You might have seen these events in the news but I wanted to make sure we all were educated about what our court systems are voting about and the outcomes of these votes. The first was a decision handed down by the Supreme Court. In a 5-4 decision the Supreme Court upheld the authority of town officials to start their public meetings with a prayer. While this seems like a natural thing that would occur in our nation, it apparently was under debate to the point it went all the way to the Supreme Court. Another court decision on the docket of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts was whether the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance discriminated against atheists (those who don’t believe there is a God). The Court determined “under God” “reflects patriotic practice, not a religious one. While it is a breath of fresh air to see favorable votes which keep our religious freedoms intact, they are not completely in line with our Christian faith and our desire to see our country return to a complete dependence upon the Lord. Another decision that occurred was when a large denomination’s main financial organization decided it will not provide funds to groups who lobby against abortion, sexual orientation or guns and at the same time, it decided it would no longer support groups who were pushing for these same “social” changes. It decided that a more “neutral” position would be more in line with who they are. Is neutral the right place to be on such issues? Was Christ neutral? Is God neutral? In a challenging verse Jesus said, “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” (Matthew 10:34) Jesus’ message was never neutral and never popular with the masses. He stood for God and His righteousness and as His followers, we should do the same. Neutral is not an option. In much love, Pastor Darrel

Pastor’s Notes: I wanted to share a couple of news items that I think are relevant to our faith today. We pray for our family*…Father we thank you for our family. We are grateful for the people you have brought into our lives, especially those of our immediate family. Father, you have blessed each person in our family with unique gifts and talents. We ask that You continue to watch over our family. Guide us, protect us, and bring us closer to you so that we honor you in all that we say and do.

Starting on Mother’s Day FCC passed out baby bottles to fill with change in support of the Baby Bottle Project being sponsored by our local Kansans for Life group and endorsed by our local ministerial alliance. Kansans for Life’s mission statement is “to restore legal protection to innocent human life from conception to natural death.” A simpler way to word this is that they support Pro-life issues and help mothers and save babies. We’ll be collecting money between now and Father’s Day for this very worthy cause. If you would like to have a baby bottle you may pick one up at church during office hours. Thank you for helping to protect life. Mary Hamilton (a member of our local And. Co. Kansans for Life.

MUSIC AT THE LAKE! It's probably been a loooong time since any of us has had the opportunity to attend a good old fashioned gospel tent meeting! Well, here's our chance...and it's even being held outside! The Ming Family Gospel Music group from Topeka will be in Garnett at the SOUTH LAKE. Perhaps you heard them at Square Fair. Check the following dates, bring a lawn chair and invite family and friends as well! See Marilyn if you'd like a ride.

Friday, June 6th at 7 PM ~ Saturday, June 7th at 1:30 and 7 PM ~ Sunday, June 8th at 6 PM

SPONSOR A CHILD TO CAMP! God has blessed us with a group of students who way exceed anything we have had for many years. Last year we took 69 students to HHCC; making FCC the largest student sending church of 42 churches. With the cost of camp rising each year many students are faced with the burden of a price they cannot afford. Thankfully FCC covers the cost for every student who wants to attend. The Finance Committee and Church Board have asked me to get some help with the camp bill! If there are people who would be willing to sponsor a student to camp, it would be greatly appreciated. The cost of camp for: Overnighter (1-2nd Grade)-$35, Get Acquainted (3rd Grade) - $50.00, Junior 2 (4th-6th Grade) - $110.00, Junior High 2 (6th -9th Grade) - $125.00, High School (9th-12th Grade) - $125.00. This is a ministry that will change our students’ lives for Jesus sake! Please support this hugely valuable ministry. Blessings, FCC Board
