    Brainstorm

    Design Problem:

Phones, Music Players and valuables such as watches and glasses have been integrated

into modern society, and these items are commonly seen around and across the world.

Since there are so many valuables, problems and accidents are bound to occur, and often

when these things happen, they can cause a large amount of distress to either the user, or

those around him. Many different accidents and problems happen to our valuables

however most of these problems are preventable with the simple use of a protective

holder. For example in 2009 55 Million Ipod Players were sold, and with these largenumbers of Ipods the amount of Ipods broken and/or damaged have increased.

    Why does the problem persist?

Problems persist in many different ways. Two of the most common

ways items are broken consist of water and dropping valuables on

the ground therefore breaking them. I believe that people are not I

believe the people are not well informed about the problem that canhappen when people own an Ipod. Because of the lack of

information available about safety for valuables around the world ,

people do not realize that if you put valuables in your pocket, or on

the table it has a high probability over a period of time, of being

damaged through either an accidental spill or a drop into either a

puddle, swimming pool, bathroom. I understand that if there are so

many valuables accidents are bound to occur however, I believe if a

protective holder was integrated as well as our valuables have, this

will decrease the amount of accidents, leading to a happier world.

Who is affected by these problems?

The problem is global. Each one of us has a valuable of some

sort, and when a valuable is broken the users as well as those

around them suffer because of poor care for their valuables from

two preventable dangers: Water, and when people drop items

    accidently.

What can be done to help the problem?

Since each one of us have valuables, the problems associated with these are global. The

reason that these problem persists is that valuables are vulnerable to things such as water

and dropping valuables on the floor. In order to solve this problem the developers can

either redesign valuables to be more resistant to impacts as well as water. Another

alternative is to give more information regarding the safety of valuables in advertisements.

Thirdly an outside group can design a protective holder which would allow people to

benefit as their valuables would not break. The first two would be impractical due to the

fact that when redesigning for these problems those who have valuables, will not have

access to these new changes which means that the old valuables that are normally on the

Table or in the pockets of a persons trousers allow it to be easily accessed by water, as

well as being prone to the Ipod being dropped on the ground. A possible example is that in

the World, there is a thriving market for damaged electronics as certain areas can be used,

as mobile phones are one of the largest areas of this damaged electronics market. This

shows that valuables are very prone to breaking, and do not last for a long time, unless

there is items such as a protective holder.

    Christopher Woodhead 10.6

Broken Phones such as theonepictured above are a commonoccurrence in modern daysociety. The introduction of ProtectiveHolders can help reduce the

    frequency of this occurring.

Design Brief - How can I help?

The design brief should be a clear statement of what you can do to answer the problem. It

should include target group, general dimensions or the scale of the product (ie will it be afull scale working product or a scale model) and deadline.

I will design and create a product that will be able to conveniently hold valuables, to

prevent accidents from either damaging or destroying valuables to prevent unnecessary

    hardships

The product will be targeted towards both children and teenagers, as I have experiences

with both, and I believe that I understand both mindsets relatively well to help me

understand their mentality, and market it successfully to prevent more damages of

    valuables.

To create this product I will use the following equipment, hardware and software...

    PVC Adhesive Sheet

    MDF 3mm&5mm

    Ramin 6mmx6mm

    Acrylic Paint

Devices that I will use in the creation of my product include:

    Band Saw

    Pillar Drill

    Filing Machine

    Strip Heater

    Fret Saw

The final product will be a fully working model of a product which can hold valuables, that

protects it from both falling as well as water. It will be aesthetically pleasing to attract

users, and make it look stylish. It will be made of MDF, PVC Adhesive Sheet, Ramen and

    painted using Acrylic Paint

    The deadline is June 10th

    1. De Stijl

De Stijl is an art and design movement endorsing many different things but primarily:

    - Pure abstraction- Simplicity of form reduced to the rectangle and other geometric shapes- Colour reduced to the primary colours, along with black and white.

All decorations are removed, and only the pure primary colors plus black and white wereallowed to be used in De Stijl designs.

FUNCTIONHow does the product work, how does it do its job?

Two Traditional Shoes known as Clogs are joined together, and these two shoes form a

base, where object such as pens, pencils or other valuables.

AESTHETICSHas it got a good appearance? What features make it attractive eg shape, form, colours, decoration etc

It has a good appearance. The features that make it attractive are its shape and thecolours used. Firstly the shape makes it attractive because of the fact that it is a uniqueand intriguing design. Secondly this shape gives an impression of symmetry which againmakes it more aesthetic. Lastly, the mix between traditional shoes known as Clogs(Commonly used in the netherlands) and the modern art form of De Stijl, causes the

design to be a mix of old and new or causes the design to be a combination of twocultures, now and then.

Do you know anyone who has broken their valuables?

    Yes

    No

This shows that over 93% of students and teachers in RCHK believe that valuables are easily broken.

This allows justification for my product, and enables me to create it, knowing that it will be used to

protect valuables from breaking. 93% is a huge number of people to know those who have broken

valuables, and hopefully with the creation of my protective holder, this number may decrease for future

    generations.

Do you enjoy Ordinary or Unordinary Designs?

    Ordinary

    Unoridnary

This shows that unoridnary designs are more preferred in RCHK, and as a result of this I will

make my design unordinary and interesting, in order to fufill the wishes of the general public.

This will make my product slightly harder, as I will have to come up with a new design, instead

of basing my of previous designs.

    Product Safety

According to the General Product Safety Rules of 2005 (www.berr.gov.uk/files/

file22713.pdf, Chapter 1.1), a safe product consists of the following things.

    -Duration of use

    -Putting into service

    -Installation; and

    -Maintenance requirements;

-Does not present any risk or only the minimum risks compatible with the product's use, considered to be acceptable and consistent with a high level of protection for the safety

    and health of persons.

    - Dangerous Items that are paramount to safety include

-Sharp Objects that may cause harm

-Objects that are prone to being snapped off and being indigested by minors,

which may lead to Choking, or death by aspiration.

In order for my product to do well it must comply with these regulations. When designing

my product I will be sure to follow these regulations, in order to minimize safety issues.

    Material Advantages and Disadvantages:

    Materals Advantage Disadvantage My Opinion

    MDF MDF can be painted

    in all colors.

Wood Fiber used inthis is very strongand resistant toimpacts.

Can be created intodifferent forms suchas cotton thin andcan be mixed with

    other materials

MDF is easy to workwith (Drilling,Changing)

    MDF can blunt in to

    sharp objects.

MDF has severalcomplicationsassociated with it,but the mostdangerous isFormaldehydewhich leads toirritation in eyes and

    lungs.

    MDF is very strong,

and can be paintedin all colors. Thefact that it is easy towork with, allowsme to finish myproduct, without toomany complications. In order to offset thesafety problems Iwould wear SafetyGlasses for

    protection.

    Ramin Durable

    Strong, and lightallows strength

    without increasingweight.

Ramin is aendangered wood, and using itencouragers those

who chop it down,to continue as ourschool will buymore.

It is very strong andlight, which makes itvery useful. However it is an

endangered, so Iwill use only what Ineed.

    PVC AdhesiveSheet

Good Durability, with a long life cycle

    Is eco friendly, and

    can be recycled.

Very Cheap, can bepurchased in largequalities

    Is resistant to UVLight,.

Low HeatResistance (If theTemperatureincrease to over 70

    Degrees the PVCwill melt)

This material has atransparent colorand different colorstopping on different

colors sheets canresult to a mixture ofboth colors. I cansave paint usingPVC sheets and itsdurability makes it apreferable material

    Method Advantage Disadvantage My Opinion

    Butt Joint Can make corners

    Can build complexshapes

    Can be quicklymade

It is weak, and canbe broken easily.

Pieces must be cut,in order to stickthem together.

Nails are required,as glue is weak.

It cannot hold heavymaterials such asmetal, and willbreak under stressover a period oftime.

Cross halving joint Easy to make

Stronger than buttjoints and will bevery durable whenglue is addedbetween joints

Have to accuratelymeasure the halvesof two pieces for

    joining

    Two componentsmust be cut

    Cannot createcomplex shapes

Very useful, with agood durability andis easy to make.

    PVA Glue Is Waterproof

    Not Toxic

Can be used for alarge variety ofthings.

    Very Strong

Takes 24 hours, inorder to achieve fullstrength

Slow Drying Time, requires attention ofthe user to dry(AKA Pressure)

It can be used formany materialtherefore is a usefulglue. However, dueto its slow dryingtime, I would haveto wait for a longtime to test product.

    Research Summary:

Size: I need to create a box that is 12 x 6 x 1 cm, so that it can fit an Ipod Comfortably, aswell as most phones. However I will increase the dimensions so that it can fit a phone of asimilar length.

    I will make the length 15 x 9 x 2 cm.

    Survey:

    1. Which Art Form Do You Like Most?

I learnt that users enjoyed De Stijl the most, and believed it was the best

    2. Do you know anyone that broke valuables?

I learnt that over 93% of users reported that they knew people who broke their valuables.

    3. Do you like ordinary or unordinary designs?

I learnt that users preferred unordinary designs so that their designs would be unique andinteresting.

    4. Do you think that protective holders would help?

I learnt that the general community believed that protective holders would help.

Using the results from my survey I will base my design on De Stijl and make it extra-ordinary.

clear description of how each test will be carried out. If you intend to use a questionnaire it should be

    designed at this point.

You can test various features of your product.

    Test by using your product.

Test by watching others use your product.

I will test my product through, watching a user, use my product and compare it to my specifications. Thepurpose of it is, to make my product testing as fair and as unbiased as possible. I will choose, one that Ibelieve, will comment on it, as they see it. I will not be choosing a close friend, as that may make the test notfair, and therefore biased in my favor. I can also use a teacher, as their opinion will not be biased, andteachers can give me constructive criticism, and point out errors, while telling me the good points of myproduct design.

Test by asking others what they think of your product.

I will test out my product, by sending an email to [email protected]. This will consist of picture of

my product in various angles, and a questionnaire asking whether they believe that my product functions wellor not.

Q1: Is my product useful to you? If not, why not?

Q2: Is my product easy to use for you?

Q3: Do you believe that my product could be better designed in terms of safety? If so, where could I improvein terms of safety

Q4: Does my product looks aesthetically pleasing?

Q5: Did you like De Stijl in the Design? If so, why so? If not, why not?

Q6: Is it easy to put in Earphones and other accessories in the protective holder?

Q7: Is there enough space in the Protective Holder, that you can easily remove the Ipod/Phone

Q8: Is there too much space in the Protective Holder, that the Ipod/Phone easily falls off.

    Design 1:

    Christopher Woodhead 10.6

    Ipod/Phone Holder:

The Ipod/Phone itself is carefully encased

within the main body of the product itself.

This allows the Ipod/Phone to be carefully

protected from water, as well as resistant

    to impacts.

    Aesthetics:

The pattern of De Stijl, makes this

product looks very interesting and very

appealing to the audience. The mix

    between repeating and varying patterns

of colors allows users to be drawn by its

    uniqueness

    Convenient:

One of the major benefits of this design,

is that it is convenient. The Ipod/Phone

Container is located in the middle.

However the biggest convenience is the

fact that the earphone and charger

sockets are conveniently located next to

    it, allowing greater organization, coupled

    with better safety.

    od/Phone Holder:

this design, the Ipod/Phone is offered

    aximum protection. The Ipod/Phone is

fact encased within the object itself.

he Ipod/Phone Holder is slightly larger

an an Ipod/Phone so that it is far more

onvenient for the user when putting

eir Ipod in, or taking their Ipod/Phone

ut. The only possible way the Ipod/

hone can fall out is if the user turns the

    bject upside down,therefore making this

    oduct extremely safe

    Easy to Make:

    This design is extremely

easy to make as their are 4

main parts. Then a base is

applied to fit within these 4

    components and a hole is

cut or drilled out to fit the

    Ipod Holder

    hape:

he shape is a right angle triangle,

hich makes it very unique compared

other Ipod Holders. The triangle is

ery bulky which makes it hard to

nock over, however the mobility of this

    od Holder is limited.

    Design 3:

    Christopher Woodhead 10.6

    Contrast:

When items are reflected, it creates

a certain appeal to a product. I have

    chosen to show the contrast

    between Light and Dark. This

allows my product a variety of

options. Firstly it stands out so it will

appeal to those who seek out

    attention grabbing items. Secondly

the theme works well in a black and

white room, as the bright colors will

    certainly attract attention, while the

black and white side will certainly

allow the product the ability to blend

    in.

    ymbolism:

my design I decided to put some form ofmbolism in to attract more users. The

mbol in my design, is the colours of De

ijl. Black, White, Yellow, Blue and Red. This

mbol is conveniently placed on the top of

e triangle so that it stands out. This allows

y product to be more attractive and it allows

otential buyers to recognize the symbolism,

nd potential patrons of De Stijl, may be

    tracted to my product.

    riangle Body:

he Body of the Triangle is thick, and prevents it from falling down easily. Drawbacks to this are that it

quires a large amount of materials. Another good point, is that the triangle can be placed in a

ultitude of ways, as it can be placed either upright or on its side. This allows the user convenience

hen adapting my product to his/her requirements.

The design that I have chosen is Design number 1. Firstly out of all my designs, design

number 1 achieved the most points with 93. The closest design were Design 2 with 87

Points which shows that Design 1 is the best design. Design 1 is also the most creative

and most user friendly. This is because firstly it appeals to the target market, as the use of

de stijl is very aesthetic and attractive, and was selected as the most appealing when

shown to users in my survey. The colours used cause users to be intrigued and when

users are intrigued they tend to want to buy items, to test them out. Also the fact that my

current design can be improved easily, allows me to create a better product without the

complications. Design 1 also protects the Ipod/Phone well, as it protects it from potential

spills as it has a protective cover. The main reason that I chose this design was mostly

because of the fact that it looked the best and was the most practical. In modern times themost aesthetic and practical tend to sell and I designed my product around these two

principles. Design Number 1 is the best because of the above reasons, and also because I

personally like this design the most, and if I did not like this design, I would not have my

heart set into working and improving my product.

Developing Ideas -Using models, mock-ups, sketches and/or 3D software, develop (improve) your idea

into a more complete design proposal. During this stage you should explore all the

design possibilities of your chosen design. Sketch all aspects of your product and make

a final comparison to your specifications.

Adding Musical Items to make my product more aesthetically pleasing and

interesting, and to allow it to appeal to the target market.

    Christopher Woodhead 10.6

At the very front of the object I will add a picture of musical notes to signify that this is a Music

Holder. The Musical Notes will allow my product to be more attractive and more appealing

On the front of the object I will add the

    earth wearing headphones to symbolize

that the entire earth listens to music. I will

also make it so that the object gets larger

    and larger, making potential customers

more intrigued to buy my product.

Redesigning Earphone and Charger Compartments to be less Bulky, and more

    stylish.

Redesigning Earphone and Charger Compartments to allow them to move, therefore

    giving the Ipod/Phone more space.

    Christopher Woodhead 10.6

I changed my Earphone and Charger compartments to a far less bulky, and far more stylish

compartment. With the Square there is a large part that is not put to use, however with my new

design more is put to space, and less material is wasted. This reduces my products impact on theenvironment. However the main reason I changed my design was to make the compartments far

more stylish, and more in tune with modern society, by making an interesting shape.

I changed my design so that I would have more space so that my design would work better. This

gives my Ipod more space, and allows my Ipod to be more comfortably placed without the user

encountering problems when trying to remove the Ipod, as there might not be in a room. This gives

me additional room for error. What I mean by additional room is that in case my dimensions are off,

it allows me to still continue on with my project. This also makes more interesting and widens my

target market as children would be attracted to this because when items can move in different

ways, children are generally interested. This design is very helpful as it increases space, whileattracting more buyers.

    Christopher Woodhead 10.6

    Christopher Woodhead 10.6

My Final Design, evaluated against my specifications gives me the same total grade of

93/100. My Final Design is improved in aesthetics as well as product safety, however my

ability to finish the work by June 9th is slightly elevated, due to the variety of changes that I

implemented above. Also the durability of the product is slightly less, as since the

earphone/charger compartments can move out of the main frame, which means that if a

certain amount of force is exerted, the compartments may fall off. Aesthetics are improved

because of the redesigned earphone/charger compartments. Product Safety is improved,

as my edges are now rounded and they are no longer pointy.
