Dade City Police Report

Jose Ramon Alicea Diaz, 48, of 37641 Church Ave., was arrested by Dade City police on Nov. 30 on charges of battery and robbery/no weapon. Alicea Diaz and the vic-tim were engaged in a verbal altercation regarding money that the victim allegedly had taken from Alicea Diaz. Ali-cea Diaz allegedly punched the victim in the face and de-manded that he remove his shoes and empty his pockets. After surrendering his shoes and a cell phone to Alicea Diaz, the victim returned to his apartment to notify law enforcement, at which time he was confronted and struck again by the suspect. Alicea Diaz was later apprehended and taken to the Pasco County jail.

Joshua Ryan Costine, 37, of Panasoffkee, was arrested by Dade City police on Nov. 30 on a charge of methamphetamine pos-session. Police encountered Costine dur-ing a traffic stop at Meridian Avenue and Ninth Street in reference to a red light violation. After the odor of mari-juana was detected, Costine stated that he did not have any hemp, nor did he

have a medical marijuana card, and that the unknown person he had given a ride to earlier must have had the drug. A search of the vehicle yielded a plastic baggie con-taining methamphetamine on top of the center console. Costine was taken to the Pasco County jail.

Devon Nicholas Wood, 26, of 31157 S.R. 52, San Antonio, was arrested by Dade City po-lice on Nov. 27 on four Pasco County warrants for violation of probation. R.B. Cox Will Have Benches For BuddiesA ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Dec. 20

at 2 p.m. at R.B. Cox Elementary School for Benches for Buddies that are being installed there.

The Pasco County School District was able to purchase 13 of the benches through a Systems of Care grant. In addition to Cox, benches will also be installed at Denham Oaks Elementary, Chasco Elementary, Bexley Elementary and New River Elementary schools.

The Buddy Bench is a simple idea to foster friendship. Children who are feeling emotional or lonely may sit on these benches as a clear signal to

others on the playground that they are in need of a social connection.

Students at the schools receiving the benches will receive instructions on how to respond when they see a peer sitting on the bench. When a school creates a visual signal that emotional and social connection is a priority in the community, it helps elementary students to prioritize social connections said a news release from Pasco County Schools.

Coe Elementary is located at 37615 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

House Fire ExtinguishedIt took Pasco County Fire Rescue about

20 minutes to put out a Thursday morning fire in a single family home in the 15000 block of 14th Street.

No one was injured in the fire that was

reported at about 6 a.m. The cause of the fire doesn’t appear

to be suspicious but is still under investigation, Pasco County Fire Rescue said.

New Apartments Hotly Debated

A divided Dade City Commission decided Tuesday to approve the first reading of two ordinances that may result in the construction of up to 61 new apartments on the city’s northwest side.

PJW Management LLC requested a small-scale comprehensive plan amendment and a zoning map amendment for a three-acre parcel at 36830 Blanton Road. PJW plans to build apartments on land that is currently zoned for 10.5 residential units per acre.

PJW will be able construct up to 20 multifamily units on the property if the ordinances are approved on a second and final reading in December.

Several residents of the Northeast Rural Pasco Protected Area voiced opposition to PWJ’s request. The property is adjacent to, but not within, the protected area established by Pasco County Commissioners several years ago.

Nancy Hazelwood, Carol Cruz and Dot Wood were among those opposing the apartments.

The entitlements for new housing lots Dade City already has would currently put more than 10,000 cars on Blanton Road, Hazelwood said. She also said there could be slum conditions in the area within 10 years if the apartments were not properly maintained.

“You are encouraging high development in the protected are,” Hazelwood said. The apartments will be south of but not beneficial to Pasco-Hernando State College because most of its students commute to campus, Hazelwood said. This means the majority of the people living in the apartments won’t be college students, Hazelwood concluded.

Cruz noted that anything new has to have a comprehensive plan or zoning amendment to come into a protected area.

Wood, who is Cruz’s sister, said the protected area should be remembered for its rolling hills and not for apartments.

Todd Vandeberg, who represented PJW at the meeting, said areas adjacent to the proposed apartments are prime for development.

He added residents of the area with whom he had spoke told him they were more comfortable with multifamily residential than commercial general that could allow drive-through restaurants and convenience/service stores such as Wawa.

“I’m not against development,” Commissioner Nicole Deese Newlon said prior to the vote. “I don’t know why, but I don’t see the value of this one,” Newlon said.

“I have concerns about the high density in this area,” Commissioner James Shive said. “I think we would need to be a little more conservative over there.

“Dade City needs growth,” Mayor Pro Tempore Eunice Penix said.

Commissioners should consider what is in the best interest of Dade City and its residents, Commissioner Scott Black said.

He noted the new apartments would not be subject to homestead exemption so their owners would have to pay more in city property taxes.

There was an awkward moment when Mayor Camille Hernandez asked what was the pleasure of the commission. No one moved to grant PJW’s request.

City Attorney Thomas Thanus said the commission should then consider a motion to deny PJW’s request. That failed by a 3-2 vote with Hernandez, Black and Penix voting against it and Newlon and Shive voting for it.

Hernandez initially thought that meant PJW’s request had been approved.

Thanus told her the commission would have to considerer a motion to approve the request, which they did by a vote of 3-2. Hernandez, Black and Penix voted for it and Newlon and Shive voted against it.

Commissioners also agreed to hold a special meeting next Tuesday to discuss the impact the downtown stormwater improvement project is having on local merchants along with its anticipated impact on the 2020 Kumquat Festival that will be held on Jan. 25.

Parade Another SuccessTo the Editor:

The Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all the citizen volunteers who came together on Friday to produce the Magical Night Christmas Parade in downtown Dade City.

Special thanks to Harold Sample and Joey Wubbena for arranging for volunteers, organizing the lineup, providing safety inspections and helping any and all with the event.

The parade could not happen without the enthusiastic support of Police Chief James Walters, Lieutenant Bill Rowe, City Manager Leslie Porter,

the City Commissioners and all the city staff.

Thanks as well to all the organizations and businesses that showed their holiday spirit and creativity with the wonderful floats, bands and marching units.

An estimated 5,000 attendees enjoyed the 50 parade entries and the beautiful seasonal decorations that lit up our downtown.

Please remember the wonderful “Church Street Christmas” on Dec. 21, 22, 23. Come out and enjoy.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

John Moors, Executive DirectorGreater Dade City Chamber of Commerce

Letter To The Editor...

In other matters, Sarah Parker and Andrew Ahearn made a presentation on Special Olympics in Pasco County. More than 1,500 athletes of all ages and with varying degrees of disability participate in numerous sports activities. They are matched up with competitors who have similar skills so one athlete isn’t overmatched with other competitors, Parker said.

Parker was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, a high level of autism, when she was four years old. Parker attended special needs classes early on but eventually transitioned to regular school classes. She recently graduated

from high school and plans to pursue a master’s degree in communication so she can be an advocate for Special Olympics.

Ahearn has participated in Special Olympics at the local, state and national levels. He enjoys running. He was diagnosed with autism when he was 13 years old and said he is thankful for the teachers who have worked with him over the past few years. He credited his late father with getting him involved in Special Olympics and having an attitude of never giving up.

Also. Steven A. Brown presented Jeanie Germain with an angel in memory of his mother, Jeanette Brown, who died Nov. 6 at Gulfside Hospice. She was 85.

Funes won the 50/50 drawing.

Chelsea Waller, president of the Rotary Club of Dade City, accepts some Zephyrhills Bottled Water from Manny Funes, president of the Zephyrhills Rotary Club, following Pasco High School’s recent victory over Zephyrhills High School in the 9 Mile War.

Many of the people attending the Christmas Stroll gazed at decorations that had been hung along the main thoroughfare.

“This is a great event for Dade City,” said Commissioner James Shive. “It took four weeks, working seven days a week, to get the decorations set up.”

The sidewalks on the west side of Seventh Street were packed with pedestrians who were making their way to and from stores. Several people also sat on benches along

the sidewalks.People of all ages strolled up and down Seventh Street.

Some of them were pushing baby strollers and others were pushing people while they rode in wheelchairs.

The event put on by the Downtown Merchants Association was truly one filled with Christmas cheer.

“It reminded me of Strolls of old,” said Margaret Angell, president of the merchants association. The group is going to meet Friday to do a recap of the 2019 Christmas Stroll and begin making plans for next year, Angell said.

Holiday Events In Full Swing

Dade City officially kicked off the Christmas season with a weekend full of holiday activities, beginning with the annual Christmas parade on Friday evening.

Starting at 7 p.m., police cruisers led a caravan of musicians, dancers, and brightly shining floats assembled by local businesses, clubs and organizations up Seventh Street as excited families flocked both sides of the street.

Many in attendance were celebrating the return of one of their favorite annual holiday event, but this year’s parade was a first for some. Parade newcomer Pamela Decius, a Wesley Chapel resident and professor at Saint Leo University, attended the parade along with friends and family and was absolutely wowed.

“One of the theater students mentioned the parade to me in passing and I realized that I had never been to it,” Decius said. “I thought it would be a great start to the winter break.”

Some of this year’s most memorable highlights included the Pasco County Fair Association’s float, which featured a luminescent hot air balloon, East Pasco Gymnastics’ flipping and tumbling elves, and the

Pasco Sheriff’s Department’s horses dressed in dapper Christmas attire.

An appearance from Santa Claus himself cruising up Seventh Street in pitch black Mustang convertible closed wrapped up the magical evening and signified that more were on the way. A number of activities are fast approaching, including Church Street Christmas on Dec.

21-23. “After seeing the parade, I am definitely interested in

attending the Church Street event and others. I love to support local businesses and artisans in the community,” said Decius. “I definitely got the ‘hometown’ feeling from the parade. That neighborly vibe, there’s just no better feeling.”

Students from Blackwood Dance Studio twirled, tapped, and pranced up Seventh Street.

Attendees of all ages were getting into the holiday spirit waiting for Santa Claus to arrive.

Members of the Pasco High School marching band blinked a bright red and green as they marched along. Even the Pasco Sheriff’s horses were dressed up in their holiday best.

Santa Claus arrived in style. Not in a cherry red sleigh, but a midnight black Mustang convertible.

Thousands Raised For Thomas Promise

The clubhouse at Spanish Trails West was filled to capacity on Dec. 6 when the fourth annual breakfast was held to benefit the Thomas Promise.

The fundraising event was quite successful, said Tom Pete, one of its organizers.

A massive pile of new unwrapped toys was placed under the Christmas tree in the clubhouse. They were all donated to the Thomas Promise so children could have a more joyful Christmas.

Those attending enjoyed a nourishing breakfast of pancakes and sausage patties. They had their choices of coffee, tea, and hot cocoa or orange juice to wash down their savory meals.

A group of men who dine regularly at the Golden Corral were surprised when Pete presented them with some ice cream for dessert.

A trio of singers and musicians provided entertainment. Two of the men were from Canada and the other was from Illinois. They made good harmony together and one of the men occasionally told a joke to keep the atmosphere festive.

Jim Nutter, who lives at Spanish Trails

West, made his annual appearance as a shorts-wearing St. Nicholas.

When asked if he wanted to give out presents, he said “No, but I will do it anyway.”

He then tossed candy on tables as he scampered past them in the crowded room.

Ann Babbitt of East Pasco Meals on Wheels gave a brief presentation regarding the nonprofit organization that feeds more than 150 elderly people daily in Zephyrhills and the surrounding area.

Spanish Trails West donated more than $250 from a 50/60 drawing to Babbitt for the benefit of Meals on Wheels.

She was surprised when one of her tickets for the 50/50 was worth $75 and she also donated that money to Meals on Wheels.

The Thomas Promise is a 501 © 3 nonprofit organization that was formed about eight years ago after Chelsea Thomas, the daughter of Wade and Diana Thomas, began asking her parents for more money for school meals.

She told them she had been using the money they had given her to buy breakfasts for children who didn’t have any money.

Fast-forward eight years and the

Thomas Promise is now providing food bags to more than 1,500 students throughout Pasco County schools. Each bag contains six meals, which is enough

food to nourish them during the weekend before they return to school each week.

The Thomas Promise has donated more than 144,000 bags of food this year.
