FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Term 2 Week 7

This Sunday is the feast of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.

After a number of recent liturgical feasts; Easter, Pentecost, Trinity Sunday we have another on this Sunday – the Feast of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. This feast originated in Belgium in the 13th Century and spread to the worldwide church. It used to be known by its Latin name, Corpus Christi. This feast reminds us of Jesus’ parting gift of himself in the form of the bread and wine as described at the last supper. This event is recounted in the Second Reading today from Paul’s first Letter to the Corinthians where he reminds the community members in Corinth that this action of sharing the bread and wine together is fundamental to their existence ‘Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup , you are proclaiming his death’. In the Gospel from John we hear of the miracle of Jesus feeding five thousand with five loaves and two fish. This story contains a powerful and clear message about the Body and Blood of Christ. The Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ is not only an event, it is an action designed to nourish those who receive it so that they can then go out into the world and serve. The final words of the Mass reflect this theology; ‘Go now to love and serve the Lord’

The Cold Coast Catholic Schools' Cross Country Carnival will be held at St Brigid’s on Wednesday June 1.

Assembly prayer this week was led by 2C whilst 2B will lead next week’s.

PB4L Focus

This week we will be expanding on Rule #1: Respect for Self and Others by focusing on transitions around the school other than the specific transitions we have focused on over the past fortnight. The one that a number of children need support with is transitioning from the playground to the classroom. If you can reinforce the expected behaviours that successfully allow children to transition from the playground to the classroom it would be most appreciated.

Thought for the week

"For all of the decisions young business leaders will be asked to make based on facts and figures, needs and wants, numbers and speculation, all of those choices will require one common skill: how to evaluate raw information, be it from people or a spreadsheet, and make reasoned and critical decisions. The ability to think clearly and critically - to understand what people mean rather than what they say - cannot be monetised, and in life should not be undervalued. In all the people who have worked for me over the years the ones who stood out the most were the people who were able to see beyond the facts and figures before them and understand what they mean in a larger context." Prayer on Assembly

Thank you to Mrs Purdon and the students in 2C for their prayers on assembly on Monday honouring the Holy Trinity. Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday after Pentecost.

Let us Pray

to the one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

that our lives may bear witness to our faith

Father,

you sent your Word

to bring us truth

and your Spirit to make us holy.

Through them we come to know

the mystery of your life.

Help us to worship you,

one God in three Persons,

by proclaiming and living our faith in you.

We ask you this, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

one God, true and living, forever and ever.

AMEN

Next week’s prayer will be led by 2B. Parents are always welcome to attend our assemblies which begin at 2.30pm.

National Sorry Day

We will honour National Sorry Day with a short prayer on assembly this Thursday. On this day, which is held on 26 May each year, we remember the mistreatment of our country's indigenous population. During the 20th century, policies of Australian governments resulted in Aboriginal children being separated, often forcibly, from their families. This day of remembrance is followed by National Reconciliation Week, which commences on 27 May, the day that marks the anniversary of the 1967 referendum that saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the national census.

Holy Father, God of Love, You are the Creator of this land and of all good things. We acknowledge the pain and shame of our history and the suffering of our peoples,

Page 5: Christi. This feast reminds us of Jesus’ parting gift of ... › news-events › Documents › ISSUE NO... · cancelled and resume on Monday 27th June. The Pauline Fathers from

and we ask your forgiveness. We thank you for the survival of indigenous cultures.

Our hope is in you because you gave your Son Jesus to reconcile the world to you. We pray for your strength and grace to forgive, accept and love one another, as you love us and forgive and accept us in the sacrifice of your Son.

Give us the courage to accept the realities of our history so that we may build a better future for our nation. Teach us to respect all cultures. Teach us to care for our land and waters. Help us to share justly the resources of this land. Help us to bring about spiritual and social change to improve the quality of life for all groups in our communities, especially the disadvantaged.

Help young people to find true dignity and self-esteem by your Spirit. May your power and love be the foundations on which we build our families, our communities and our nation, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

AMEN

Distict Cross Country

Last week 17 St Brigid's students competed in the Hinterland District Cross Country Carnival. All of our students were very competitive with the majority of our students finishing in the top 25 out approximately 50-60 competitors. I am very proud of our little team as we always have fun and achieve fantastic results despite our smaller school size. We had 30% of our team finish in the top 15 competitors, including 3 students who finished in the top 6. Blake B put in a determined effort to finish 6th, Jacinta D pushed herself round the track to place 4th, and Matthew L (MJ) snatched 1st place blitzing the field and finishing 200m ahead of his nearest competitor. These 3 students will now progress to the regional carnival at Runaway Bay in June. The St Brigid's community are very proud of them and we wish them all the best at the next stage of competition.

This week the children will be learning about the letter and sounds of Vv & Yy”. The Prep classes attended The Very Hungry Caterpillar show on Friday. The day began with a very excited bus ride. All of the children were absolutely captivated throughout the whole show. Other stories that the children were exposed to were “Mister Seahorse”, “The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse” and “The Very Lonely Firefly”. All of these books were written by Eric Carle. The teachers and staff were very impressed by the children’s behaviour. We all had a great time on our very first school excursion. We are continuing to focus on different books in each classroom. “Mrs Wishy Washy”, “Edward the Emu”, “Who Sank the Boat?” and “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” are some of the books that the children are exploring. Ask the children what they think of these stories. It is a good starting point for them to discuss what they are experiencing at school. In our Religion lessons we are continuing to work on God’s Creation. The message from this Bible story is “God loves us and had a plan: to Create the world for us, so that we could live in it and care for each other and His world. In Maths, the numbers beyond 10 are being investigated, with the focus being on number 12. The children will show different ways to represent number 12. We continue to find the 2D shapes and 3D objectsin our environment and discuss how they differ. The children are even noticing many different shapes and objects in their lunchbox!! In Visual Arts, our learning is about secondary colours. We are experimenting by mixing the two of the primary colours together and discovering the new colours are being made. St Brigid’s Book Week will be celebrated on Thursday, May 26th, with the children dressing up as their favourite book character. You are more than welcome to come along and support your child. It is a great morning. We are also looking forward to celebrating our Under 8’s Day. Additional information was sent home last week about this great day. Please check bags if you did not receive it, as we need numbers for catering.

We will continue sending the two “readers” home each week. Please try and make the time to read with, and listen to your child, as they develop a love of reading. These books will be exchanged each Wednesday.

As the middle of the year is approaching, we remind you that the Prep children need to practise their sight words regularly. It is important, as we would like to make sure all Prep children have as many opportunities as possible, to be independent readers upon entering Grade One.

Year 1 News

It’s all about stories this week! By the time this is published, we will have enjoyed our visit to the Gold Coast Arts Centre to see “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” The bus trip will also have been a first for many students. Now the teachers are planning our costumes for the Character Book Parade on Thursday. So it’s all about stories! This is great timing as we are into making up our own narratives in class.

In Maths, we are doing much testing and revision as it is report time coming up.

In science, we are finishing off our unit on changes by heat. We welcome any other discussions on change.

You may have noticed we have had some difficulty in accessing Reading Eggs. Many parents also reported this problem. Now everything is working again, so we are encouraging work on Reading Eggs at least three times a week at home if possible. We plan on having certificates handed out at a special

“Grade One time” each month. We had a good look at the site on the data projector last week and there are many sections and activities that the students needed to revisit.

Please keep sending in the boxes etc. for construction/collage for our Under Eight’s Day in June.

Have you sent back your permission form for Under Eight’s Day?

Year 2 News

We have had a busy week! There is much happening in Year 2. The children have been eager to check the sunflower seeds each morning and if there has been any change. The sunflower seeds have led to much healthy discussion each morning and when the children fill in their seed calendar. It has been great to see the children excited and interacting in a positive way.

The children are also excited about the upcoming Character Parade on Thursday morning at 9am. Parents are most welcome to attend, if you can make it. Book Fair is open every day this week from 8:15 am to 4:00 pm in the library. The more books/products we sell means more money back into the school.

We wish our Year 2 competitors all the very best for the Catholic Schools' Cross Country next Wednesday, June 1st. These include, Tyla, Miller, Kingston, Griffin, Maeve, Sarah and Jake. Congratulations to those children for their commitment to exercise.

Enjoy our photos from Fun Friday! We wish you a very happy week!

Year 3 News

Please remember to make an appointment if needing to have a chat to your child’s classroom teacher. Preparation time before school is precious. If matters are not urgent consider an email or note to convey a message. If pick up plans change at the last minute call the office. Our school routine has now returned to normal with homework set for this week and regular weekly spelling. We have been revisiting your Learning Intentions, Success Criteria and Goal Setting to assist us to stay focused on all of the students' learning. The children are reminded that ‘effort makes a difference’. The Year 3 curriculum commences a new cycle as the Prep-2 curriculum works on acquiring basic literacy and numeracy skills, while Year 3 works on understanding and applying this new information. When we learn something new it is always daunting. We feel out of our depth and like we will never understand this new skill, however we persevere until the task becomes clearer and easier. Remember to encourage your child by telling them, “You don’t get it -YET.” In Year 3 Religion we are exploring the Sacraments of Initiation into the Catholic Church. These include Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. For parents who are considering enrolling your child into a Parish Sacramental program it is often helpful information to know that these sacraments have been taught at school. We have been learning about the Sacraments of Initiation, followed by Scripture that mentioned the “Messiah”, Jesus as God’s son, the promised one. We will also be reviewing text types from scripture to compare and contrast differences between the Acts, parables, and letters from the New Testament.

We're continuing to work on our newspaper writing skills. Here's an example of using a headline, lead, body and tail structure for reporting a news item. WALK THE ENVIRONMENT... On Friday morning St Brigid's students walked to school to help the environment. On the way to school the majority of students and parents did something to help everybody be fit, healthy and happy. They helped the environment because there was less pollution and less cars in the car park. The pollution that's happening, not just in the St Brigid's community but all over the world, is getting too serious. The event was both important to the environment and community. 4C Reporters: Hannah, Ariya and Elle

Year 5 News

Grade Five is working hard on several different tasks at the moment. We are using Little Bird Tales to make a story of Pentecost. We’ve also been working on a maths investigations, using data about movie times to make different graphs, on our tablets and on paper. We are all looking forward to the Book Character Parade happening on Thursday. Keep thinking about creative ways of dressing up as your favourite character. Perhaps our reader’s cup books could provide some inspiration? We took part in a Japanese drumming workshop on Tuesday. Thank you to Sensei and Mrs Sandstrom for organising this for us.

Year 6 News

As part of our Religion unit we have been looking at the issue of social justice and how we as Catholics are expected to help those in need in any way we can. It is fitting, therefore, that we are putting our words into action as the students run the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal at our school. Each student is required to prepare an item that promotes the appeal to the rest of the school community. Kristy-Lee and Jack ‘kicked-off’ with an outstanding mini drama piece on last week’s morning assembly. Kobe has followed on with a visually effective poster which he chose to hang up near the tuckshop for maximum exposure. Great job students!

Collection day will be every Thursday so please look in your cupboards for any clean, warm clothing blankets in good condition as well as non-perishable food items.

Vinnies Winter Food and Clothing Appeal

This year the year sixes of St Brigid’s are running a mini Vinnie’s to collect warm clothes, non-perishable food, water and blankets to help St Vincent de Paul. Claire was one of the many people that St Vincent de Paul has helped. Claire was pregnant with nowhere to go. People are homeless because they might have been in an abusive relationship, been sick and lost their job or couldn’t pay the bills in time and got kicked out of their home’s. Claire bravely reached out to St Vincent’s who found her and her daughter a home with food and furniture to enjoy. 45,813 women are facing homelessness in Australia. 59 percent of these are actually women. By donating to mini Vinnie’s you can help lots of people and their children.

Sometimes, items belonging to other children are picked up from the playground and placed in their bags by mistake without the children

checking first if it belongs to them. Student Absences
