Fancy a break? What about a digital Sabbath?Holidays are the best time of year – whenever they fall! They’re what we all look forward to and plan our lives around. In the busiest of busy moments, the call of a break can be more enticing than you had ever imagined, but that’s because of the way we’re wired.
Rest is an essential com-ponent in keeping humans going and it’s central to God’s relationship with his chosen people – think Sabbath. In our increasingly ‘plugged in’ age, unplug-ging can feel like a fate worse than death: after all, if you haven’t tweeted a photo of the sun and the sea, people won’t be wit-
nessing your beach bonanza and it won’t be real!
If you’re really going to rest, though, maybe you need to forget ‘virtual’ and ‘embrace’ reality. There’s a new trend among certain holiday destinations – mainly farms that want to help you reconnect with nature and super-luxury hotels – to advertise the fact that they don’t have Wi-Fi.
If this seems odd to you, you could perhaps be one of the growing masses that might like to try a digital Sabbath this holiday. Turn the phone off and make memories that you store in your head and heart rather than on your hard drive.

Finding the journey brain numbing? Try these ideasAre we there yet? The four most annoying words in the English language – or any other language for that mat-ter! When you’ve been on the road a matter of minutes and your destination still feels as remote as it did leaving your house it’s the last thing parents want to hear.
So, how do you keep the kids entertained? Like many things in life, it all starts with good planning. Adequate snack provision is essential – though it’s probably worth limiting liquids if you’d rather avoid toilet breaks, and you should make sure to keep the sugar count down.
After that, why not think
about investing in some good audio books. There are plenty aimed at all ages, and they’re a lot less mind-numbing than some of the repetitive, drivelly songs that your dear darlings like to hear again and again and again and… so on.
Colouring books, real books and toys will all go some way to keeping the peace – as will a port-able DVD player/ laptop if you’re desperate. Tablets fully charged and loaded with games can be a great distraction, especially if kids aren’t used to getting uninterrupted ‘screen time’, so turn a journey into a treat with that tactic!
