FROM THE DIRECTOR

Museums are about art and people. In both areas, 2008-2009was a banner year for the Chrysler. We hosted two of themost popular exhibitions in our history, added significantworks to our collections, undertook important artconservation work, and shared our holdings with museumsaround the world. We also welcomed a record number ofvisitors, and offered an unprecedented number of programsdesigned to ensure that the works of art in our care arerelevant and meaningful to them.

A few years back the Museum adopted the Net Promoter Score, a widely used measure of customer satisfaction, as a means of trackingour success in serving our community. This year fully 93% of our visitors would “recommend the experience of the Chrysler with greatenthusiasm” to others. In a world where most for-profit companies are thrilled with a score of 70%, we are delighted that the public isresponding not just to the range and quality of our exhibitions and programs, but to the warmth of the welcome we offer.

As you read this report, you’ll find full details of the past year’s programs, but at the start it is important to note two things. First, nearlyeverything that the Museum undertakes depends upon collaboration. During the past year, the Chrysler worked closely on jointprograms with the Virginia Opera, Virginia Symphony, Virginia Stage Company, Todd Rosenlieb Dance, the Virginia Children’s Choir, the Norfolk Botanical Garden, and a broad range of other cultural and community organizations. We are particularly proud of ourpartnership with the City of Norfolk in commemorating the 50th anniversary of the end of “Massive Resistance” to schooldesegregation in Norfolk. And 2009 also marked the return of Art of Glass. Ten years after the great success of our first regionalcelebration of contemporary glass art, the Chrysler joined forces with the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, the Virginia ArtsFestival, and 22 other arts affiliates from our area to once again make Hampton Roads a place of pilgrimage for glass lovers.

Second, nothing that the Chrysler does would be possible without the hard work of the Museum’s dedicated staff, the commitment ofour volunteers, or the generosity of our community donors. They deserve recognition and hearty appreciation. It is thanks to them thatwe can even begin to achieve our mission of “enriching and transforming lives” by bringing art and people together.

CONSERVATION

The highlight of the year in conservation was the completion of theVeronese altarpiece restoration project, which was performed while thepainting remained on view in our Renaissance and Baroque Gallery.Visitors enjoyed watching the restoration process carried out byConservator Mark Lewis and the Museum’s first National Endowment forthe Humanities Conservation Fellow, Carlos Moya. While the treatmentwas underway, school groups and visitors of all ages had the opportunityto learn more about the process of restoration, as well as the technicalexamination and analysis involved. Once the restoration of the paintingand its carved gilt frame were completed, the Chrysler loaned thealtarpiece to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. There it was a highlight ofthe blockbuster exhibition Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese: Rivals in RenaissanceVenice.

Another focus of conservation this year has been a renewed interest in theMuseum’s collection of historic and period frames. After surveying theframes in our collection, a number of important examples were slated forrestoration. Several of the frames selected included those housing CharlesJoseph Natoire’s Psyche Gathering the Fleece for Venus, and Luca Giordano’sBacchus and Ariadne. Professional frame conservator Wayne Reynolds fromthe Julius Lowy Frame and Restoring Company of New York wascontracted to carry out this work, assisted by the Museum’s conservators. In addition to restoring the best frames in our collection, the departmenthas plans to replace a number of inappropriate examples with originalperiod replacements.

The Chrysler received many generous gifts this year from both ourbiggest supporters and a few new ones as well. Of the 26 works weacquired, we were fortunate, indeed, to receive 18 of them as gifts. Theseranged from a Tiffany daffodil lamp to a nearly life-size painting of twomilitary musicians by Gari Melchers. Our eight purchases werediscriminating—adding depth to our collections. They particularlycomplemented our military-themed holdings, expanded the artistsrepresented in our contemporary glass collection, and built on our alreadystrong holdings of beloved European artists such as Thomas Couture andGustave Doré. Below are this year’s new acquisitions, listed by category:

VISITOR SERVICES

Visitor Services, founded in 2007, encompasses manyareas focused on direct visitor interaction.

WELCOME TO OUR GALLERIES

The first Chrysler staff members that most Museum visitorsencounter are our Gallery Hosts, friendly employees who openthe Museum doors, greet visitors at our welcome desk, and answerquestions throughout the Museum. They also help protect theChrysler collection in the galleries. Gallery hosts have a variety ofbackgrounds—art history, customer service, security—but eachfocuses on providing our visitors with excellent assistance and anenhanced Museum experience.

A major accomplishment this year was the addition of a newwelcome desk that combines the functions of admissions andinformation into one location. The mahogany and marble desk, designed and constructed by local finish carpenter Todd Webb, complements the Museum’s aesthetics and creates a centralizedhub of activity in Huber Court.

THE MUSEUM SHOP

No Museum visit is complete without a souvenir, and our MuseumShop continues to offer a wide variety of merchandise to helpvisitors remember their experience. The most popular itemscontinue to be jewelry, books, glass, and stationery. This year’spopular Art of Glass 2 exhibition offered unique opportunities forspecial sales and trunk shows with glass jewelry artists. Total salesfor The Museum Shop this year were $290,060, a 31% increaseover last year.

NOTE 1 - Organization, stewardship and summary of significant accounting policies

The Chrysler Museum

The Chrysler is one of America’s most distinguished mid-sized art museums.Located in Hampton Roads, a community of 1.5 million in southeastern Virginia, the Chrysler welcomes 160,000 annual visitors from around the world. TheChrysler operates on an annual budget of approximately $7 million and employs astaff of 103.

The Museum is home to a world-class collection of over 35,000 paintings, sculpture, photographs, and decorative arts primarily assembled by industrialistWalter P. Chrysler, Jr. The Museum is particularly well known for its glasscollection, one of the finest and most comprehensive anywhere.

The Museum also administers two Historic Houses, the Moses Myers House andthe Norfolk History Museum, each of which is located in downtown Norfolk. TheMoses Myers House, which was the residence of Norfolk’s first Jewish citizens, includes more than 70 percent of its original late-eighteenth-century furnishings.

In addition to its fine permanent collection, the Chrysler presents each year adynamic schedule of changing exhibitions and a wide variety of interpretiveprograms. Each is designed to make the works on view in the Museum galleriesaccessible and meaningful to a diverse audience.

Through an active program of loans from its collection and through theprofessional involvement of its staff, the Museum maintains an active presence inthe international museum community.

The Museum is particularly proud of its record of community citizenship and goodmanagement. The Chrysler is a regular partner and collaborator with regionalgovernments, businesses, educational organizations, and cultural groups, seeking toleverage resources to provide the highest quality service at the lowest cost. At theinsistence of the Museum’s Trustees, the Chrysler operates every year on a balancedbudget, and is virtually free of long-term debt.

The Museum’s mission is to act as a catalyst. We bring art and people together to enrich andtransform lives. A new free admission policy, adopted in September 2009, along withnewly enhanced interpretive programming, ensures that the Museum is trulyaccessible to the community that we exist to serve.

Financial Statement presentation

The Museum’s financial statements are presented in accordance with Statement ofFinancial Accounting Standards No. 117 (SFAS 117), Financial Statements of Not-for-Profit Organizations. Under SFAS 117, the Museum reports information regarding itsfinancial position and activities according to three classes of net assets: unrestrictednet assets, temporarily restricted net assets, and permanently restricted net assets.

Although the Museum adopted SFAS 117 for financial reporting purposes, in orderto ensure the observance of limitations and restrictions placed on the use ofresources available to the Museum, the Museum’s accounts are maintained inaccordance with the principles of “fund accounting.” This procedure classifiesMuseum resources for accounting and reporting purposes into funds that areestablished in accordance with specified activities or objectives. Although separateaccounts are maintained for each fund, for external financial reporting purposes, thefunds have been grouped based on the presence or absence of externally imposedrestrictions as to their use.

Accordingly, the net assets of the Museum are reported as follows:

Unrestricted net assets

Unrestricted net assets represent available resources over which the Board hasdiscretionary control to use in operating the Museum in accordance with thelimitations of its charter and bylaws. Unrestricted net assets include theoperating fund and Board-designated funds. Board-designated funds are limitedto Board-specified uses, and consist primarily of the reinvested proceeds fromthe sale of collection items.

Temporarily restricted net assets

Temporarily restricted net assets represent resources whose use has beenrestricted by donors to a specific operating or capital need, or time period.

Permanently restricted net assets

Permanently restricted net assets represent resources that are subject torestrictions of gift instruments that require in perpetuity that the Museum investthe original gift with only the investment income derived therefrom being madeavailable to the Museum for expenditure.

Art collection

In conformity with the practice followed by most museums, the collection is notpresented in the accompanying statement of financial position. The value ofaccessions (collection items purchased by or contributed to the Museum) isreported, net of deaccession proceeds received from the sale of collection items, asnon-operating expenditures in the accompanying statement of activities.

The Museum is committed to applying the highest professional standards to thecare and preservation of its unique collection. Accessions and deaccessions areapproved by the Museum’s Board of Trustees and the proceeds from deaccessionsare used solely for the acquisition of collection items. Additionally, in an effort tomaintain the purchasing power of such proceeds, the Board has similarly designatedthe investment income earned on these funds. At June 30, 2009, the Museum’scollection was insured at a level deemed appropriate by management.

Investments and total return, spending-rate policy

The Museum records investments at fair value as determined by quoted marketprices when available. Investments for which a quoted market price is not availableare carried at fair value as determined by the underlying investment fundmanagement. Such valuations are based upon judgments that reflect various factorsincluding, but not limited to, market values when available, restrictions affectingmarketability, operating results, financial condition of the investees and the price ofrecent transactions. Due to the inherent uncertainty of investment valuation, thefair values may differ significantly from the values that would have been used had aready market for all investments existed, and the difference could be material.

For the operating and permanently restricted endowment funds, the Museumutilizes a total return, spending-rate policy in order to provide portfoliomanagement flexibility, preserve the purchasing power (real value) of the funds, and aid the Museum’s budgetary process. To meet these objectives, the Museumfocuses on the overall return on investments, including interest, dividends, and netinvestment appreciation. For the Museum’s budgeting requirements, the Museumuses a spending-rate, currently 5.0%, applied to a five-year moving average of theapplicable Board-designated and restricted funds’ fair value, to determine how much

NOTE 3 - Investments and investment incomeInvestments are carried at fair value and consist of the following:

June 30, 2009 2008Cash and money market funds $ 3,093,470 $ 3,103,110Bonds 6,052,118 6,847,032Domestic equities 6,796,723 6,144,244Foreign equities 6,420,868 7,005,120Equity substitutes 18,204,280 22,096,395

Total investments $ 40,567,459 $ 45,195,901

The fair value of investments and investment income are allocated equitably toeach fund based on each fund’s participation in the investment pool.

During the years ended June 30, 2009, 2008, and 2007 proceeds from investmentmaturities and sales totaled $4,232,449, $2,351,189, and $4,331,145, and purchasesof investments totaled $2,351,788, $1,079,866, and $742,202, respectively.

Use of estimates

The preparation of financial statements in conformity with accounting principlesgenerally accepted in the United States of America requires management to makeestimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilitiesand the disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financialstatements, and the reported amounts of revenues and expenses during thereporting period. Accordingly, actual results could differ from such estimates.

Functional allocation of expenses

The cost of providing the various program and supporting services has beensummarized on a functional basis in the statements of activities and of operatingexpenses. In presenting the Museum’s natural classification of expenses on afunctional basis, direct expenses are aggregated by function and indirect expenses, primarily facilities management and depreciation, have been allocated among thefunctional programs and services benefited.

NOTE 2 - Concentration of Credit RiskFinancial instruments that potentially subject the Museum to concentrations ofcredit risk consist principally of temporary cash equivalents, temporaryinvestments, and investment securities. To mitigate credit risk, the Museum’s cashand temporary investments are placed with highly regarded financial institutions, and the Museum’s investment securities are managed by professional investmentmanagement firms chosen (with the assistance of an investment consulting firm)for their sector expertise.

of the total return will be used for each year’s budget. Income in excess of thespending-rate formula is thus available, subject to original gift instruments, tomaintain or increase the real value of the funds.

The accounting for investment income depends upon the funds involved, as follows:

Unrestricted net assets

Investment income related to unrestricted accession funds is recorded as non-operating income. Other unrestricted income, unless earned on investmentssubject to the spending-rate policy, is reported as income available foroperations. The income on unrestricted funds subject to the spending-ratepolicy is recorded as available for operations up to the level indicated by thespending-rate policy, with any excess recorded as non-operating income.

Temporarily restricted net assets

Investment income on investments of temporarily restricted net assets isrecorded as temporarily restricted income.

Permanently restricted net assets

Nonexpendable investment income is recorded as an increase in permanentlyrestricted net assets. Investment income earned on operating endowments, upto the level indicated by the spending-rate policy, is recorded as unrestrictedincome with the excess recorded as permanently restricted income. Investmentincome earned on endowment accession funds remains with the accession fundsuntil released from restrictions.

Contributions

Contributions are recognized as revenues when pledged, or when received ifunrelated to a pledge. The value of contributed collection items is shown net inthe non-operating accessions line item.

Property and equipment

The Museum building and Historic Houses are owned by the City of Norfolk. Most improvements and additions to the buildings have been funded jointly by theCity and by Museum contributions restricted for such purposes. As the Museumdoes not have a formal lease with the City, the Museum has recorded suchexpenditures as non-operating items. Accordingly, no asset or related depreciationexpense is recognized by the Museum in the accompanying financial statements forsuch expenditures. Furthermore, amounts have not been reflected in theaccompanying statement of activities to reflect the donative use of the buildings.

Furniture, equipment and fixtures are recorded at cost and depreciated using thestraight-line method over periods ranging from three to ten years.

Cash and cash equivalents

The Museum considers all highly liquid investments with maturities of threemonths or less when purchased to be cash equivalents. Cash and cash equivalentsfor purposes of the statements of net assets and of cash flows exclude cash and cashequivalents managed by the Museum’s professional investment managers.

Income taxes

The Museum is exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of theU.S. Internal Revenue Code and has been determined to be an organization that isnot a private foundation. Accordingly, no provision for income or excise taxes hasbeen made in the accompanying financial statements.

Level 1: The asset and liability fair values are based on quoted prices in activemarkets for identical assets or liabilities.

Level 2: The asset and liability fair values are based on observable inputs thatinclude quoted market prices for similar assets or liabilities; quoted marketprices that are not in an active market; or other inputs that are observable andcan be corroborated by observable market data for substantially the full term ofthe assets or liabilities. Level 2 assets include debt securities with quoted pricesthat are traded less frequently than exchange traded instruments.

Level 3: The asset and liability fair values are based on unobservable inputs thatare supported by little or no market activity. Level 3 assets and liabilities includefinancial instruments whose value is determined using pricing models, discounted cash flow methodologies, or similar techniques, as well asinstruments for which the determination of fair value requires significantmanagement judgment or estimation.
