“For us to demonstrate our understanding that the person living with pain is the expert on his or her experience, we need to provide safe and welcoming opportunities for the person to tell us what it is like. Hearing another’s narrative is a different process: this involves empathizing with, understanding the journey from feeling unwell to seeking help, beginning to acknowledge the similarities between this person and ourselves. How might we respond to illness if we were faced with the same circumstances? the same prior history? the same choices?”

Across two studies, we demonstrated that acetaminophen attenuates individuals’ evaluations and emotional reactions to negative and positive stimuli alike. These results build on recent psychological research illustrating that acetaminophen can blunt the intensity with which individuals experience negative events that originate from physical, social, or cognitive sources… In all, rather than being labeled as merely a pain reliever, acetaminophen might be better described as an all‐purpose emotion reliever.

Past research has confirmed an association between ACEs and the painful medical conditions examined in the current study. ACEs have been found to be associated with the subsequent development of arthritis and rheumatism and an increased risk of neck and back pain. ACEs have been found to be associated with the development of headaches and transformation of moderate tension headaches to more severe migraines. There is a growing scientific literature regarding the neurobiological effects of child abuse on brain function and structure that suggest a possible role of early life stress in the pathogenesis of migraine.

Across a range of exposures to ACEs, greater dispositional mindfulness was associated with fewer health conditions, better health behavior, and better HRQOL. [Health‐related quality of life.]

…human brain areas that “light up” during physical pain are also activated during emotional pain induced by social exclusion… These results are consistent with the idea that aversive feelings of social exclusion and physical pain arise, in part, from the same brain regions.

Panskepp J. Feeling the Pain of Social Loss. 2003 Oct 10;  302(5643):237‐239

…compared to men, women have more pain, and it is more accepted for women to show pain, and more women are diagnosed with chronic pain syndromes. Yet, paradoxically, women’s pain reports are taken less seriously, their pain is discounted as being psychic or nonexistent, and their medication is less adequate than treatment given to men. This has been described as a paradox but can be explained as an expression for hegemonic masculinity and andronormativity in health care.
