Dear Friends In Christ, After seven weeks of medical care in Minnesota and here in Billings involving four procedures on my lung, I feel like I’m on the mend. I couldn't have done it without the prayers and support from my Atonement family. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your love and concern. Your visits, from Pastor Darren, Julie and others as well as your cards and phone calls were very much appreciated. You all lived out our mission statement of “bringing the hope we share in Christ to all.” God Bless! Roger Young

The family of Katherine (Kitty) Baeth would like to thank all our friends and fellow church members for your kind words of sympathy and cards following the sad loss of a our wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. We would like to offer special thanks to Pastor Darren Paulson for his visitation and to Trudi Paulson for her kind words during visitation in her role with Rocky Mountain Hospice. We truly appreciate all the kindness offered to our entire family. Jan Westrope

A tremendous Thank You to Amy Severson. For all the long hours spent designing and preparing the special mailing for the Preschool and Sunday School Postcard. Also we acknowledge the extra hours you spend creating a beautiful Church Website for Atonement Lutheran Church. Our gratitude and appreciation to you. Thank Amy!

Thank you to all who have provided yummy food for our youth dinners with Peace Lutheran on Wednesday evenings! We are so thankful for the new energy in our youth program and are excited to continue these gatherings this Fall! KayDel Shelton

“Peace be with you.” These are perhaps the most powerful words that Jesus has given us. There is much in this world that threatens to unsettle our quieted confidence in God’s presence and care. To the disciples hiding in fear, to his followers grieving beside the tomb, to the ones who feel like the world is turning upside down, to the outcasts who feel like God has abandoned them… “Peace be with you.” It’s not a contrived pacification that we conjure up from within ourselves, but a real, abiding peace that only God can give. This Peace stills our troubled heart, breaks the cycle of anxiety, calms divisions, emboldens us in our work, and sends us into the world with a message of hope and forgiveness.

Peace be with you. This greeting that we share in worship is more than a formality. It is an opportunity to welcome a stranger into this body of Christ. It is a moment to bring Good News to someone with a troubled spirit. It is the chance to allow God to initiate reconciliation with a brother or sister with whom you have conflict.

Peace be with you. It’s a message Atonement Lutheran has been proclaiming for 51 years! Despite our anxiety in transition or conflict in the past or division that still grieves us – regardless our successes or triumphs or whatever else we think we control – God’s message of peace has prevailed. Courageously proclaim, “Yes, we have peace – and also with you!”

Peace be with you. While the economy is still uncertain, your support of the mission and ministry of Atonement as remained consistent – Thank You! Even over the historically “lean” summer months, we are on track with our General Fund that covers the ongoing operational expenses that support the work of your church. The Building Fund that provides for our monthly mortgage payment has also been well supported – actually we’re running ahead of schedule – Alleluia! Please consider slightly adjusting your contributions towards the General Fund, especially as we make plans to expand our staff to the area of youth and family ministry.

Peace be with you. It is not only a claim in this present moment, but an aspiration for future generations. September will be a month to focus on Youth and Family Ministry as we: celebrate Youth Sunday with our youth who have returned from the National Youth Gathering in Detroit this last summer; resume Sunday School, Blessed Beginnings Preschool and Confirmation; learn about church safety as we present Safeguarding God’s Children to our volunteers and congregation; explore staffing opportunities, and much more!

Looking forward to resuming another year of doing the things that make for Peace!

Peace be with you.

Why Survey?

Do you ever feel like you are in “survey overload?” It seems like business’ these days are asking for your opinion with each purchase. “Respond to our survey for a chance to win an all-expense paid trip to….” Anyone ever won that trip?

The Worship and Music Committee will be conducting a survey of our congregation beginning on September 20 and continuing through October 10. You may be asking why? Our motives are simple-we need to have feedback from the congregation about the quality and elements of worship that are most meaningful to you. We can only meet your needs when we know what you are thinking.

The survey is short. Just 10 questions-four of which are optional responses. It should take less than 5 minutes to complete. Our goal is to hear from at least 100 members of Atonement. We will consider the information you provide as we plan future worship services and set the direction for worship at our church. Your voice is important to us-and we want to hear from all of you!

The survey will be distributed in electronic format. If you have not already done so, please provide an email address for each adult and confirmed youth in your family. Email addresses can be submitted to Nancy Rupe in the Church Office. If you do not use a computer, or don’t have your own e-mail address, members of the Worship and Music Committee will be available on Sunday mornings between services from September 20 to October 10 to assist you to complete the survey.

Afraid that you might forget? Don’t worry we will remind you. In closing, we feel obligated to notify you that we don’t have the budget for an all-expense paid trip to a luxury resort to offer for your participation. However, we can provide you with a free sermon every Sunday! See you in church.

MUSIC NOTES

The Atonement Chapel Choir will resume rehearsals for our season beginning on Wednesday September 16th at 7:00 p.m. We will meet in the sanctuary on WEDNESDAYS instead of Thursdays this year. Please pass the word on to your fellow singers. All are welcome to join us to sing some fun, powerful, thought-provoking, uplifting and worshipful music. There are no auditions and our choir family is full of welcoming and friendly folks who rejoice, mourn and celebrate well together. Come and be a part of the choir! Atonement Choir FAQ Do I have to wear a choir robe? No!! We robe up for special events or

special services only, usually twice a year. Do we sing every Sunday? No!! We sing twice monthly, once at the 8:00

service and once at the 10:30 service. Do I need to have been in choir before to sing with the group? No!! If

you enjoy singing and are able to "follow" the music (not necessarily read it, but follow along) you are welcome to be a part of the group. No previous music experience is necessary! Give it a try and see how you do!

How often do we tour and book gigs? We haven't toured yet, but Mercy Me, Michael W. Smith or Third Day could call at any time.... Our extra gigs include Christmas and Easter schedules which will be announced when we near those seasons.

Lutheran World Relief School Kits Update 08/23/2015

Thanks to all who brought items for the school kits. We have collected enough materials to complete

33 kits and enough to partially fill 104 more. To complete these kits we need the following:

320 70 sheet notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper

approx. 8" X 10½"

42 Boxes of 24 crayons

104 Pencil sharpeners

150 Pencils # 2 Pencils with erasers

100 Rulers (with 30 cm on one side)

70 Erasers approx. 2 1/2” long

300 Ball point pens (blue or black ink no gel pens please)

Thanks again for all your help.

A box will be located in the commons area for the collection of these items. A school kit may provide

the only supplies for children returning to school after the disruption of war and may make the

difference on weather the child actually gets an education. They are also used in adult literacy classes.

If you do not like to shop but would like to help, just place your donation in the small school houses

located in the commons area and we will shop for you. Thank you for all your help. Any questions

please call Julie Leno at 248-5359.

Post-Grad Greetings: We are collecting the names, birthdates and mailing addresses of your family members who are away at college, Grad School, or serving in the Military, etc. We would like to send words of encouragement, and care packages to these who are away from home and family especially during holidays and for special occasions. Please supply this information to the church office by phone 245-7004 or email [email protected].

Family Promise News:

Currently Atonement members have donated $500 from 4 families, for Atonement’s name to be listed on the “Giving Wall” for the new Family Promise Day Center. We need a minimum of $1000. Please prayerfully consider giving to this important ministry that Atonement has been a part of for the past 10 years. Your donation will go even further with the matching gift recently offered:

Family Promise has some exciting news to announce! Family Promise has been given a generous matching gift of $25,000 towards the new day center construction at the Galles Building downtown! This gift was made possible by an individual in one of our host congregations, with the stipulation that contributions come from new donors. This is true match of funds. So if you have not contributed to the capital campaign for Family Promise’s new day center- here is your opportunity! Hopefully we will reach our goal of $25,000 so we can have a full match and total donation of $50,000!

Family Promise is holding our first ever golf tournament September 4th

at Peter Yegen Golf Course to benefit the Capital Campaign!

Registration cost is $500 per team of 4 *includes cart, team and flag prizes, BBQ, Giveaways, and 18 holes of golf for you team! Checks can be made payable to FPYV. For questions please contact Butch Crawford at 406-623-0887 or [email protected] or Contact Lisa at 294-7432. Registration begins at 12:00 on Friday September 4

th!

Finally, the Family Promise families will be moving into Atonement on September 13 and staying until the morning of September 20. Please sign up to help in any way that you can. This is a powerful ministry that we have supported for the past decade. Please call Suzanne Bender at 208-5793 or Janie Fitch Danielsen at 861-9349.

God’s Work Our Hands

In the month of October, during coffee hour, our youth will be making No-Sew fleece hats for children in our community. Everyone is welcome for this multi-generational activity! We will be purchasing polar fleece fabric, but would love full yard donations. If you have any questions please contact Nancy King at 855-5238.

Also…

Second Sunday Sandwiches will start back up in September! Join us during coffee hour to prepare sandwiches for the Salvation Army. Watch for details in the weekly Bulletin.

CARE Team Ministry CARE Team will be resuming this fall! This is a vital ministry of Atonement Lutheran Church that is being reorganized. CARE could stand for Christ's Arms Reaching Everyone! CARE Team Members make a commitment (typically one to two hours a week), to respond to the physical, emotional and spiritual requests of people in need-those in our congregation and the community.

While we are looking for CARE Team Members, we are also seeking a CARE Team Leader who will work closely with Pastor Darren to coordinate the volunteers. This is a vital role in order to make this ministry a success, so please give consideration to this important task. Orientation Meeting will be held Monday Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the church. If you have questions please contact the church office at 245-7004 or Julie Amundson at 245-0592 ( temporary contact person)

The quilters have T-Shirts that are cut and ready to be assembled and sewn. Extra hands are

needed for this project. Please contact Eleanor Andersen at 855-1401 or Julie Leno 248-5359 for

more information.
