2Q13Speculative Realism

Seit einigen Jahren befasst sich der britische Künstler Christopher Winter mit der menschli-chen Sehnsucht nach dem Übersinnlichen, seiner Besessenheit von der Schaffung von Illu-sionen und dem Drang nach Manipulation der Wirklichkeit.

Winter beschäftigt sich auch in seinen neuen Arbeiten, die er bei Lehr Zeitgenössische Kunst unter dem Titel 2Q13 Speculative Realism zeigt, mit verschiedenen Aspekten der Realität. Sie werden durch den Roman 1Q84 (phonetisch: 1984) des japanischen Schriftstellers Ha-ruki Murakami beeinflusst. 1Q84 spielt auf George Orwells Roman 1984 an. Murakami stellt jedoch im Gegensatz zu Orwell dar, wie das Jahr 1984 hätte sein und nicht, wie es hätte werden können. Murakami erschafft in 1Q84 eine Parallelwelt, einen Riss im Zeitgefüge, der eine alternative Gegenwart geschaffen hat. Seine Protagonisten entdecken nach und nach, dass sie nicht mehr im Tokyo des Jahres 1984 leben, sondern in dem des Jahres 1Q84.

Auch Winter erzeugt in seinen neuen Arbeiten eine zweite Wirklichkeit, mit der er den Betrachter konfrontiert. In den von erzählerischer Dichte gekennzeichneten Bildwelten ver-mischt sich das Vertraute mit dem Unbekannten, das Mögliche mit dem Rätselhaften, das Alltägliche mit dem Absurden. Artefakte, die erkennbar Teil der Realität sind, erhalten auf der Leinwand eine zweite Identität. So ist zum Beispiel das Gemälde Cubist Rabbit in der Ar-beit Speculative Realism (and the Cubist Rabbit) zu sehen. Daneben existiert es tatsächlich als eigenständiges physisches Werk und flankiert Winters Arbeit als Installation. Er erwei-tert damit den Bildraum und erkundet die Grenze zwischen Wirklichkeit und Illusion. Damit verweist Winter zugleich auf den philosophischen Ansatz der künstlerischen Stilrichtung des Kubismus, der eine alternative Realität zum Bekannten aufzeigen will. Der Untertitel der Ausstellung Speculative Realism wirft dabei mehr Fragen auf, als er beantwortet. Denn was ist mit einer Realität anzufangen, die sich im rein spekulativen Bereich befindet? Hier steht die Wirklichkeit, das Vorstellbare an der Schwelle zum Absurden, zur Fiktion; es ist das Zwielicht, in welchem Winters Arbeiten anzusiedeln sind.

Einen ähnlichen Ansatz verfolgt Winter in seinen Postcards from a Parallel World. Postkar-ten, deren Bestimmung die Suggestion eines realen Moments ist, transportieren zumeist jedoch immer auch eine Illusion. Winter spielt im Motiv mit Spiegelungen, in denen Andeu-tungen stecken, und die eine Parallelwelt vermuten lassen. Sie schaffen zugleich abstrakte Effekte, die an den Blick durch ein Kaleidoskop erinnern und die die figurative Darstellung irritieren.

For several years, the British artist Christopher Winter has dealt with the human yearning for the supernatural, his obsession with the creation of illusions and the urge to manipulate reality.

In his new work, which he is showing at Lehr Zeitgenössische Kunst under the title 2Q13 Speculative Realism, Winter also deals with different aspects of our reality. The works have been influenced by the novel 1Q84 (phonetically in Japanese: 1984) by the Japanese author Haruki Murakami. 1Q84 alludes to George Orwell‘s novel 1984. However, unlike Orwell, Murakami depicts the year 1984 as it could be and not as it will be. In 1Q84 Murakami crea-tes a parallel world, a tear in the fabric of time, which has created an alternative present. His protagonists gradually discover that they are no longer living in Tokyo in 1984, but in the year 1Q84.

Winter also confronts the viewer in his new work with a second reality. In the narrative intensity characterised by these visual worlds, the familiar mixes with the unknown, the probable with the puzzling, and the mundane with the absurd. Artefacts, which are part of recognizable reality, obtain a second identity on the canvas. For example, the painting Cubist Rabbit appears in the background of Speculative Realism (and the Cubist Rabbit). In addition, it actually exists as a separate physical work that flanks Winter’s painting as an installation. Through this he expands the visual space and explores the boundaries between reality and illusion. Thus Winter refers at the same time to the philosophical approach of the artistic style of Cubism, which aimed to show an alternative to the known reality. The subtitle of the exhibition Speculative Realism poses more questions than it answers. How can one begin with a reality that is purely in the speculative realm? Here reality is the ima-ginable on the verge of absurdity, of fiction; it is the twilight in which Winter locates his work.

A similar approach is used by Winter in his Postcards from a Parallel World. Postcards, who-se purpose is the suggestion of a real moment, portray almost always an illusion. Winter‘s playful mirror imaging of the motif subtly indicates a parallel world. It also creates abstract effects that resemble the view through a kaleidoscope and confound the figurative repre-sentation.
