’s handkerchief soaked with his sweat hours before he died.
