Chapter One

Tribulation: something that causes great difficulty, affliction, or distress The people of Waknuk believe god sent tribulation because he was

angry.

Germinate: to be created and start to develop The people of Waknuk germinated after the nuclear holocaust.

Valiantly: characterized by or performed with bravery Sophie reached home with a sore foot valiantly.

Predicament: a difficult, unpleasant, or embarrassing situation from which there is no clear or easy way out

David is in big predicament after he meets Sophie.

Emphatic: forcible and definite Sophie was extremely emphatic about not taking her shoe off.

Apprehensively: aware or cognizant of something nonphysical such as implications or results

David listens to Mrs. Wender apprehensively.

Commandments: a command or mandate, sometimes referred as the divine proscription (the Ten Commandments)

The people of Waknuk believed that it was gods commandments that they live the simply life.

Affirmation: a positive statement or declaration of the truth or existence of something

Mrs. Wender made an affirmation about Sophie’s six toes.

Perturbed: to disturb and trouble somebody Offences perturbed Joseph Storm.

Blasphemy: something done or said that shows disrespect for God or sacred things

People in the Fringes were outcastes because they were said to have blasphemies.

Offence: crime or evildoing; referred to a blasphemy or a deviation Joseph Storm had a sharp eye for offences.

Definition of Man: God created man in His own image, God decreed that man should have one body, one head, two arms and two legs: that each arm should be jointed in two places and end in one hand: that each hand

If people did not follow or did not fit into the definition of man they were not considered human.

Chapter 2

Tediously: boring because of being long, monotonous, or repetitive David Storm did his chores tediously.

Unrelieved: utter; complete David finished his tasks unrelieved.

Sophisticated: knowledgeable about the ways of the world, self-confident, and not easily deceived

Joseph Storm is a very sophisticated member of the Waknuk society.

Persuade: to succeed in convincing somebody to do something, especially by reasoning, pleading, or coaxing

Mrs. Wender persuaded David not to tell anyone about Sophie.

Rectitude: strong moral integrity in character or actions Joseph’s rectitude towards religion has a good refection on his

family in the region of Waknuk.

Evangelical: enthusiastic or zealous in support of a particular cause and very eager to make other people share its beliefs or ideals mostly in religion

Joseph Storm as the leader of the people of Waknuk is very evangelical towards his faith.

Timorously: by showing fear or hesitancy David timorously approached his father.

Admonitions: rebuke; criticize or reprimand somebody in or against favour of something

Joseph Strom put admonitions against the mutants.

Magistrate: a minor law officer or member of a local judiciary with extremely limited powers

The magistrate decided to disregard the notification of an offence sent by Joseph Storm.

Deviations: a change or difference from what is usual, accepted, expected, or planned; for plants or animals that aren’t like their mothers/fathers (are unusual)

A pumpkin that had two stems was burnt for being a deviation.

Omission: something that has been deliberately or accidentally left out or not done

Placid: tending or appearing to be calm and not easily excited, upset, or disturbed

Dissemble: to hide real beliefs, feelings, or intentions through misleading speech or behaviour

Helve: the handle of a tool such as an ax, pick, or hammer

Dissent: to disagree with a widely held or majority opinion

Uncannily: too strange or unlikely to seem merely natural or human

Acquisition: the act of acquiring something

Confirmatory: to verify the truth or validity of something thought to be true or validBigots: somebody with strong opinions, especially on politics, religion, or ethnicity, who refuses to accept different views

Scathed: to subject somebody to severe criticismPulpit: a raised platform or stand in a Christian church that is used by the priest or minister for preaching or leading a service

Trenchant: direct, incisive, and deliberately hurtful

Slander: the act or offense of saying something false or malicious that damages somebody's reputation

Ecclesiastical: belonging to or involving the Christian Church or clergy

Pestilence: an epidemic of a highly contagious or infectious disease such as bubonic plague

Demise: the end of something that used to exist, especially when it happens slowly and predictably
