Four Great Reasonswhy your child should try out a Chris-tian holiday or festival this year…

There are four good reasons why your child should try out a Christian holiday or festival this year, says

Jim Hammett, Chief Executive of CCI, the Christian holiday association

It’s a chance to be with their peersFaith and fun are absorbed by sharing with others

of their own age. Th e chance to discuss issues that you wouldn’t do with your parents! Th e opportunity for ‘late into the night’ debates where faith is owned and honed. It’s informal and, by and large, the young people them-selves set the agenda.

It’s learning by doing Young people enjoy the experiential learning style

of residential events. Whether that’s team skills as they struggle to put up the tent in the dark that should have gone up earlier in the day, or, perhaps, by trying the climb-ing tower that they never dreamed they would have the faith to scale. Th ey are living and learning in a dynamic, active environment.

It’s a chance to be outdoorsIt’s not surprising that Jesus used the outdoors to

convey spiritual truth so many times during his minis-try on earth. We are just that bit closer to listening to the Creator when we are in among his creation. Looking at the stars, late one evening, gets life into perspective. Away from the urban jungle, the frenetic pace of school life and (in most cases) the technology dependent culture – gives space for living with a new perspective. (There are still opportunities to go to computer holidays if life with-out a terminal is just too much!)

It’s a contemporary demonstration of the gospelCamps, holidays and festivals are a 21st century way

to demonstrate the Christian faith. You see it, experience it, breath it, live it out, rub shoulders with adult help-ers that have time to engage in debate, answer questions and pray. It’s also fun, in a world dominated by tests and exam results, pressures of time and achievement…it’s fun to just ‘be’.

All’s Well ?Holidays don’t always work out as hoped, as our reporter James Hastings found out on a trip to Canterbury

I never expected to end up in a police cell following a visit to two of the holiest places in the country. After drinking at a well named in honour of a certain

saint (I will spare her heavenly blushes) I staggered into Canterbury Accident & Emergency.

‘Have you drunk untreated water?’ wheezed the doctor. ‘It’s given you a kidney infection.’

Not wanting to grass on the divine lady and her obvi-ously putrid well, I blamed it on too much of the local brew. ‘You’re a bit old for that 18-30 holiday caper,’ sneered Dr Death.

He handed me a prescription then told me my bed was needed. So, at ten minutes to midnight, I hobbled into the nearby police station. I explained to the desk sergeant that I couldn’t get a train until 10am the following morning.

‘May I have a cell for the night?’ I pleaded.Hearing my thick Glasgow accent, he smiled, ‘You’re

a long way from home.’I wanted to growl like a true East End hard man. In

truth, I just wanted my mummy. After taking my details and my shoelaces, he led me to a cell. A mattress was the only thing not made of concrete. Or maybe it was.

Prison campaigners often say that boredom and loss of liberty are the worst injustices about being inside. I believe it’s using a toilet while a police officer stands guard two feet away. I’m sure it was no picnic for him either.

I lay on my mattress, thinking about the ancient pil-grims to Canterbury. How they braved highwaymen, disease and unknown roads. I thanked God I was still alive, if not exactly kicking. I thanked him for the kind officer who phoned my wife to say I was fine. I thanked him for the cup of tea he brought me.

A message on the cell wall above me read: ‘Bob was here.’ I wondered where Bob was now. I dreamt we were both working at a certain saint’s well, putting up ‘Elf ‘n’ Safety’ notices which read: ‘No photography. Mind the step. Don’t drink the water.’

HOLIDAYFELLOWSHIP‘I foundGod in aCaravanPark!’Barrie Townsend spent a quarter of a century wonder-

ing whether God existed - and then found him on a holiday caravan site. Th e former motor trade executive had his fi rst encounter with Christianity as a 15-year-old schoolboy. But it was only in his early 40s, that Barrie fi nally gave his heart to Jesus during a wet weekend at a caravan park full of holidaymakers.

In fact, he felt such a relief at fi nally coming to faith, that he made a round trip of 108 miles just to attend a Sunday church service.

‘More than anything, when I became a Christian, I felt a tremendous sense of relief,’ says Barrie. ‘For years, God had been calling me and while I had not really resisted, I suppose you could say I didn’t respond very well.’

From an early age, Barrie, from Kent, had an interest in the motor trade. Working his way up the corporate ladder, he held a number of senior executive posts in his 45 years service in the industry. Like many people, he attended church as a youngster, but it seemed distant from his real life of schoolwork then raising a family and building a career.

It was when Barrie and wife Marie took up caravan-ning, that God fi nally broke through. Th e couple had moved to Devon and most weekends, travelled around the South West. At a camp in the Quantock Hills, they met a Christian couple and became instant friends.

‘It wasn’t so much what they said, it was more how they treated us,’ says Barrie. ‘Th ey couldn’t do enough to help us. Th eir attitude was one of unconditional love and it was genu-ine, not just for show. I went to their church and the sheer joy just overwhelmed me. In fact, I loved the service so much, we would drive up from Devon every week just to attend – a journey of some 100 miles.’

Now he has retired, Barrie has no time to spend on the golf course. He has founded a new company with an emphasis on profi t performance.

FORMER student Beth Tash is returning to the nightclubs she used to dance in – to tell club-bers about Jesus.Beth, 27, has been appointed ‘pioneer min-ister to the night time economy’ by churches in Leeds. Former club-ber Beth has lived in the city for nine years but scrapped boozing when she became a believer.

She said: “Everyone that is out and about at night is loved by God but doesn’t know it yet. “I’ve seen the change in my life brought about by knowing that God loves me, and that ’s what I want for other people.

“I want them to know that they are loved by an

incredible God who will-never let them down. We can have a relationship with him by following Jesus – and he can turn our lives around.”Beth’s role involves talking to staff in clubs and bars, building up links with city centre churches and bringing a “message of life and a mission of love” to revellers.

A r c h d e a c o n o f Leeds Peter Burrows, who helped create the role, said: “If you go into Leeds on any Friday or Saturday night and see the huge number of young people coming into the city, it is obvi-ous that the Church isn’t engaging with the club culture.”

Healing miracle left me up Tempo!

TOP rap artist MC Tempo loved music so much it made him go deaf. But a miracle healing not only gave him back his hearing – it also saved him from suicide.MC – real name Mark Edwards – is one of Eu-rope’s budding hip-hop stars. He is a regular on Radio 1 and has played along-side Judge Jules and Tim Westwood. However, the Brighton-based artist became deaf in his left ear after an il-legal rave. It was the low point of a downward spiral, which began with MC’s parents splitting up when he was 11. He was thrown out ● Continued on Page 2
