Peoples goodbyes can show or mask a multitude of emotions. A trite comment can be loaded with many hidden meanings. A joke can hide an aching heart. These human foibles can be seen in their rawest form in the parting words between the departing emigrant and the family and friends they leave behind. The early days of decision making for this exhibition proved to be challenging. So many ideas floating about, everybody wanting to put their own creative mark on the project. This resulted in us getting nowhere fast.I suggested to a few people that we take the word exhibition out of the equation and instead look upon it as a public artwork. Working together in groups will both encourage and create a sense of fluidity within the work plus allow people to work to their strengths resulting in a stronger body of work. Lars idea Parting Words appealed to us. This presentation is a collaborative work. Since our return from the Christmas break we appear to be experiencing a type of epiphany. We have worked closely this past week. Each member of the group has contributed to this presentation. We choose the images together. Marie, Lar and myself compiled the parting words for the panel. Indrija and Muireann manipulated the images in Photoshop and did the mock ups for Fettitts lane. I approached the Cornmarket . They have excellent facilities for sign printing. They have agreed to come on board for this exhibition and will do the lettering for the panels for which they will receive accreditation. They are also supplying the vinyl for the lettering.Details for this presentation were discussed as a group. We gave the information to Marie who put the PowerPoint together.

3Selection of artworks:

This concept uses the mundane imagery of transport by land, air or sea. We added texts modified some existing graphics. We hope to convey the emotions hidden in the phrases and platitudes exchanged between people at the time of leaving. The images and texts are simple and clear using three colours black, white and red. The black and white are the colours used in the original signs but we exchanged red for yellow as red suggests emotions, love etc. Red is also used to deliberately to emphasise certain words and it is planned to create a message or sentence if possible from the red words when they are lined up on the wall.

And this view shows the same wall as if you have continued from the Main Street towards Anne st. So they are strong visuals and transform these forgotten walls. I will now hand you over to Lar who will outline the materials we propose to use and the technical details and budget for this part of the Departure project. 17Mock ups of wall placement

22Parting Wordsand thank you for your time and consideration

'Whilst this project highlights the plight of Irish people in this economic climate, we hope it offers promise and encouragement to all those who leave and the loved ones they leave behind. Whilst theres no place like home, the world is getting smaller. I leave you with our parting words to you, an old dictum; You are only a phone call away.
