Cuncti simus is from the Llibre Vermell (literally Translated: Red Book), one of the most important collections of Spanish medieval music. This manuscript is housed at the Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat, also the home of the sacred shrine of the Black Virgin, a popular destination for medieval pilgrimages. Many of the songs and dances found in the Llibre Vernell were performed by the pilgrims during their vigils of the Virgin’s shrine. This anonymous piece is edited by Ricardo Soto.

Ricardo Soto, D.M.A., is on the music faculty of California State University, Fullerton where he directs the Men’s Chorus and teaches a course on the music of Mexico. In 1999 he directed the university’s production of the Mozart’s Magic Flute in seven sold out performances. Ricardo Soto enjoys many opportunities to work as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator for honor choirs and master classes throughout the California. In 2000 he made his debut at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in a production of Menotti’s opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors in three sold-out performances. Dr. Soto has conducted at the Oregon Bach Festival, studying with the eminent Bach scholar, Helmut Rilling. He received his doctorate in Conducting from the University of Southern California in 1993, graduating magnum cum laude and receiving the Department Award for Excellence. Master’s and bachelor’s degrees were received from California State University, Fullerton.

O Magnum Mysterium is a responsorial chant from the Matins of Christmas in the Catholic Church. A number of composers have reworked the chant into a contemporary setting; the settings by Byrd, Victoria, de Cristo, Stadlmayr, Gabrieli, Palestrina, Poulenc, La Rocca, Pierre Villette, Morales, Lauridsen, and Busto, are notable. The BAC is presenting performances of several of these settings.

Johann Stadlmayr (c. 1575-1648) This German composer, born in Bavaria, died in Innsbruck. In 1603 he was employed by Archbishop of Salzburg; in 1604 he became Kapellmeister there. He left for Innsbruck in 1607 to assume a similar position at the court of the Habsburg Archduke Maximilian II of the Tirol. Well known across Europe in his time, Stadlmayr was a prolific church composer, writing six books of Masses in up to sixteen parts and many other volumes of liturgical music. He showed a sure grasp of both the old-fashioned polyphonic and new concertato styles. This setting of the O Magnum Mysterium is a cappella in four voices and in A minor. The ABA form is mostly homophonic in texture.

D. Pedro de Cristo (c. 1545-1618)This Portuguese composer was born and died in Coimbra. In 1571 he took his vois at the Augustinian monastery of St. Cruz in Coimbra and studied with Francisco de Santa Maria. There are signs of Francisco’s influence in de Cristo’s music, including a fondness for narrow overall ranges (16 notes being typical), syllabic declamation in crotchets, and the simultaneous use of a cambiata figure in one part and passing notes in another. He was renowned for his skill at chansonetas and other spirited music he played on keyboard instruments, harp, flute and dulcian. De Cristo used predominantly imitative style, although homophony is the basic texture of his responsories and psalms. Among this musician’s hallmarks as a composer was a fondness for sequence (both melodic and harmonic).

Thomas Luis de Victoria (1548-1611)What a great mystery, cries the text, that the lowly animals may view the Messiah born in a manger and the blessed Virgin who bore Him. The opening, long-breathed and reverential duet, of the most famous motet of the entire sixteenth century by the young Spanish composer, Tomas Luis de Victoria moves into a suave series of imitative passages, concluding with the text “laid in a manger.” For the exclamation “O beata Virgo”

(“O Blessed Virgin!”), a general pause sets up a hushed and mystical passage of homophony: the outer voices move in parallel, with relative immobility in the center blurring the rhythmic lines. This passage proved too extraordinary to feature at all in the mass which Victoria based upon this motet, though he did quote the gesture in a later motet, Vere languores. Two jubilant “Alleluia” sections (one in a dance-like triple time) close the motet and suggest necessary revision of the popular image of Victoria as merely a pale, brooding kind of Catholic.

“Those who study,

perform and enjoy

choral music, form a very

special community!”

The Austin Honor Choir is an auditioned group of 4th and 5th graders. Carol Colvin continued the tradition of the Austin Choral program from the former music teacher, Carolyn Fletcher. These students are chosen because of their excellent behavior and their ability to sing in tune with others. She feels the choir is an extension of her regular music class for those students who are ready to begin part singing. Several students throughout Carol Colvin’s tenure at Austin have been selected to sing with

the Texas Choral Directors State Children’s Choir. The Austin Honor Choir sings at two PTO programs a year, takes a tour in December to sings for local businesses and hospitals, has been asked to sing for local groups such as the Kiwanis, Rotary and Retired Teachers and has sung the National Anthem at one of the Lee College basketball games. The choir ends their year by singing for the Pride of Texas Music Festival. Ms. Colvin wants students to remember that music is a gift to be shared.

Priscilla Ennis & Beth DennardFor their support of our two music

scholarships for High School Seniors!

Applicants can find information and application forms on www.bayareachorus.org

for these scholarships.

All of the applicants will be auditioning in a concert format on February 9, 2014 with two contrasting songs that show their vocal talent.

The Bay Area Chorus will perform as the judges make their decision.

The deadline for entries is January 16, 2014.

Don’t miss out on these $1000 scholarships!

One of Houston’s oldest non-profit choral groups, the Bay Area Chorus has brought heartfelt performances to Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast since 1965. Long before the population of the Houston metroplex expanded to the shores of Clear Lake, this thriving choral group had already built a following among local residents and in surrounding communities.

More than 60 singers bring unique interests, ethnicity and cultural experiences to the group and represent a variety of professions as diverse as Houston itself. In addition to performing choral masterworks, this all-volunteer chorus also programs traditional holiday music, historic and contemporary classical choral music, spirituals, folk songs from around the world and Broadway favorites. Continuing growth in enrollment resulted in the formation of the Bay Area Women’s Chorus in the fall of 2009. The Women’s Chorus performs at all season concerts and had the honor of presenting a concert at the 56th Annual Convention of the Texas Choral Directors Association Convention in San Antonio in July, 2011. Recent guest artists for BAC concerts have included Dr. John Lienhard, founder of KUHF’s The Engines of Our Ingenuity, legendary

composer/arranger Alice Parker, com-poser/song leader Nick Page and Houston gospel recording artist Barbara Johnson Tucker with pianist Phillip Hall. The Bay Area Chorus appears on the DVD Weston Noble: Perpetual Inspiration, distributed internationally by the Hal Leonard Corporation.

The BAC Women’s Chorus is on hold while our Artistic Director Keith Dixon is teaching in Louisana at LSU this year. The Bay Area Chorus is rehearsing with Robert Phillips Jr. and will have Keith Dixon returning to conduct most of the concerts. BAC is looking forward to celebrating their 50th Anniversary in the Spring of 2015.

Carol BarwickSixteen years of singing with the Bay Area Chorus made Carol Barwick a staunch supporter of this outstanding community chorus. After retiring from 30 years as a public school choral music teacher, she began working to make the dream of establishing a Bay Area children’s chorus a reality. With the support of the Bay Area Chorus, the Bay Area Youth Singers began rehearsals and performances in the spring of 2008. Carol serves as the volunteer executive director of this music education organization. Carol is also the founder and director of the Summer Music Camp for elementary and middle school students, co-sponsored by the Bay Area Youth Singers, Bay Area Chorus, and University Baptist Church. She maintains an independent piano studio and is a frequent accompanist in the Clear Lake area. Her second career as owner/president of B & B Steel Products (a small manufacturing company) began in 2005. Carol hopes that her experiences as a musician and businesswoman help her serve effectively on the advisory board of the Bay Area Chorus.

Linda FletcherLinda Fletcher is the Director of Fine Arts for the Pasadena Independent School District. She has devoted 35 years to music education, teaching elementary music and intermediate and high school choral music. Linda received her Bachelor of Music Education with vocal emphasis from Sam Houston State University. She earned the Master of Science in Education Administration degree from the University of Houston/Clear Lake. Linda is an advocate for the arts in education and in all aspects of life.

Sam HarrisSam Harris is in his twenty-seventh year of public education as Director of Academic Enrichment and Fine Arts for the Galena Park Independent School District. Prior to assuming this position in 2000 he spent fifteen years as the choral director at North Shore High School. Sam received his Bachelor of Music

degree and his Master of Music degree from Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State University), in San Marcos, Texas. Under his leadership the North Shore High School Choral program grew from thirtyfive students to more than five hundred and twenty-five students winning multiple Sweepstakes each year at UIL Concert and Sight-reading Contest as well as trophies at regional and nation music competitions. In 1994 the North Shore Chorale was named “Grand Champion of Texas” in the American Classic Music Festivals and performed as a state honor choir at the 1996 Texas Music Educator Association State Convention. Mr. Harris brought this same commitment to excellence to his tenure as Director of Fine Arts as he supervises a 120 member staff in music, art, theater and dance and a budget just shy of one million dollars for the Arts education of 22,000 students. Even though every school in GPISD is a Title I campus with a population that is 70 percent economically disadvantaged and 78 percent Hispanic, GPISD Fine Arts organizations consistently out perform their more affluent suburban peers at UIL competitions. “The Arts are for everyone, not just those with the economic means to achieve according to conventional wisdom.”

Deborah KidwellDeborah Kidwell served public music education for 33 years. She holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Education degrees from the University of Houston. She taught all levels of orchestra in Goose Creek GCISD(Baytown) and Clear Creek ISD, and served as the Director of Visual and Performing Arts for Clear Creek prior to her retirement in 2007. Her orchestras won outstanding awards at UIL contest and in festivals in Dallas, Galveston, New Orleans, San Antonio and San Francisco.

The Texas Art Education Association awarded Deborah their Educator of the Year for Administration/ Supervision for 2007. Deborah is a past president of the Texas Orchestra Directors Association. She serves

She is an active church musician as a violinist and handbell player and directs an adult recorder group at her home church. Deborah is married to James Kidwell, also a retired orchestra director, and they have three married children and seven grandchildren. Deborah believes that the Bay Area Chorus is a vital and important part of the Bay Area community and wishes to support and promote the chorus in any way she can.

James KidwellJames Kidwell, a former public school orchestra director retired in 2004 after a total of 35 years in public music education at Clear Lake High School and other schools in Clear Creek ISD, Lubbock ISD and Carollton-Farmers Branch ISD. James is an active UIL and festival judge across the state and clinics orchestras throughout the Houston area.

Mr. Kidwell is active in the music program at Webster Presbyterian Church, playing in string ensembles, the recorder consort, and small hand bell ensemble. He has been the director of the adult hand bell choir for the last 21 years. James is married to Deborah Kidwell, and has three married children, Chris, Kristina, and Kathryn. They also have seven grandchildren.
