High School Friday Frenzy—January 3

From the Desk of Fr. Mark

Hi, everyone. I hope the Advent journey has gone well for you. As for me, I keep looking at the road signs to see if I can find another sermon somewhere. I really did try to slow down, stop and yield so that my trip to Bethlehem would be more meaningful, more spiritual this year. Along the way, I found that sometimes I take my path rather than the right path. With that in mind, I picked a detour sign as the sign to get us to the manger this week. If you know me, I always run close to on time for ap-pointments. I may have to drive a bit faster to get to these appointments, but usually just make it. Every now and then I get frustrated by a road closed, a bridge out or con-struction sign, which blocks my journey. There are times I take the road right up to the broken bridge, believing my instincts rather than the initial detour sign. I have to turn around and lose time, rather than believing in the de-tour on my journey. I think of Mary and Joseph and their journeys of faith to the manger. Talk about detours! Who would believe the change of their life journeys. Yet they walked accord-ing to the steps of God. That detour had to take lots of trust when others must have told them to find a safe route, a familiar route. Maybe this is the Christmas to try something new. It may be a year to try a detour to the manger. We hear of the wise men going back home by another route, a de-tour. It may be time to detour from the old and try a new kind of journey. Examples may be to talk about Jesus, rather than Santa, around the children. A different route may be to go to a daily Mass, rather than a quick stop at a store. Instead of an extra present, give a gift to a favorite charity. Instead of singing “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer,” a more spiritual song could take its place. There are many detours to take in this last week before Christmas. May the final steps draw us closer to a baby in a manger. Have a blessed week, everyone. See you soon.
