Take control of your pain

The Center was created for individuals with long-standing chronic pain symptoms who have not found adequate pain relief, whose use of opioid pain medication is causing problems in their lives, or whose emotional problems are complicating their chronic pain recovery. The range of pain conditions we treat covers musculoskeletal disorders, neuropathic syndromes and Chronic Pain Syndrome. We also address the psychological disorders that often occur with chronic pain, such as depression and anxiety.

We want our patients to put the control of pain where it belongs – under their control. We want them to experience increased pain relief with reduced reliance on pain relievers. We want to empower them with pain management tools that will improve their ability to function and enhance their quality of life.

Has chronic pain taken control of your life?

Inpatient treatment Many patients begin treatment in our inpatient unit. They may be admitted for detoxification from alcohol or other substances, and, when appropriate, a careful, medically managed reduction in opioid medications begins. Simultaneous treatment of psychiatric symptoms

is also provided as needed. The goals of this level of

treatment are diagnostic assessment, safe detoxification,

symptom reduction and stabilization. Inpatient

treatment is usually covered by health insurance.

Transitional living For this level of care, patients reside on campus where their chronic pain is targeted through a mix of therapies, with the aim of increasing physical functioning, psychological flexibility and overall resilience. Treatment begins with an extensive

diagnostic evaluation of the patient’s current chronic

pain problem, as well as its history, and any co-occurring

psychiatric disorders that may be impeding recovery.

This evaluation forms the basis of a specific diagnosis

and an individualized treatment plan.

Evidence-based, patient-focused treatments include:

• Pain Medication Management

• Physical Therapy and Conditioning

• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

• Individual and Group Counseling

Guided meditation and Chronic Pain Anonymous

meetings are also available.

We encourage family participation

We like to include families in the chronic pain treatment

process as much as possible. Over the course of

pain treatment with us, patients can participate with

their families in a 1-day Family Program that provides

family support, education on chronic pain and

communication skills.

For those patients who require treatment for substance

use, we offer an intensive 4-day Addiction and Co-

Occuring Disorders Family Program that provides the

opportunity to learn about the assessment, diagnosis

and treatment of addictions. The program also includes

education on relapse prevention and aftercare strategies,

communication and conflict resolution, and allows

families to meet others in similar situations.

Our treatment team

Our caring, multispecialty chronic pain treatment team

includes psychologists, psychiatrists, pain physicians,

physical therapists, dieticians, nurses and counselors.

Wellness Services

Patients in our transitional living program may also

make use of our Wellness Services which offer a holistic

approach to recovery in recognition of the integration

of body, mind and spirit. Services include yoga,

acupuncture, personal fitness training, meditation and

massage therapy. These alternative therapies are meant

to be complementary to traditional medical care, not a

substitute for it. They are most effective when combined

with medical treatment to help alleviate symptoms of

pain and anxiety. These services are available for an

additional cost.

Aftercare planning

This unique year-long outpatient support program is

open to graduates of the transitional living program. It is

designed to help patients maintain, sustain, and build on

the gains made during their stay at Silver Hill. During the

program, patients meet for day long sessions that include

physical, individual and group therapy. They are able to

refine exercise routines and develop a support network

with other patients. And any new or emergent problems

can be addressed with patients, their families, and their

community clinicians.

The minimum length of stay for this phase of

treatment is 4 weeks, and many patients often

extend their treatment. This program is self-pay.

Patients who complete the residential Transitional

Living Program are offered our Recovery Support

Program for 12 months after discharge. The goal is

to facilitate a smooth transition from treatment to

recovery and increase the likelihood of continued

recovery. The minimum length of stay for this phase

of treatment is 4 weeks, and many patients often

extend their treatment. This program is self-pay.

Our patients get betterIn a survey of patients who completed our residential program the majority reported a reduction in pain, opioid use, and symptoms of depression and anxiety.• 24% mean reduction in reported pain• Greater than 50% reduction in pain interference

with activity and enjoyment of life• Depression and anxiety symptoms were

markedly reduced
