I would like to extend my appreciation to every member of the Holy Family High School alumni community who supported us during our Tree and Wreath fundraiser or on Colorado Gives Day. We had record setting support at both events! Whether you are an alum from the North Denver campus or whether you graduated from the current campus in Broomfield, your contribution is appreciated. The generosity of our alumni makes it possible to maintain a high quality of programming at HFHS. Our retreats, mission trips, academics and extracurricular are all prospering because of your support. Thank you for everything you do and thank you for being part of the Tiger “Family”!

The next week is an opportunity to celebrate the birth of our savior and the joy and hope he brought to the entire world. In the midst of our feasting and gift-giving it is essential to remember that we are not celebrating something seasonal, secular, and vague. We are celebrating the birth of Christ and the possibility of salvation that

came with him. I know I speak for the entire Holy Family community when I say that we are grateful for this above all other things.

One of the greatest thrills of working or attending a Catholic school is the ability to say what you really feel at this time of year.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Pax Christi,

Matt Hauptly

The Holy Family Community lost one of its prime architects, mov-ers, shakers, and supporters, when Rich Haber, former Principal, pho-tographer, substitute teacher, and face of the community, lost his on-going battle with many health re-lated issues. Rich was 72 years old. Before Rich was first introduced to the HF community in North Denver, in the late 60s as a student teacher, he had served in the US Air Force, earned degrees from Regis College and the University of San Francisco. He had overcome a great deal of tragedy in his younger days, as he was raised in chil-dren’s homes, and lost both his wife and daughter to untimely deaths. In 1984, he became the Principal at Holy Family. He served in this role for five years. He then went on to teach at at Marian High School in San Diego. He returned to Colorado to teach at Mullen School. He returned to HFHS after retirement to take on the his new roles as a substitute teacher and school photographer.

Early in his tenure as Principal, Holy Family was suffering from declining enrollment, financial instability, and a declining reputation in terms of academic and behavioral standards. However, during his administration improvements to the school included a new library, gym floor, conces-sion stand, shades and movie screens in every classroom and improved heating and security systems. Haber was also instrumental in slowing

the enrollment decline, and in pointing the school in the right direction in terms of higher standards of behavior and academic growth. The school survived its financial cri-sis, increasing its enrollment ultimately lead-ing to the growth and move to Broomfield.

Rich stated in 1989, as he left HFHS for California, “I will be watching Holy Fam-ily from California. HF is a part of me and I’m a part of HF; I always will be and always have been, since I started teach-ing here in 1969. It was my first teaching experience, but I was never able to forget

Holy Family High School because it made such an impact on my life.”

The Class of 1965 celebrated its 50th reunion on July 31, August 1 and 2, 2015. Activities included a cocktail par-ty and dinner on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, the graduates attended their Golden Diploma mass and cer-emony at Holy Family High School’s Broomfield campus. After the mass which was officiated by Father Marty Lally, ‘68 those in attendance received a golden diploma from HFHS Assistant Principal, Mike G. Gabriel and Principal Matt Hauptly. Following the ceremo-ny, they enjoyed a beautiful brunch prepared by the school’s cafeteria manager, Vicki Burke. Although there were few who attended, the 45th reunion for the Class of 1970, those who did had a great time at the

HFHS homecoming chili supper and football game. Teri (Boetcher) Dal-bec took the lead in getting the class together to be a few among the 300 who attended the chili supper prepared by Patty Gabriel. Attendees at the dinner included Teri, Patty, Vicki Allen Eakins, Kay Beard Simpson, Joannie Ziska, Cathy Chergo, Dave Robinson, and Mike Flynn. Following the game the group met at a local brewery where they were joined by Leanne Collins Ditirro, her husband Danny and Mike Gabriel. Leanne had been in contact with Anna Amato who lives in Italy so all enjoyed a few minutes of face time with Anna.

Members of the Class of 1975 celebrated their 40th class reunion this summer with a backyard gathering at Tony and Dar Garba-

rino’s home. Thirty members of the class attended the gathering along with some of their family members. They enjoyed a casual evening in a beautiful setting. A great time was had by all. Special thanks to Cheryl Au-gust-Sanellli, Rita Dunnebecke-Brown, Dar Garbarino, Sheryl Hunt, Delia Mcllree-Prezkuta, Teresa Piro-Immel, Doug Richards and Joe Somma for finding classmates and helping with the event. Plans are underway for their next reunion.

1975

1970It's hard to believe, but one by one the HF Classmates of 1963

turned 70 years old this year! As is the tra-dition of their "Zero Birthday Club", they celebrated their new decade together in September. This time they invaded Duran-go, CO. Thanks to the invitation and careful planning of Stan and Mary Dunlap, they hit every bar, restaurant and happy hour pos-sible in downtown Durango, culminating with a delicious farewell brunch at Dunlaps before heading back to Denver. They also experienced the fantastic train ride from Durango to Silverton, tried some pickleball, and added some wonderful memories and fun times with special people in their lives. The classmates celebrated their 60th in Lake Tahoe, CA, 70th in Durango and at this writing Ed Malenk, President of "Zero Birth-day Club", is researching details on visiting the healing waters and miracles in Lourdes, France for their 80th! Watch for details....

On July 6, 2015 Tony Garbarino, ‘75, forwarded an e-mail to his classmates that he had received from a gentleman who lives on Raleigh St. in north Denver. The man had asked Tony for help in locating the owner of an HFHS class ring which he found in the yard of his house.

He had been landscaping his yard, clearing the top three inches of dirt and putting it into piles. A major rain storm struck, washing the dirt down the gutter. The next day while cleaning up the mess, he found a 1975 HFHS class ring with the initials “LS” on it.

His family purchased the house on Raleigh in 1992 from a family with the last name Smith. It seemed possible to him that one of them may have graduated in 1975. The father of the Smith family worked for the Denver Fire De-partment.

Tony received a message from classmate, Joe Somma, ‘75 who with the help of these clues, had solved the mys-tery announcing that the name of the owner is Lauren “Bill” Smith. Bill and the ring were reunited this summer.

The Holy Family High School Alumni Association hosted the 10th Annual Holy Family Bocce Tournament on Oc-tober 3. Over one hundred participants in teams of four-competed at the Sons Of Italy Lodge in Wheat Ridge for first and second place cash prizes. The participants en-joyed breakfast which was donated by Chick-fil-a. Clyde’s Sausage donated sausage for lunch time sandwiches. Beer was provided by Matt Zarlengo, ‘93; wine and coffee were provided by Alumni Associatioin board members.

Under the watchful eyes of scorekeepers Matt and Mike, ‘17 Zeman, the field was narrowed down to the repeat winners, Team Louisville, Paul Lasnik, Lenny Volpone, Emiliano Ruscitti and Alberto Navara.

The funds raised will provide $500 scholarships for three HFHS students for the 2016-2017 academic year. Since the fall of 2012, the group has sponsored scholarships of $500 each year to five HFHS students with proceeds from its annual Bocce tournament.

Current scholarship winners are Gillian Ebersole, ‘16, Charley Scerbo, ‘16, son of Mary Wall Scerbo, ‘93; Mary Coufal, ‘18 and Sara Rode, ‘19, daughter of Christine Sturm Rode, ‘85.

As the need for scholarship funds increases, the group is looking for new ideas to fundraise. Young and new ideas are essential to the success of the Alumni Association.

The Association is searching for HFHS Alumni who are in-terested in becoming active members of the Association in the roles of committee members, board members and volunteers. Please consider making a contribution of your time and talent to this worthy cause.
